Ramza by Out el Kouloub Pdf

Out el Kouloub's Ramza is the story of one woman's rebellion against her life in the harem of a wealthy Egyptian family at the turn of the century. Although she flourishes in this world, secure in the safety it provides, she comes to despise its constraints. In describing her growing awareness of the life of women in her elite milieu, Ramza paints an intimate portrait of harem life, including the methods employed by the wives and concubines to ensure the power they seek for themselves and their children. Ramza is drawn to books, music, and eventually to the men's quarter. She dares to express her physical, social, and sexual repression. The novel is a heartfelt dramatization of a piece of Egyptian feminine and feminist history set at a time when Egyptian women were struggling to come forward. It was originally published by Gallimard Press in France in 1958.

Memory, Voice, and Identity by Feroza Jussawalla,Doaa Omran Pdf

Muslim women have been stereotyped by Western academia as oppressed and voiceless. This volume problematizes this Western academic representation. Muslim Women Writers from the Middle East from Out al-Kouloub al-Dimerdashiyyah (1899–1968) and Latifa al-Zayat (1923–1996) from Egypt, to current diasporic writers such as Tamara Chalabi from Iraq, Mohja Kahf from Syria, and even trendy writers such as Alexandra Chreiteh, challenge the received notion of Middle Eastern women as subjugated and secluded. The younger largely Muslim women scholars collected in this book present cutting edge theoretical perspectives on these Muslim women writers. This book includes essays from the conflict-ridden countries such as Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, and the resultant diaspora. The strengths of Muslim women writers are captured by the scholars included herein. The approach is feminist, post-colonial, and disruptive of Western stereotypical academic tropes.

Visionaries of Silence by Earle H. Waugh Pdf

Founded in the sixteenth century, the Demirdashiya Sufi order in Cairo has played an influential role in Egypt’s public life, and through a line of family sheikhs has channeled the impulses of its Sufi origins into different types of reform. Practicing a visionary form of piety, the Demirdashiya—once legendary for its wealth and secrecy—continues to influence a small but important segment of contemporary Cairo’s inhabitants. In this fascinating study, scholar Earle Waugh highlights the Demirdashiya’s sophisticated and complex relationship with both politics and Islamic culture. As part of his research, Waugh attended the order’s liturgies—the dhikrs (remembrance) and khalwa (retreat)—normally closed to outsiders. During an annual khalwa, the adept silently meditates for three days in his own cell. More than giving up human discourse, the mandated silence is a reordering of sensitivities to the divine, and a path to insight into the many ways that God conveys Himself to humans. Examining the role of the Demirdashiya in Egypt’s history as well as its visionary piety, Visionaries of Silence explores the dialectic between reform and vision in a stable Sufi order. It also probes how these competing ideals were incorporated into the physical world of the zawiya, mosque, and living quarters, and the extension of its influence in Europe through its most famous daughter, Qut al-Qulub, noted visionary author and mother of the order’s current sheikh.

Our Deceased Loved Ones Communicating with Us by Ted Baxter Pdf

This book summarizes seventy of my honoring-the-dead books that I was directed to write by the dead. The dead would direct me in my dreams, usually within a week after they die, to write a book for their loved ones. They would tell me what to write, what photographs to use, and to whom to send the book. This is the reason why I had decided to publish this book. The dead dont forget you after they die. Dont forget them. People dont change after they die. Ive had many good experiences and a few very bad experiences with them. If I was able to communicate with the dead, you can to. Its a very interesting story how I had acquired this capability, which I discussed in this book. I was not born with that capability. I also discuss two of my prior lifetimes, which have also helped me communicate with the dead. These are all things that I suggest that you know about. It all helps, like it has helped me. Its all true, and it can be verified in the seventy books that I have written. This book summarizes what is in those seventy books. This book gives a number of examples that nothing happens by accident. You can be whatever you want to be. I did it, and you can do it too. In this lifetime, I meet my mother in my 1620 AD lifetime, who had given me my current capabilities.

The Variant Virus by G. A. Mohr, PhD Pdf

The book is the fi rst on the adventures of Briti sh secret agent Simon Sinclair who works mainly for Counter Terrorism Intelligence (Operati ons), or CT3, in conjuncti on with MI5, MI6 and the CIA. The book is a ‘future threat’ scenario, the threat in questi on being technologically feasible on grand scale as far back as the mid 1980s when an accident at Vektor, one of Russia’s then 50 Biological Warfare faciliti es, infected Usti nov with Marburg fi lovirus which evolved in the 15 days it took to liquefy all his organs into ‘Marburg Variant U’ which was then put atop SS16 rockets. In this gripping tale a recombinant or ‘dual’ virus is smuggled into England by CABAL, the Confederati on Against Briti sh-American Logisti cs, an internati onal group opposed to Briti sh and American power and infl uence that CABAL sees as hegemony. CABAL gives seven days noti ce of att acks on London. Aft er a CABAL att empt on his life Sinclair follows his att acker to Colombia where he learns the identi ti es of four CABAL ‘money men’ and captures one of them, the money trail left by these fi nanciers leading to the identi ty of CABAL’s operati onal leaders. Sinclair succeeds in thwarti ng four CABAL bomb att acks and stops helicopters heading to London with the virus, but not without fallout which threatens an epidemic. First symptoms of smallpox appear, and then those of a new and highly virulent strain of Marburg fi lovirus which causes haemorrhagic fever and liquefacti on of the organs. Sinclair fi nds a cure for the recombinant virus in Russia and spread throughout London, if not England or internati onally, is avoided. Many CABAL members have been captured or killed and for good measure Sinclair captures two of the three remaining top organizers sti ll at large. Refl ecti ng on a very hecti c three weeks during which England faced the greatest threat in its history, Sinclair realizes that there is a mole in CT3, leaving him a diffi cult future assignment but, at the same ti me, giving him an idea that might, given ti me, help shut down major terrorist organizati ons such as CABAL and Al Qa’ida for good.

Zanouba by Out el Kouloub Pdf

Out el Kouloub (1892-1968) is an author whose voice is just becoming heard in the United States. A member of the Muslim aristocracy in Egypt, she wrote unforgettable novels, mostly about Egyptian women of varying social classes and about family life in a traditional society. Like most members of the aristocracy, she wrote in French. In Zanouba, the reader is treated to vivid scenes of Egyptian middle-class life, starting in the 1900s. Abundant in traditional poems, songs, sayings, and rituals, the story of Zanouba enhances our understanding of certain deeply seated aspects of Egyptian life: the practices—including elaborate rituals—involved in guaranteeing the birth of a son; the jealousy and anger of the barren wife. Out el Kouloub's lush documentation bridges past and present while telling a tale that is both believable and touching.

You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be by Ted Baxter Pdf

This book describes how a person at any age can be whatever they want to be. I’ve done it under very difficult conditions, and you can do it too at any age. I want my readers to benefit from some of the types of experiences that I have had. The book discusses what really matters in life, nothing happens by accident, unexplainable experiences, communicating with the dead, my life experiences, prayer and meditation, ways to be happier and healthier, and the power of prayer. My life has gone from rag to riches, and it continues to get better and better. I started working every day of the year from seven years old until I graduated from high school. From those savings I was able to begin my college career. We had to live on my mother’s minimum wage job to support our entire family. I worked my way through college while receiving three advanced university degrees.

Juju Fission by Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi Pdf

Women, especially leaders, holding tête-à-têtes with men to address political impasses have been recognized as shrewd, double headed, or witchlike distinctions that link them with juju or extraordinary, survivalist powers. Juju Fission: Women's Alternative Fictions from the Sahara, the Kalahari, and the Oases In-Between is a theoretical and analytical book on African women writers that focuses on seven representative novels from different parts of Africa: Bessie Head's Maru (South Africa/Botswana); Nawal El Saadawi's Woman at Point Zero (Egypt); Ama Ata Aidoo's Our Sister Killjoy; or Reflections from a Black-Eyed Squint and Changes (Ghana); Assia Djebar's A Sister to Scheherazade (Algeria); Calixthe Beyala's The Sun Hath Looked Upon Me (Cameroon); and Yvonne Vera's Nehanda (Zimbabwe). In her analysis, Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi demonstrates how women are viewed and how they operate in critical times. Ogunyemi explains how the heritage is passed on, in spite of dire situations emanating from colonialism, postcolonialism, ethnicism, sexism, and grinding poverty. An important contribution to many fields, Juju Fission is excellent background material for courses on African studies, women's studies, African Diaspora studies, black studies, global studies, and general literature studies.

Debugging Game History by Henry Lowood,Raiford Guins Pdf

Essays discuss the terminology, etymology, and history of key terms, offering a foundation for critical historical studies of games. Even as the field of game studies has flourished, critical historical studies of games have lagged behind other areas of research. Histories have generally been fact-by-fact chronicles; fundamental terms of game design and development, technology, and play have rarely been examined in the context of their historical, etymological, and conceptual underpinnings. This volume attempts to “debug” the flawed historiography of video games. It offers original essays on key concepts in game studies, arranged as in a lexicon—from “Amusement Arcade” to “Embodiment” and “Game Art” to “Simulation” and “World Building.” Written by scholars and practitioners from a variety of disciplines, including game development, curatorship, media archaeology, cultural studies, and technology studies, the essays offer a series of distinctive critical “takes” on historical topics. The majority of essays look at game history from the outside in; some take deep dives into the histories of play and simulation to provide context for the development of electronic and digital games; others take on such technological components of games as code and audio. Not all essays are history or historical etymology—there is an analysis of game design, and a discussion of intellectual property—but they nonetheless raise questions for historians to consider. Taken together, the essays offer a foundation for the emerging study of game history. Contributors Marcelo Aranda, Brooke Belisle, Caetlin Benson-Allott, Stephanie Boluk, Jennifer deWinter, J. P.
