Rash Promises by James E Southern Pdf

Put off by Christian jargon and pat answers? James Southern relates how he was put off during his initial contact with reborners, as he labelled those who claimed to be born again. He recounts his skepticism, his conversion, his Bible School years, his life in Israel, and his intermittent backsliding. Rash Promises incorporates these life experiences, often humorous, with a study of rash promises and rash conduct by scriptural characters. Failing to learn what not to say and what not to do hinders one’s spiritual progress. And renouncing rash vows frees a person to live more fully for the Lord.

The Enforceability of Promises in European Contract Law by James Gordley Pdf

Civil law and common law systems are held to enforce promises differently: civil law, in principle, will enforce any promise, while common law will enforce only those with 'consideration'. In that respect, modern civil law supposedly differs from the Roman law from which it descended, where a promise was enforced depending on the type of contract the parties had made. This 2001 volume is concerned with the extent to which these characterizations are true, and how these and other differences affect the enforceability of promises. Beginning with a concise history of these distinctions, the volume then considers how twelve European legal systems would deal with fifteen concrete situations. Finally, a comparative section considers why legal systems enforce certain promises and not others, and what promises should be enforced. This is the second completed project of The Common Core of European Private Law launched at the University of Trento.

Age of Promises by David Thackeray,Richard Toye Pdf

Age of Promises explores the issue of electoral promises in twentieth century Britain - how they were made, how they were understood, and how they evolved across time - through a study of general election manifestos and election addresses. The authors argue that a history of the act of making promises - which is central to the political process, but which has not been sufficiently analysed - illuminates the development of political communication and democratic representation. The twentieth century saw a broad shift away from politics viewed as a discursive process whereby, at elections, it was enough to set out broad principles, with detailed policymaking to follow once in office following reflection and discussion. Over the first part of the century parties increasingly felt required to compile lists of specific policies to offer to voters, which they were then considered to have an obligation to carry out come what may. From 1945 onwards, moreover, there was even more focus on detailed, costed, pledges. We live in an age of growing uncertainty over the authority and status of political promises. In the wake of the 2016 EU referendum controversy erupted over parliamentary sovereignty. Should 'the will of the people' as manifested in the referendum result be supreme, or did MPs owe a primary responsibility to their constituents and/or to the party manifestos on which they had been elected? Age of Promises demonstrates that these debates build on a long history of differing understandings about what status of manifestos and addresses should have in shaping the actions of government.

Salvation Manual by Nsikan E. Johnny Pdf

This book is an illuminating guide on critical, sensitive and salvation-based topics that will intrigue, educate, inspire and above all promote the doctrine of salvation as the focal point of the entire Bible. The book highlights the fact that humanity's greatest need has never been the food that satiates his hunger, the building that gives him shelter, the status that makes him relevant or anything that caters to his physical needs, albeit it consists of topics that discuss humanity's daily needs and how they can be acquired in line with God's word. It adequately emphasises that the salvation of souls constitutes the greatest need and should occupy the top echelon of our priorities. The scripture says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). But what happens when the word is not correctly taught, or correctly taught but not completely broken down and hence not properly understood? This book breaks down biblical lessons in a manner that will be easily understood by readers. Many have read the Bible and taught from it wrongly because they missed the central theme of the Bible which is the salvation of our souls but the words in this book have been written to help the reader avoid reading the Bible amiss and achieve this precious and priceless gift - salvation - that will make existence in this world a meaningful one. The lessons readers will learn are drawn from the context of the scriptures, the express commands of God and from the lives and experiences of several biblical characters. Readers are made to examine some biblical characters' strengths and flaws, successes and failures and extract valuable lessons that will guide them on the journey through life. While people can scan through the Bible and get a general understanding of the stories within these chapters, this book will draw the readers' attention to vital lessons they may not have noticed.

On the Law of War and Peace by Hugo Grotius Pdf

“On The Law of War and Peace” was translated into many languages, and most law schools adopted it as the basis of the right of nations. Princes and statesmen consulted the book, and just as Alexander the Great always had a copy of Homer's ‘Iliad,’ so the great Gustavus Adolphus always had with him a copy of Grotius’ work, to remind himself that even the most successful general must respect some laws. Grotius’ strength lies in his moderation and in the fact that he quotes copiously from the best authorities to fortify his views .

How to Be Trustworthy by Katherine Hawley Pdf

We become untrustworthy when we break our promises, miss our deadlines, or offer up unreliable information. If we aim to be a trustworthy person, we need to act in line with our existing commitments and we must also take care not to bite off more than we can chew when new opportunities come along. But often it is not clear what we will be able to manage, what obstacles may prevent us from keeping our promises, or what changes may make our information unreliable. In the face of such uncertainties, trustworthiness typically directs us towards caution and hesitancy, and away from generosity, spontaneity, or shouldering burdens for others. In How To Be Trustworthy, Katherine Hawley explores what trustworthiness means in our lives and the dilemmas which arise if we value trustworthiness in an uncertain world. She argues there is no way of guaranteeing a clean conscience. We can become untrustworthy by taking on too many commitments, no matter how well-meaning we are, yet we can become bad friends, colleagues, parents, or citizens if we take on too few commitments. Hawley shows that we can all benefit by being more sensitive to obstacles to trustworthiness, and recognising that those who live in challenging personal circumstances face greater obstacles than other members of society--whether visibly or invisibly disadvantaged through material poverty, poor health, social exclusion, or power imbalances.

Toward Conformity to the Image of Christ by Fred R. Johnson Pdf

This two-volume work under the title, Toward Conformity to the Image of Christ, was initially prepared for upper division college students preparing for some branch of ministry. Volume One is subtitled, A Biblical Pattern of Spiritual Formation. God's moral nature is the perfect pattern, the human personality is the place for the pattern, and the problem of sin shatters the pattern. Volume Two is subtitled, A Biblical Product of Spiritual Formation. It shows that Spiritual Formation is the product of both the work of the Holy Spirit and of individual believers to develop personal character that resembles that of Jesus. After answering a variety of questions and objections, then the product is put to use in living out the Christian life in day to day activities. College religion faculty, pastors, evangelists, Youth Ministers, Church musicians, Christian Education Specialists, etc. would be interested in the books.
