Historiography and Identity (Re)formulation in Second Temple Historiographical Literature by Louis Jonker Pdf
It is commonly accepted in various disciplines and contexts that history writing often (if not always!) contribute to the process of identity (re)formation. Using the past in order to find a renewed identity in new (socio-political and socio-religious) circumstances, is something that we also witness in Hebrew Bible historiographies. The so-called Deuteronomistic History, as well as the works of Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah, are often read from the perspective of a community trying to find a new identity in changed circumstances. The 18 essays by members of the Canadian Society for Biblical Studies published in this volume showcase the work of leading authorities on ancient Israelite and Jewish historiography as it intersects with the phenomenon of prophecy. To stop violence, we must build healthier personal and social worldviews. A quest for the truth beyond the self, community, and our worldviews needs to be implemented. We will need to improve our ability to think rationally. Most of all, we will need to learn how to intelligently use God's gift of freedom. Since our personal worldviews are our standards of reference for truth for designing and building our worldviews, we can only reach for and estimate the truth through non-threatening dialogue. We have been conditioned to forcefully defend fixed worldviews, which are not healthy. Healthier worldviews are needed to implement non-violent, intentional change to the worldviews of every individual, every organization, every community, and every dominating system. Healthier worldviews would lead to an integrated translormatiun of science, religion, education, and government. All worldviews need to be more inclusive of relevant information and be internally consistent. They need to represent the truth of reality as well as the truth in reality. Each personal worldview is that person's standard of reference for truth, whenever that person makes a decision. We tend to fix our worldviews with claims of certainty, rather than stable assumptions of truth. Such fixed standards are not adequate to bring peace to this world. We must learn to intentionally look beyond these fixed standards to estimate and seek the truth of what those worldviews ought to be in the future. No information should be seen as value free and independent of morality. We all use our personal worldviews when making moral decisions. Our worldviews all need to change periodically in order to incorporate continuing non-violent intentional change to our beliefs and values. A meaningful worldview builds a representation of reality upon a set of assumptions of truth. Reason demands non-contradiction, but it cannot promise a healthy worldview. This is a discussion of the relationship between one group of Singapore Chinese and their ancestral village in Fujian in China. It explores the various reasons why the Singapore Chinese continue to want to maintain ties with their ancestral village and how they go about reproducing Chinese culture (in the form of ancestor worship and religion) in the village milieu in China. It further explores the reasons why the Singapore Chinese feel morally obliged to assist their ancestral village in village reconstruction (providing financial contributions to infrastructure development such as the buildings of roads, bridges, schools, hospitals) and to help with small scale industrial and retail activities. Related to this is how the village cadres and teenagers, through various strategies, managed to encourage the Singapore Chinese to revisit their ancestral village and help with village reconstruction, thereby creating a moral economy. The main argument here concerns the desire of the Singapore Chinese to maintain a cultural identity and lineage continuity with their ancestral home. Ethnographically, this anthropological study examines two groups of Chinese separated by historical and geographical space, and their coming together to re-establish their cultural identity through various cultural and economic activities. At the theoretical level, it seeks to add a new dimension to the study of Chinese transnationalism and diaspora studies.
