Protecting Our Children's Mental Health by Committee on Committee on Indian Affairs United States Senate Pdf

It is often said that children are our most precious resource. Nowhere is this more visible than in tribal communities, yet some disturbing realities persist. Studies show that Native children suffer from high rates of trauma, abuse and exposure to violence. A 2008 report by the Indian Country Child Trauma Center calculated that Native youth are two-and-a-half times more likely to experience trauma when compared to their non-Native peers. The reasons are multi-factorial, related to recurrent abuse, accompanied with high incidences of alcohol and drug abuse, suicide, and violence. The death of family members can also be a significant cause of childhood trauma. Native youth also grow up in poverty at levels much higher than their non-Native counterparts.

Focusing on children who are subject to welfare intervention, Protecting Children addresses the challenges and issues of the child welfare system and provides foundational knowledge on the theoretical and practical aspects of the field. This edited collection begins with a review of key concepts, including child development, attachment, and resilience theories; social policies; family law; and ethics. This foundational volume is an important resource for courses in social work and child welfare. Health and social care professionals are constantly exhorted to work collaboratively. This book reports on research which examines interprofessional work with families in which mothers have a mental health problem and where there are also concerns about child protection. Breakdowns in interprofessional collaboration, issues of risk and relevant resources are all addressed. Mothers' views and experiences are contrasted with professional perspectives. Child protection and mental health services: · reports on a survey of 500 practitioners working in health, social services and the voluntary sector; · presents data from in-depth interviews with mothers with severe mental health problems; · identifies weaknesses in interprofessional coordination in this area of work; · suggests a new model for work with families where mental health problems and child protection concerns co-exist. All those involved in child protection or mental health work with families will find this book a stimulating read. This book will be of interest to practitioners, managers and policy makers as well as students studying health and social care.

Protecting the Children by Raymond P. Lorion Pdf

Learn how to prevent emotional and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents. Protecting the Children provides readers with clear and informative descriptions of ten demonstrably effective strategies for promoting positive mental health among children. For planners and providers of children's mental health services, it offers an array of alternatives for responding to the needs of high-risk children prior to the onset of problems. The carefully designed and meticulously researched programs--which can be adopted in communities around the nation--represent examples of the benefits to be achieved by attacking factors that place individuals at risk for disorders rather than the disorders themselves. The programs described include: Innovative educational practices to assist the intellectual development of children from poor and undereducated families Pregnancy and infancy nurse home visitations for families at social risk because of the mother's young age, single-parent status, or poverty--in order to improve prenatal health habits, care of the child, and the psychosocial context of the family A culture-sensitive program designed to help low-income Mexican-American families enhance their children's school performance and reduce the incidence of their behavior problems Strategies developed to enhance self-esteem, provide emotional support, and assist children in understanding their parents'divorce A broad-based substance abuse prevention program that emphasizes self-improvement and the development of personal and social skills The volume also provides evidence in support of those who argue that the nation's policymakers must appreciate the value of preventive interventions in serving the needs of children and adolescents. Prevention oriented health care professionals and service providers, policymakers involved in planning services for low income and high risk populations, community psychologists, and clinical-child psychologists who focus on the needs of high-risk populations will find this provocative book is a necessary addition to their professional libraries.

An International Perspective on Disasters and Children's Mental Health by Christina W. Hoven,Lawrence V. Amsel,Sam Tyano Pdf

This book provides a broad international perspective on the psychological trauma faced by children and adolescents exposed to major disasters, and on the local public health response to their needs. An outstanding quality of the book is that it draws upon the experience of local researchers, clinicians, and public mental health practitioners who dedicated themselves to these children in the wake of overwhelming events. The chapters address exemplary responses to a wide variety of trauma types, including severe weather, war, industrial catastrophes, earthquakes, and terrorism. Because disasters do not recognize geographic, economic, or political boundaries, the chapters have been selected to reflect the diverse global community’s attempt to respond to vulnerable children in the most challenging times. The book, thus, examines a diverse range of healthcare systems, cultural settings, mental health infrastructure, government policies, and the economic factors that have played an important role in responses to traumatic events. The ultimate goal of this book is to stimulate future international collaborations and interventions that will promote children’s mental health in the face of disaster.

Moving Toward Positive Systems of Child and Family Welfare by Gerald R Adams,Gary Cameron,Nick Coady Pdf

Faced with rapidly changing social and economic conditions, service professionals, policy developers, and researchers have raised significant concerns about the Canadian child welfare system. This book draws inspiration from experiences with three broad, international child welfare paradigms—child protection, family service, and community healing/caring (First Nations)—to look at how specific practices in other countries, as well as alternative experiments in Canada, might foster positive innovations in the Canadian child welfare approach. Foundational values and purposes, systems design and policy, and organization and management are discussed, as are front-line service delivery, service provider work environments, and the realities of daily living for families. Informed by recent research, the contributors provide clear directions for policy, administration, and service-delivery reforms. Informing policy debates addressing child maltreatment and family welfare, this book will serve as a vital resource for managers, service providers, professionals, and students in the fields of social work, child and youth care, family studies, psychology, and special education.

Fostering Healthy Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Development in Children and Youth by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Board on Children, Youth, and Families,Committee on Fostering Healthy Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Development Among Children and Youth Pdf

Healthy mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) development is a critical foundation for a productive adulthood. Much is known about strategies to support families and communities in strengthening the MEB development of children and youth, by promoting healthy development and also by preventing and mitigating disorder, so that young people reach adulthood ready to thrive and contribute to society. Over the last decade, a growing body of research has significantly strengthened understanding of healthy MEB development and the factors that influence it, as well as how it can be fostered. Yet, the United States has not taken full advantage of this growing knowledge base. Ten years later, the nation still is not effectively mitigating risks for poor MEB health outcomes; these risks remain prevalent, and available data show no significant reductions in their prevalence. Fostering Healthy Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Development in Children and Youth: A National Agenda examines the gap between current research and achievable national goals for the next ten years. This report identifies the complexities of childhood influences and highlights the need for a tailored approach when implementing new policies and practices. This report provides a framework for a cohesive, multidisciplinary national approach to improving MEB health.

Mental Health and Development by Natalie Drew,Michelle Funk,World Health Organization Pdf

"This report presents compelling evidence that people with mental health conditions meet major criteria for vulnerability. The report also describes how vulnerability can lead to poor mental health, and how mental health conditions are widespread yet largely unaddressed among groups identified as vulnerable. It argues that mental health should be included in sectoral and broader development strategies and plans, and that development stakeholders have important roles to play in ensuring that people with mental health conditions are recognized as a vulnerable group and are not excluded from development opportunities. The recommended actions in this report provide a starting point to achieve these aims."--Page xxiv.
