High Levels of Natural Radiation and Radon Areas by Tsutomu Sugahara Pdf

Ever more attention has been focused on naturally occurring radiation, thanks to the shift of public concern and scientific interest from high to low-level radiation in recent years. There are many places in the world that are known to have high levels of terrestrial background gamma radiation as well as highly concentrated radon and their decay products in the air, soil and drinking water. Various scientific investigations have been conducted in those areas to collect information on radiation doses and their health effects, contributing greatly to advancing our knowledge. In recent years, technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM) has also attracted attention. The 6th International Conference on High Levels of Natural Radiation and Radon Areas was held in Osaka, Japan from September 6-10, 2004, for the purpose of exchanging information and experience regarding investigations in this field. These proceedings contain more than 100 papers presented at the meeting, which aimed to discuss the following major topics: 1) risk assessment, radiation protection, environmental transfer pathways and ecological impacts related to natural radiation and TENORM; 2) dosimetry of natural-radiation, including radon, thoron, and cosmic rays, and its technological aspects, e.g., individual dosimetry and retrospective measurements; and 3) in vitro and in vivo biological studies of low-level radiation, including molecular mechanisms. The Environmental Behaviour of Polonium by International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

Polonium-210 is an alpha emitting radionuclide with no radioactive progeny and produces only very-low-intensity gamma rays at very low abundance. This means doses largely arise from internal exposure. In addition to the relatively high ingestion does coefficient of 210Po, radionuclide transfer in the environment results in high activity concentrations in certain foods. This publication focuses on radionuclide transfers in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments, and provides information on key transfer processes, concepts and models--back cover.

The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a nonprofit, public foundation, was established in 1978 to advance the sciences of nutrition, toxicology, and food safety. ILSI promotes the resolution of health and safety issues in these areas by sponsoring research, conferences, publications, and educational programs. Through ILSI's programs, scientists from government, academia, and industry unite their efforts to resolve issues of critical importance to the public. As part of its commitment to understanding and resolving health and safety issues, ILSI is pleased to sponsor this series of monographs that consolidates new scientific knowledge, defines research needs, and provides a background for the effective application of scientific advances in toxicology and food safety. Radon and Its Decay Products in Indoor Air by William W. Nazaroff,Anthony V. Nero Pdf

In recent years, the perception of indoor radon as a relatively minor health issue has been radically altered: observations in Sweden, Canada, and the U.S. have revealed the high incidence of elevated radon levels in ordinary houses and the extreme hazard of inhaling radon decay products. These findings have lead to a wide range of activities and intensive research aimed at limiting human exposure to radon. This is one of the few books to provide a comprehensive, insightful analysis of the radon problem. Papers reflecting the most current research critically review all major aspects of this issue, each providing sufficient detail to be accessible to those who are technically trained but lack prior direct experience. Coverage includes the generation and migration of radon in source material, the physical and chemical behavior of radon, current evidence on the health effects and risk of exposure, and the strategic and tactical aspects of controlling exposures.
