Push Back Time by J Dori Callahan Pdf

"The Administrator requested I give you a presentation of the information we have in reference to JL 1628 and the reported UFO encounter over Alaska within the Alaska Air Traffic Control area. Would you gentlemen introduce yourself?" One man stood up and turned toward the six remaining men. "These are members of the Presidential scientific staff, along with members of the CIA and FBI. I am the team leader." He flashed his identification badge and sat down offering no names of the participants. The software team leader rose and slipped a video in a recorder, a picture of a radarscope filled the television screen which covered an entire wall of the large office. All eyes were transfixed on the JL 1628's aircraft symbol moving across the pale green background. Clearly depicted adjacent to the JL 1628 symbol was an intermitting unidentified target traveling in the vicinity of the B747. The unknown target moved beside, in front of and around JL 1628 for 32 minutes as the group listened to the voice of the pilot, the FAA air traffic controller, and the military controller as the attempted to determine who, what and where the strange target came from and the intention of the invader. The seven men requested to watch the tape two more times before starting their questioning. The oldest of the seven stood up and begin the questioning. He stated that he was from the President's scientific staff and needed a few details. "What was the speed of the antenna?" The lead software engineer responded, "9 seconds." "What was the frequency of the radar?" "126.35 he responded. "What was the beam width?" "3.5 degrees." "What was the algorithm of the height finding radar?" One of the other software engineers responded with the algorithm as if he answered the same question everyday. The leader of the seven stood up, pointing to the many boxes filled with printouts and tapes from the incident. "We are confiscating all this data." He turned in the direction of the large screen, "this event never happened, we were never here. Your are not to utter one word of this entire event to anyone. You are sworn to secrecy. If fact, you will forget any involvement with JL 1628 including us, this room, and every scrap of paper and person connected. Understand?"

The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time by William Safire Pdf

For the past twenty-five years Americans have relied on Pulitzer Prize-winning wordsmith William Safire for their weekly dose of linguistic illumination in The New York Times Magazine's column "On Language" -- one of the most popular features of the magazine and a Sunday-morning staple for innumerable fans. He is the most widely read writer on the English language today. Safire is the guru of contemporary vocabulary, speech, language, usage and writing. Dedicated and disputatious readers itch to pick up each column and respond to the week's linguistic wisdom with a gotcha letter to the Times. The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time marks the publication of Safire's sixteenth book on language. This collection is a classic to be read, re-read, enjoyed and fought over. Fans, critics and fellow linguists wait with bated (from the French abattre "to beat down") breath for each new anthology -- and, like its predecessors, this one is bound to satisfy and delight. Safire finds fodder for his columns in politics and current events, as well as in science, technology, entertainment and daily life. The self-proclaimed card-carrying language maven and pop grammarian is not above tackling his own linguistic blunders as he detects language trends and tracks words, phrases and clichés to their source. Scholarly, entertaining and thoughtful, Safire's critical observations about language and slanguage are at once provocative and enlightening. Safire is America's go-to guy when it comes to language, and he has included sharp and passionately opinionated letters from readers across the English-speaking world who have been unable to resist picking up a pen to put the maven himself in his place or to offer alternate interpretations, additional examples, amusing anecdotes or just props. The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time is a fascinating, learned and piquant look at the oddities and foibles that find their way into the English language. Exposing linguistic hooey and rigamarole and filled with Safire's trademark wisdom, this book has a place on the desk or bedside table of all who share his profound love of the English language -- as well as his penchant for asking "What does that mean?" Or, "Wassat?" This new collection is sure to delight readers, writers and word lovers everywhere and spark the interest of anyone who has ever wondered, "Where did the phrase 'brazen hussy' come from?"

The Push Back by Lawrence Clayton Pdf

As our country goes through trying times, the author put together the best of his op-ed columns, published in his local newspaper, The Tuscaloosa News, which deals with the issues facing our nation today. Clayton ranges all the way from the issues very close to home and family, such as what is being taught in our schools, colleges, and universities, to issues straddling the incredibly complex and often rancorous events in public life, from the presidency of the nation all the way down to local school boards. He not only identifies and analyzes issues we are all, more or less, familiar with, like Project 1619, critical race theory, the programs of diversity, equity, and inclusion in virtually all colleges and universities across the country, but the reader will also find suggestions and remedies for a world that has become almost dysfunctional or dystopic in today's language. These suggestions range all the way from establishing new programs of study that emphasize our traditional values, like liberty, equality, the right to vote, personal responsibility, and furthermore, call for a restoration of the home and religion to fashionably modern concerns with sexism, racism, and other expressions leaving young people at loose ends on who they are and what is it that made the nation so prosperous and generous until this day. As a historian, he does not ignore what went wrong over the years in the making of our people but deals with them honestly and explores many answers suggested by a close reading of both natural law and Christian Scripture.

Push Back the Dark by Elizabeth M. Altmaier Pdf

Adults in your church, small group, or other Christian organization are silently suffering the tragic consequences of having been sexually abused as children or youth. Why aren't they coming forward for help? Their reluctance may be related to wounds given by the faithful--religious people they trusted, who said things like "well, it wasn't rape" or "it's been thirty years--why is this such a big deal?" Such responses from people with religious authority deepen victims' need to shrink into anxiety, depression, and self-degradation. This book offers you the tools needed to undertake caring ministry to adults suffering in the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse. Once you understand the scientific research on such topics as trauma memory, consequences of abuse, and forgiveness, you will appreciate how caring collaboration can create hope and healing. In these pages every reader will find helpful content that will take you from feeling out of your depth to knowing you are empowered to be an effective companion in God's transforming work in the lives of survivors of abuse.

Education and the Mobility Turn by Kalervo N Gulson,Colin Symes Pdf

The ‘mobile turn’ in human geography, sociology and cultural studies has resulted in a hitherto unparalleled focus on the critical role that mobility plays in conserving and regenerating society and culture. In this instance, ‘mobility’ refers not just to the physical movement of goods and peoples, ideas and symbols; it can also be analytically applied to the technologies used to facilitate their movement. One such technology is education, which has yet to fall the under the purview of the mobility lens – something that this collection endeavours to redress. Its contributing authors, drawn from Canada, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, explore salient issues relating to education and mobility. These include studies of the career implications for academics of moving across borders; the impact of university study on prison populations; policy mobility and the charter school movement; affect theory and policy development in Canada; educational advertising on Sydney trains and stations; and the employment mobile approaches to track policy development and implementation. One notable feature of the mobility turn is the willingness of its adoptees to explore innovative research methods. Variously demonstrating the efficacy and cogency of autoethnography, affect theory, textual ethnography and human geography for a mobility-empowered education analytics, this collection is no exception. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies in Education.

Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment by W. Richard Stevens,Stephen A. Rago Pdf

For more than twenty years, serious C programmers have relied on one book for practical, in-depth knowledge of the programming interfaces that drive the UNIX and Linux kernels: W. Richard Stevens’ Advanced Programming in the UNIX® Environment. Now, once again, Rich’s colleague Steve Rago has thoroughly updated this classic work. The new third edition supports today’s leading platforms, reflects new technical advances and best practices, and aligns with Version 4 of the Single UNIX Specification. Steve carefully retains the spirit and approach that have made this book so valuable. Building on Rich’s pioneering work, he begins with files, directories, and processes, carefully laying the groundwork for more advanced techniques, such as signal handling and terminal I/O. He also thoroughly covers threads and multithreaded programming, and socket-based IPC. This edition covers more than seventy new interfaces, including POSIX asynchronous I/O, spin locks, barriers, and POSIX semaphores. Most obsolete interfaces have been removed, except for a few that are ubiquitous. Nearly all examples have been tested on four modern platforms: Solaris 10, Mac OS X version 10.6.8 (Darwin 10.8.0), FreeBSD 8.0, and Ubuntu version 12.04 (based on Linux 3.2). As in previous editions, you’ll learn through examples, including more than ten thousand lines of downloadable, ISO C source code. More than four hundred system calls and functions are demonstrated with concise, complete programs that clearly illustrate their usage, arguments, and return values. To tie together what you’ve learned, the book presents several chapter-length case studies, each reflecting contemporary environments. Advanced Programming in the UNIX® Environment has helped generations of programmers write code with exceptional power, performance, and reliability. Now updated for today’s systems, this third edition will be even more valuable.

Migrating Large-Scale Services to the Cloud by Eric Passmore Pdf

This book reveals the technical challenges and successful implementation details of migrating MSN, Microsoft’s consumer content portal--a business with 450 million worldwide users--into the Cloud. Following a technique long used in aviation, medicine, and other fields, MSN’s Chief Technical Officer, Eric Passmore, describes the set of release, deployment, monitoring, and mitigation checklists used to build cloud services supporting hundreds of millions of users on Azure, Microsoft’s Public Cloud. An undertaking of this scale--involving services supported by a large team of engineers--involves unique challenges and risks. This book demonstrates through personal experience how to cut through the theory and provides checklists as a surprisingly simple antidote to the competing methodologies. This book works at two levels. At a fundamental level, businesses need to be successful in the cloud if they want to seize new opportunities and transform their business to compete successfully. This book provides a framework for success by identifying the "hidden" work as part of moving to the cloud. At a more practical, level there is an incredible hunger for simple to follow, "how-to" information on Cloud migration. This book is a reference guide to reduce risk and achieve success without requiring the busy reader to wade through theory. It contains simple to follow, "how-to" information on cloud migration. It is a reference guide to achieving success, and any team can modify these tasks to fit the needs of their own organization.
