Quaternary Geology of Central Melville Island, Northwest Territories by D. A. Hodgson,J. S. Vincent,John Gladstone Fyles Pdf

This report completes a project designed to study the Quaternarygeology of central Melville Island including Dundas Peninsula. It contains descriptions of surficial materials together with anoutline of the Quaternary history with particular emphasis onlate Quaternary glacial and marine events. Dundas Peninsula isof particular interest since continental ice sheets reached theirmaximum limits in this area on several occasions. A particularlyimportant reason for examining south-central Melville Island isthe projected routing (at the time of writing) of one or morenatural gas transportation systems through it. Nonetheless, thisstudy is not designed to provide geotechnical information for anyone project, but rather to provide information relevant toengineering, land management, or environmental impact studies, aswell as regional Quaternary studies.

GLACIAL LANDSYSTEMS by David Evans Pdf

This book is a comprehensive overview of the ever-captivating field of glaciation from the perspective of glacial landsystems. This approach models the many processes, forms and interactions that can be found in glaciated landscapes throughout the world. Landsystems models allow the glacial geologist and geomorphologist to evaluate these landscapes in relation to the dynamics of glaciation and to climate and geology. Glacial Landsystems brings together the expertise of an international range of specialists to provide an up-to-date summary of landsystems relevant to both modern and ancient glacier systems and also in the reconstruction and interpretation of former glacial environments. The models are applicable at all scales from ice sheets to small valley glaciers. This book is an essential reference for anyone embarking upon research or engineering surveys in glaciated basins and provides a wide-ranging handbook of glacial landsystem types for students of glaciation.

Quaternary Geology of Boothia Peninsula and Northern District of Keewatin, Central Canadian Arctic by Arthur S. Dyke Pdf

"This report describes the surficial geology of 64,000 km2 of Canada's most northern mainland and complements of a similar report on Somerset Island which lies immediately north of Boothia Peninsula being separated from it by the very narrow waters of Bellot Strait. The report discusses the potential use of geological information to future land use projects and to mineral exploration and presents new interpretations regarding the structure and dynamics of the northern part of the last ice sheet to cover Canada." --

Cryospheric Systems by Geological Society of London Pdf

The introduction of the term periglacial by Lozinski in 1909 to describe the cold-climate conditions in the zone adjacent to, but beyond, the Pleistocene glaciers encouraged the separate development of geocryological and glaciological research. Geological and geomorphological processes at the interface between glaciers and permafrost have, as a result, been given less attention than they warrant, and the influence of one on the other has in many respects been neglected. This book includes a collection of papers that emphasize glacier-permafrost interactions. Papers consider permafrost and its influence on glacitectonic processes, glacial meltwater systems and ground-ice development in proglacial and ice-marginal environments. In addition, recent research findings are reported on paraglacial processes, permafrost evolution, rock glaciers, the formation of ice-wedge casts and periglacial slope evolution. It is hoped that this book will stimulate interest in the interface between glacial and periglacial systems, and encourage further collaborative research involving glaciologists and glacial geologists on the one hand, and geocryologists and permafrost scientists on the other.

Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology by J. Ehlers,P.L. Gibbard Pdf

This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Quaternary Geology of the Tuktoyaktuk Coastlands, Northwest Territories by V. N. Rampton Pdf

The Quaternary geology of the Tuktoyaktuk Coastlands was initially investigated in the 1960s because of active exploration for oil and gas. Continuing exploration in the Beaufort Sea region resulted in the need for support and transportation facilities throughout the Tuktoyaktuk coastlands and emphasized the importance of the surficial geology studies. This report synthesizes the observations made during the last 2 decades. It establishes the sequence and age of Quaternary deposits and landforms; the distribution of permafrost and ground ice relative to the various Quaternary landforms and stratigraphic sequences; and the effect of modern, especially periglacial, process upon the landscape.
