Fifty Years in the Royal Navy (Classic Reprint) by Percy Scott Pdf

Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy How far these pages may prove of general interest I cannot tell, but they will at least show how opposed the Navy can be to necessary re forms, involving radical departures from traditional routine; the extent to which national interests may be injured owing to conservative forces within, and without, the public services; and what injury the country may suffer from politicians interfering in technical matters, which they necessarily do not understand. It is my hope that ultimate benefit may result from an honest attempt to shed light upon matters of Vital concern to the nation by means of my personal record. In that belief, these reminiscences have been published, and I would only wish to add that nothing has been set down in malice. My intention has been not to attack persons, but to expose rather the weaknesses and defects of our administrative machinery, in so far as I had experience of it. A Contribution to the Bibliography of the History of the United States Navy (Classic Reprint) by Charles T. Harbeck Pdf

Excerpt from A Contribution to the Bibliography of the History of the United States Navy Several years ago the compiler desired to add to his collection of books on the United States Navy, and to that end began the collection of titles of books not in his possession. At the time he had no intention of printing the list, merely desiring it for his personal use. As it assumed large proportions, and through many inquiries from people interested in the subject he learned that no bibliography of the His tory of the United States Navy had been published, he concluded to print a limited edition for the benefit of others. In the work of compilation he has been assisted by Miss Agnes C. Doyle of the Boston Public Library and Mr. Axel Mothe of the New York Public Library. Miss Doyle has also revised and edited the work. Admirals of the British Navy (Classic Reprint) by Francis Dodd Pdf

Excerpt from Admirals of the British Navy If the Army, on the contrary, is so much under the microscope, it is largely because it has few or no mysteries. We know the rules. Armies are made up of men like ourselves (only better). They advance as we do, by putting one foot before another, on the solid earth. Their movements are followable, even if we cannot always understand them daily bulletins are printed in the public Press. But the Navy keeps its secrets. Not only have we no notion where it is, but we should be little the Wiser as to its inner purposes if, scanning the illimitable and capricious waves, it should be our fortune to descry here and there a flotilla of its dark grey hulls. Even in harbour most men pointing out a cruiser to their children say That's a dreadnought -a state of confusion bred and fostered by the strange, dark, dangerous element in which the Navy has its being. So much for the causes of our odd willingness to forego one of the chief privileges of British birthright, which is to criticise, even to belittling, all that is ours. But there is justification, too, as the state of the sea to-day testifies. Thanks to the Navy there is at this moment hardly an enemy ship at large on the surface of the waters. The Kaiser's darling ironclads are idle as painted ships upon a painted ocean: not even an ocean, a canal. Our troops in millions have crossed to the Continent. We have enough to eat. Three Years of Naval Warfare (Classic Reprint) by R. H. Gibson Pdf

Excerpt from Three Years of Naval Warfare A history of the naval war since 1914 is of a very far reaching character, but I have endeavoured to localise the many campaigns into separate chapters, although a small amount of overlapping is unavoidable. The stupendous events of the last few years have followed one another in such rapid succession that few people realise the enormous task which our Navy was called upon to perform. From the terribly sudden collapse of the whole fabric of Germany's commerce the success of this work must be evident; and although in 1915 many of our ships were still engaged on foreign service, practically all naval matters centralised in home waters. The book is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the work of the Royal Navy around our shores, and the second part treating the British and Allied Fleets abroad. The veil over our Fleet remains as inscrutable as ever, and One is tempted to question the need for such absolute secrecy. The enemy is, Of course, greatly hindered in learn ing Of the dispositions and strength Of our squadrons and patrols, but the disappointment which the public feels is keen. It tends to make us overlook the wonderful patience of our sailors in their long and weary vigil for the hiding foe. Some'day let us hope that we shall be told the full story of the glorious deeds Of our men who had kept the seas in fair weather and foul, in winter and summer, by night and day, in the hope of encountering the enemy, in the enforcing of the blockade, in the protection of our vast overseas trade, in the supplying of our overseas forces, and in keeping our coasts immune from the inhuman and murderous invader. A Text Book of Naval Architecture by J. J. Welch Pdf

Excerpt from A Text Book of Naval Architecture: For the Use of Officers of the Royal Navy The vertical fluid pressures are the most important, as these give the buoyancy which supports the ship. Since any number of parallel forces may be supposed replaced by a single force - or resultant as it is termed - acting parallel to them and equal to their sum, it is only necessary to determine the magnitude of this resultant and the position of its line of action, in order to find the effect of all the vertical pressures upon the ship. Before. Proceeding to do this, one or two definitions will be given. The centre of gravity of a body may be defined as the point through which the weight of the body, when at rest, may be supposed to act, in a direction vertically downwards. When a ship is immersed in water, it occupies a certain Space which would otherwise be filled with water the quantity of fluid so dislodged is called the displacement, and may be measured by its volume in cubic feet or its weight in tons in the former case it is known as the volume, and in the latter the weight of displace ment. When displacement alone is spoken of, the weight of' displacement is usually meant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Your Navy as a Fighting Machine (Classic Reprint) by Fred T. Jane Pdf

Excerpt from Your Navy as a Fighting Machine What is a capital ship It is a vague sort of term that is frequently employed; nor is much further information usually to be gleaned than that it's a battleship. If there be one thing more than another Of which the general public is supremely ignorant that thing is a battleship. They may know its guns, they may know its displacement, speed and various other de tails - the sort Of thing to be found in every explanatory footnote in the daily Press. But it is safe to wager that not one man in a million in all the British Empire knows exactly what a battleship is for. All have a vague idea, because it so chances that people think in Dreadnoughts and they all know that Dreadnoughts are somewhere in the top line of battleships. The Royal Navy by Geoffrey Parratt Pdf

Excerpt from The Royal Navy: The Sure Shield of the Empire IT is meet that, from time to time, the British public should be reminded of the debt this country and our world-wide Empire owes to those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in great waters. Books connected with the sea have ever appealed to our Island people, and because the activities of the Royal Navy are ubiquitous and multifarious, books on this phase of sea life appeal, perhaps, more to the popular imagination than those which deal with the somewhat more prosaic, but no less important, work of the Mercantile Navy.
