Reclaiming Men's Spirituality by Christopher Felix Bezzina Pdf

Reclaiming Men’s Spirituality is a study that investigates men’s spirituality by exploring three research questions: Can a form of spirituality about men be identified and described, how can this spirituality be examined, and what is it that needs to be reclaimed? To answer these questions and at the same time remain committed to the importance of lived experience, this study opted to investigate the lives of men by attending to ten spiritual histories. The study is situated in Malta, and the ten spiritual histories provide access to various features, expressions, and contours that relate closely to men’s being. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with ten spiritual directors who have men as spiritual directees. Their contribution clarifies the structure of men’s spirituality, the effort required when directing male spiritual directees and the impact generated in the lives of men thanks to spiritual direction. To provide a frame of reference for the examination of all the gathered data, John of the Cross’s spiritual framework has been chosen as the mystical instrument against which men’s spiritualities are studied, leading to richer insights into the operations, motives, goals, and problems of such spiritualities.

Asian Christian Spirituality by Virginia Fabella Pdf

Asia is the birthplace of many great religions and spiritualities--spiritualities that draw wealth and meaning from the ancient past yet still address contemporary reality. Asian Christian Spirituality explores popular religious traditions in Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and India, emphasizing how these traditions foster a liberative Christian spirituality. From the commercial bustle of Seoul and Hong Kong to the forests of Indonesia and the Philippines, culture and context are the two most important factors in searching for a liberating spirituality. As Samuel Rayan points out, Asian spirituality can be mined not only from traditional sources (such as shamanism, animism, and folk Catholicism) but also from the stories of women, peasants, and other victims of oppression and domination. Christianity in Asia must concern itself with the economic and political conditions that dehumanize people, and must create new patterns of relationships that make life worth living. Asian Christian Spirituality shows how a spirituality faithful to a common Christian heritage, simultaneously rooted in particular cultures and traditions, can animate Christianity in Asia, and help Asian Christians address contemporary problems.

Reclaiming Two-Spirits by Gregory D. Smithers Pdf

A sweeping history of Indigenous traditions of gender, sexuality, and resistance that reveals how, despite centuries of colonialism, Two-Spirit people are reclaiming their place in Native nations. Reclaiming Two-Spirits decolonizes the history of gender and sexuality in Native North America. It honors the generations of Indigenous people who had the foresight to take essential aspects of their cultural life and spiritual beliefs underground in order to save them. Before 1492, hundreds of Indigenous communities across North America included people who identified as neither male nor female, but both. They went by aakíí’skassi, miati, okitcitakwe or one of hundreds of other tribally specific identities. After European colonizers invaded Indian Country, centuries of violence and systematic persecution followed, imperiling the existence of people who today call themselves Two-Spirits, an umbrella term denoting feminine and masculine qualities in one person. Drawing on written sources, archaeological evidence, art, and oral storytelling, Reclaiming Two-Spirits spans the centuries from Spanish invasion to the present, tracing massacres and inquisitions and revealing how the authors of colonialism’s written archives used language to both denigrate and erase Two-Spirit people from history. But as Gregory Smithers shows, the colonizers failed—and Indigenous resistance is core to this story. Reclaiming Two-Spirits amplifies their voices, reconnecting their history to Native nations in the 21st century.

Reclaiming the Body in Christian Spirituality by Thomas Ryan Pdf

This small, spirited book, a collection of reflections contributed primarily by the participants of a retreat and edited by its sponsor, an authority on spirituality, examines the role of the human body in the Christian spiritual life. It asks us to recover a conviction of the goodness of our bodies and how God created us so that we can reclaim a positive, healthy attitude toward our individual bodies, toward the social body, the community around us, including the Church, the "earthbody," the body of the natural world, and become spiritually whole. Fr. Thomas Ryan, as editor and contributor, leads with an introduction, reflections on the positive aspects of the human body, and the modalities of body expression in the Christian and non-Christian-Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox-traditions: meditation, prayer, yoga, exercise and rest, sex, fasting and feasting, silence and solitude, and acts of corporal mercy. He is followed by James Wiseman, James Dickerson, Casey Rock, and James Hall with a,short overview of historical Christian attitudes toward the body, the benefits of yoga and Kripalu philosophy for Christians, and the ways of integrating personal spiritual practices with political, social, and environmental justice, through mission groups, Manna Inc., L'Arche, and wilderness groups. Devotees as well as newcomers to health, fitness, especially yoga, nature, and spirituality rooted in the body, are sure to be receptive of its positive message.

Reclaiming Your Story by Merle R. Jordan Pdf

Merle Jordan argues that many people spend their adult lives struggling to distinguish between the imperatives of divine authority and the deeply rooted psychological authority of family structures. Employing the wisdom of his experience as a pastoral psychologist as well as the insights of clinical researchers and therapists, Jordan offers ways to demythologize false absolutes and to refocus distorted maps of reality.

Religion as Art Form by Carl L. Jech Pdf

If you find books such as Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion compelling but your faith heritage is also important to you, this book shows how you can affirm both. Taking a cue from Marcus Borg's contention that "scriptural literalism" is for many people a major impediment to authentic spirituality, Carl Jech describes how all religion can and should be much more explicit about its symbolic, metaphorical, and artistic nature. With a particular focus on mortality and the relationship of humans to eternity, the book affirms a postmodern understanding of "God" as ultimate eternal Mystery and of spirituality as an artistic, (w)holistic, visionary, and creative process of becoming at home in the universe as it really is with all its joys and sorrows. Religion as Art Form is a must-read for those who think of themselves as spiritual but not religious.

Reclaiming Religion from the Church by Frank Canatella Pdf

The first rule of life is "survive." And since we are necessarily social we must add the corollary, "together." All "oughts" derive from this two-part rule. Most of us understand this intuitively if not explicitly. The only issue to be resolved is how inclusive is our togetherness. Is it just our tribe, our nation, the northern hemisphere? Or, must we include the whole human family? These are the moral issues we must answer and they are empirical questions. Behavior has consequences. We have to ask ourselves, "Will such and such behaviors promote survival?" The answer can only come from the experience of the community. Present demographics will not allow us to elude the question much longer. Church rules can be faulted on a number of counts, not the least of which is that God gave us the rules so they can't change, even when experience indicates that they should. Also, the church leaders think the purpose of the rules is to save our souls and so our life here has been seriously neglected in many respects especially for the poor and the underclass because everything is supposed to be made right in the hereafter. This I regard as backward. It affirms those who oppress the poor. Scientists make inferences from empirical data and the results are always subject to revision. Church officials make inferences from myths and they are set in stone. A good example is the doctrine of Original Sin that is presented as an occult event that causes all our problems and about which we can do nothing. The church approved of slavery for the better part of two millennia because it was in place when the church was created and St. Augustine justified it as one of the punishments resulting from Original Sin. Clearly, our problem is ignorance, the kind we are born with and the kind we acquire through learning falsely. I call this Ignorance II after Gregory Bateson's Learning II (learning how to learn). Ignorance II is a learning dead end, learning how not to learn. We very obviously do not always know how to act in our own best interests. Our best chance of breaking out of this mold is through sharing the best of our communal experience to discover how to act in our own best inerests in the long run. This is how to develop a proper morality, one we can all live with. With a superior organization in place the church is positioned to unite us in the task of developing a proper morality. However, the church as presently structured can only evolve by backing into the future. It claims to already know everything that is necessary to know so it has difficulty learning, thus denying it's human origin and makeup. To change, the church requires a "spin" on history that demonstrates a development and continuity with the past instead of just saying, "We have been wrong." The People of God, the true Church, show signs of reclaiming religion through various dissident groups. These groups do not yet recognize the intimate connection between morality and survival. My hope is that this book will guide them toward that recognition.
