Real World, Real Challenges by Sarah Sifers,Julene Nolan,Daniel Houlihan Pdf

"Real World, Real Challenges: Adolescent Issues in Contemporary Society provides a comprehensive overview of adolescent psychology. The book uses a problem-based learning format to engage students, facilitate learning and retention, and foster critical thinking skills. The introduction explains how biological, psychological, and social factors have redefined adolescence over the past century. Specific chapters are devoted to issues such as school and dating violence, mood and eating disorders, sexuality, and the impact of technology and social media. Rather than focusing on theory the learning modules of the text use these common, contemporary issues to illustrate important developmental psychology concepts. Many standard texts on the subject matter can be dry and lack focus on topics of interest to today's learners. Real World, Real Challenges uses a fresh, applied approach and encourages readers to confront the real world problems young people face in contemporary society. The book is most appropriate for advanced, undergraduate courses in adolescent psychology or classes that take an applied approach to adolescent development. Sarah K. Sifers, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The author of two textbooks, she researches the effectiveness of community-based programs in fostering resilience in children and adolescents. Julene Nolan, Psy.D., is a licensed school psychologist and adjunct faculty member at Minnesota State University, Mankato. She provides mental and behavioral health services for K- 12 children and their families. Daniel Houlihan earned his Ph.D. at the University of Utah. He teaches in the School of Psychology Doctoral Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He researches behavioral disorders and compliance and command types."

Robot Learning from Human Teachers by Sonia Chernova,Andrea L. Thomaz Pdf

Learning from Demonstration (LfD) explores techniques for learning a task policy from examples provided by a human teacher. The field of LfD has grown into an extensive body of literature over the past 30 years, with a wide variety of approaches for encoding human demonstrations and modeling skills and tasks. Additionally, we have recently seen a focus on gathering data from non-expert human teachers (i.e., domain experts but not robotics experts). In this book, we provide an introduction to the field with a focus on the unique technical challenges associated with designing robots that learn from naive human teachers. We begin, in the introduction, with a unification of the various terminology seen in the literature as well as an outline of the design choices one has in designing an LfD system. Chapter 2 gives a brief survey of the psychology literature that provides insights from human social learning that are relevant to designing robotic social learners. Chapter 3 walks through an LfD interaction, surveying the design choices one makes and state of the art approaches in prior work. First, is the choice of input, how the human teacher interacts with the robot to provide demonstrations. Next, is the choice of modeling technique. Currently, there is a dichotomy in the field between approaches that model low-level motor skills and those that model high-level tasks composed of primitive actions. We devote a chapter to each of these. Chapter 7 is devoted to interactive and active learning approaches that allow the robot to refine an existing task model. And finally, Chapter 8 provides best practices for evaluation of LfD systems, with a focus on how to approach experiments with human subjects in this domain.

Computer Vision Systems by Antonios Gasteratos,Markus Vincze,John K. Tsotsos Pdf

In the past few years, with the advances in microelectronics and digital te- nology, cameras became a widespread media. This, along with the enduring increase in computing power boosted the development of computer vision s- tems. The International Conference on Computer Vision Systems (ICVS) covers the advances in this area. This is to say that ICVS is not and should not be yet another computer vision conference. The ?eld of computer vision is fully covered by many well-established and famous conferences and ICVS di?ers from these by covering the systems point of view. ICVS 2008 was the 6th International Conference dedicated to advanced research on computer vision systems. The conference, continuing a series of successful events in Las Palmas, Vancouver, Graz, New York and Bielefeld, in 2008 was held on Santorini. In all, 128 papers entered the review process and each was reviewed by three independent reviewers using the double-blind review method. Of these, 53 - pers were accepted (23 as oral and 30 as poster presentation). There were also two invited talks by P. Anandan and by Heinrich H. Bultho ̈ ?. The presented papers cover all aspects of computer vision systems, namely: cognitive vision, monitor and surveillance, computer vision architectures, calibration and reg- tration, object recognition and tracking, learning, human—machine interaction and cross-modal systems.

Machine Learning Safety by Xiaowei Huang,Gaojie Jin,Wenjie Ruan Pdf

Machine learning algorithms allow computers to learn without being explicitly programmed. Their application is now spreading to highly sophisticated tasks across multiple domains, such as medical diagnostics or fully autonomous vehicles. While this development holds great potential, it also raises new safety concerns, as machine learning has many specificities that make its behaviour prediction and assessment very different from that for explicitly programmed software systems. This book addresses the main safety concerns with regard to machine learning, including its susceptibility to environmental noise and adversarial attacks. Such vulnerabilities have become a major roadblock to the deployment of machine learning in safety-critical applications. The book presents up-to-date techniques for adversarial attacks, which are used to assess the vulnerabilities of machine learning models; formal verification, which is used to determine if a trained machine learning model is free of vulnerabilities; and adversarial training, which is used to enhance the training process and reduce vulnerabilities. The book aims to improve readers’ awareness of the potential safety issues regarding machine learning models. In addition, it includes up-to-date techniques for dealing with these issues, equipping readers with not only technical knowledge but also hands-on practical skills.

Corruption, Grabbing and Development by Tina Søreide,Aled Williams Pdf

All societies develop their own norms about what is fair behaviour and what is not. Violations of these norms, including acts of corruption, can collectively be described as forms of 'grabbing'. This unique volume addresses how grabbing hinders development at the sector level and in state administration. The contributors - researchers and practitioners who work on the ground in developing countries - present empirical data on the mechanisms at play and describe different types of unethical practices.
