Rank and Privilege by Linda A. Rodriguez Pdf

Dr. Linda A. RodrÌguez has assembled a new collection of essays that finally provides the historical context necessary to understand the Latin American military. The articles included here examine a variety of time periods and nations, from the counterinsurgency army of New Spain, to the nineteenth-century War of the Pacific, to the modern relationship between the military and development. The contributors look at the ways in which Latin America's armed forces have changed over time, and how external threats as well as internal rivalries have shaped the military. Together, these essays trace the roots of the military's power and the growth of its political influence.

American Prisoners Of Japan: Did Rank Have Its Privilege? by Major Michael A. (Buffone) Zarate Pdf

This thesis examines the story of American POWs held by the Japanese in WWII to see if there were significant differences in treatment based on rank. It examines how the Japanese treated the prisoners according to international law and also distinctions made by the officers themselves simply because of higher rank. The thesis begins by discussing the historical framework for POW rank distinctions by looking at past wars and the development of rank distinctions in international rules. It then covers the American WWII POW experience in the Far East from Bataan and Corregidor to the war’s end. Special emphasis is placed on distinctions made in food, housing, pay, medical care, camp administration, work requirements, escape opportunities, transportation, leadership problems, and overall death rates. The study concludes that there were significant differences in treatment based on rank. These differences caused extremely high enlisted death rates during the first year of captivity. The officers fared worse as a group, however, because the Japanese held them in the Philippines until late 1944 because international rules prevented the Japanese from using officers in Japan’s labor camps. During shipment to Japan many officers died when the unmarked transport ships were sunk by advancing American forces.

Rank and Privilege by Linda Alexander Rodríguez Pdf

The power of the military in Latin America has become well known in recent decades, as coups have brought numerous military regimes into office since 1960. Yet too often it is assumed, for example, that the region's armed forces have had no legitimate defence functions, or that military professionalism is only a recent development.

Power, Discrimination, and Privilege in Individuals and Institutions by Sonya Faber,Monnica T. Williams,Matthew D. Skinta,Bia Labate Pdf

Individuals and systems are rife with prejudices, leading to discrimination and inequities. Examples of this include rejection of stigmatized groups (e.g., Black Americans, Indigenous people in Canada, Roma peoples in Europe), structural racism (e.g., inequitable distribution of resources for public schools), disenfranchisement of women employees (e.g., the “glass ceiling”), barriers to higher education (e.g., biased admissions requirements), heterosexism, economic oppression, and colonization. When we take a closer look, we find the core of the problem is imbalance in the distribution of power and its misuse.

Power and Privilege at an African University by Pierre L. van den Berghe Pdf

To the best of the author's knowledge, this study, conducted from July, 1968 to June, 1969, is the first comprehensive sociological survey of an African university. This study did not begin with a set of specific hypotheses to be tested, nor does the research include everything of conceivable relevance to the University of Ilosho (U .I.). Instead, the focus is on the political structure of U.I., on social stratification and mobility, and on problems of ethnicity. These closely interrelated problems are of great importance to the development of Nigeria, where U .I. is located.
