This report is based on a field excursion guide prepared for the CANQUA 1991 conference. It provides general field excursion information including the organization of the field excursion and safety considerations; gives an introduction to the area involved, including general background, physiography and bedrock geology, vegetation, climate, soils, and prehistory; then provides detailed information on the various stops on each of the three days of the excursion.

Quaternary Geology and Dispersal Patterns of the McAdam (NTS 21 G/11) Map Area, York County, New Brunswick by Andrew John Stumpf,New Brunswick. Minerals & Energy Division Pdf

This study was undertaken in the McAdam map area of southwestern New Brunswick as part of the larger Southern Pokiok Batholith Quaternary Geology and Till Geochemistry Project. The study objectives were to examine the dynamics of glacial advance and retreat in the McAdam area, including a study of ice flow directions; to study the specific dispersal patterns of the lithological and geochemical components of ablation and basal tills; and to examine the stratigraphy of the surficial units in the area. As part of the study, 331 samples of glacial sediments were collected on a two-kilometre grid over the map area. Analyses were performed to study the sample compositions and the results were assessed with areal dispersal plots and Spearman correlations. The till components were analysed to compare dispersal of clast and matrix components and to evaluate whether component dispersal adequately reflected bedrock sources.

Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology by J. Ehlers,P.L. Gibbard Pdf

This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Pleistocene Stratigraphy and Till Geochemistry of the Miramichi Zone, New Brunswick by Michel Lamothe,Geological Survey of Canada Pdf

Mineral exploration in large parts of Canada is difficult because the bedrock is hidden beneath thick layers of glacially derived sediments. One technique to overcome this, called drift prospecting, identifies high concentrations of economically significant minerals or elements in the glacial sediments and helps to identify their bedrock sources. This project was designed to interpret Quaternary geology to assist in mineral development. This report shows how the geochemistry and lithology of the glacial sediments vary across the region and how the stratigraphy and provenance of those sediments can be interpreted so that geochemical anomalies or mineralized boulders may be traced back to their bedrock sources.

Quaternary Geology of Southwest New Brunswick with Particular Reference to Fredericton Area (21G) by N. R. Gadd Pdf

In 1967 and 1968 the surficial deposits of the St. George (21 G/2) and St. Stephen (21 G/3) map-areas were mapped and the data deposited on open file at the Geological Survey of Canada. This, and previous work by Lee (1957, 1962) in the Frederickton (21 G/15) and Canterbury (21 G/14) map-areas, formed the basis for the present study. This report contains a geological map showing the distribution of unconsolidated glacial and nonglacial deposits at a scale of 1:250,000 and the interpretation of the glacial and post-glacial history of the Frederickton area.

This report contains a detailed description of the unconsolidated sedimentary materials and landforms in the Smithers-Terrace-Prince Rupert region, and an account of the geological processes that have been active in shaping this area during late Quaternary time. The information in this report is vital to an understanding of the character and distribution of agriculatural soils, the nature of foundation conditions, the location and extent of construction aggregate and aquifers, and the nature of natural hazards in the region.

Quaternary Geology of St. Anthony - Blanc-Sablon Area, Newfoundland and Quebec by D. R. Grant,Geological Survey of Canada Pdf

The study was prompted by a need for data on terrain conditions, soil materials, and glacial transport, which was required for mineral exploration, for the planning of a hydroelectric transmission corridor, for bedrock mapping, for forest inventory, and for land capability studies. A secondary reason for beginning a program of surficial mapping in this part of Newfoundland was the paucity of Quaternary geological information in a key area about which early reports debated the extent of glaciation, and where airphoto reconnaissance revealed significant new glacial and marine formations.
