Public Policies on Sustainable Logistics and the Impact on Third-Party Logistics Provider by Martin Töbelmann Pdf

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: Distinction / 78%, University of Westminster, course: Logistics and Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: The logistics sector is growing rapidly. Freight transport has increased by 31 per cent between 1995 and 2005. As the volume of world trade rises, the European Commission predicts a further 50 per cent increase by 2020. But the logistics sector faces a number of challenges. Besides globalisation, means supply chains have become longer and more complex, increasing traffic congestion and soaring fuel prices, the logistics industry faces public and state environmental concerns, such as air and water pollution, energy con- sumption or waste disposal. Studies show that transportation and logistics can account for up to 75 per cent of a business’s carbon footprint. National governments and the European Union have therefore introduced a number of measures to ‘green’ transport and in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Policy-makers and their policies and regulations on sustainable logistics are assumed to play a critical role in the future development of sustainable logistics. The key research questions are Q1: How do 3PL companies see their current corporate activity in terms of sustainable logistics dependent on governmental policies and regulations? Q2: To what extent do 3PL firms think that governmental policies and regulations are necessary in order to shift the industry towards more sustainability? Q3: How do 3PLs assess the role of subcontractors on this topic and how will the logistics market be influenced by policies on sustainable logistics? The selection of the sampling is based on the exploratory sample which helps to generate deep insights into new ideas and people’s expertise. In total, five logistics experts were questioned through telephone and face-to-face semi-structured interviews. All experts work in different leading transport and logistics firms in executive positions.

Green Logistics by Prof Alan McKinnon,Dr Sharon Cullinane,Dr Anthony Whiteing,Professor Michael Browne Pdf

The main objective of logistics is to co-ordinate the movement of products through the supply chain in a way that meets customer requirements at minimum cost. In the past this cost has been defined in purely monetary terms. As concern for the environment rises, companies must take more account of the external costs of logistics associated mainly with climate change, air pollution, noise, vibration and accidents. Green Logistics analyses the environmental consequences of logistics and how to deal with them. Written by a leading team of logistics academics, the book examines ways of reducing these externalities and achieving a more sustainable balance between economic, environmental and social objectives.

Logistics Social Responsibility and Dynamic Capabilities: Conceptualization and Empirical Analysis by Tim Gruchmann Pdf

Logistics Social Responsibility (LSR) emerged as a concept to integrate sustainability throughout logistics-oriented processes in the supply chain. Hence, logistics services are linked to sustainability requirements. To meet these requirements, logistics service providers can respond to their responsibility by reducing the ecological and social impact in the supply chain. Moreover, it has been recognized that consumers also need to adapt to sustainability requirements: e.g., by supporting sustainable logistics strategies with their monetary “votes” or by changing their own consumption behavior. This “shared responsibility” requires mutual support and cooperation. Therefore, the core of this dissertation is that logistics service providers can further support sustainable development by facilitating more sustainable consumer choices. To enhance LSR activities, the link to the dynamic capabilities theory is investigated. Here, several capabilities have been identified through which managers can pool their knowledge and skills to generate new knowledge, solutions or resource configurations. Using these capabilities in a strategic manner, logistics service providers can purposefully change their business environment by forming new partnerships or changing existing relationships to gain from developing new business practices stressing sustainable purposes.

Government Impact on Sustainable and Responsible Supply Chain Management by Taghipour, Atour Pdf

A supply chain comprises different actors existing in different countries, including suppliers, producers, and customers. Clothes are supplied from Asia to all other regions; most coffee beans are supplied from South America; and cocoa is produced in Africa. Protecting the rights of people who produce goods in different countries is essential. In fact, according to this evolutionary law, companies need to identify, analyze, and prioritize the risks in their supply chains, and new policies must be established based on these results. New measures are taken to prevent or minimize violations of human rights and damage to the environment. Companies also need to set up grievance channels for people in the supply chains for regular reporting on supply chain practices. The German Supply Chain Act gives consumers the security that companies are managed based on fair production, and many similar legislations are likely to follow in other nations. Businesses around the world must prepare for these types of policies to impact their own supply chain management strategy before they are enforced if they wish to avoid revenue-impacting delays. Government Impact on Sustainable and Responsible Supply Chain Management is edited by Atour Taghipour, with about a decade of experience as a director in Automobile and High-Tech Industries, provides new and innovative ways to integrate social and environmental analysis into global value chains and adapt the law that regulates corporate responsibility for the observance of sustainability and human rights in the supply chain. This book is ideal for professionals and researchers working in governmental and private organizations in supply chain management, operations management, logistics, and operations research. Moreover, the book provides insights and support for executives in managing expertise, knowledge, information, and organizational development in different work communities and environments.

Logistics Clusters by Yossi Sheffi Pdf

How logistics clusters can create jobs while providing companies with competitive advantage. Why is Memphis home to hundreds of motor carrier terminals and distribution centers? Why does the tiny island-nation of Singapore handle a fifth of the world's maritime containers and half the world's annual supply of crude oil? Which jobs can replace lost manufacturing jobs in advanced economies? Some of the answers to these questions are rooted in the phenomenon of logistics clusters—geographically concentrated sets of logistics-related business activities. In this book, supply chain management expert Yossi Sheffi explains why Memphis, Singapore, Chicago, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, and scores of other locations have been successful in developing such clusters while others have not. Sheffi outlines the characteristic “positive feedback loop” of logistics clusters development and what differentiates them from other industrial clusters; how logistics clusters “add value” by generating other industrial activities; why firms should locate their distribution and value-added activities in logistics clusters; and the proper role of government support, in the form of investment, regulation, and trade policy. Sheffi also argues for the most important advantage offered by logistics clusters in today's recession-plagued economy: jobs, many of them open to low-skilled workers, that are concentrated locally and not “offshorable.” These logistics clusters offer what is rare in today's economy: authentic success stories. For this reason, numerous regional and central governments as well as scores of real estate developers are investing in the development of such clusters.
