Recollections and Impressions of James A. McNeill Whistler (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Jerome Eddy Pdf
Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions of James A. McNeill Whistler Most of what is contained herein has been collected from time to time within the past ten years and jotted down for use in certain lectures on Whistler and his art. The lectures were, as is this book, a tribute to the great painter. The reminiscences are mostly personal. Many of the anecdotes - though perhaps equally familiar to others - were had from the artist's own lips. The views concerning his art, whether right or wrong, were formed while watching him at work day after day, and after many interviews in which, now and then, he would speak plainly concerning art. At the same time not so much as a thought must be attributed to him unless expressly quoted. The biographical data - just sufficient to furnish a connecting thread and aid in the appreciation - have been gathered from casual sources, and are, no doubt, subject to incidental corrections. Only when a duly authorized "life and letters" is published by those who have access to the material that must exist will the great artist be known by the world as he really was - a profoundly earnest, serious, loving, and lovable man. Meanwhile, those who believe in his art must - like the writer -speak their convictions for what they are worth. After Whistler by Linda Merrill,Robyn Asleson,Lee Glazer,Lacey Taylor Jordan,John Siewert,Marc Simpson,Sylvia Yount Pdf
This illustrated book - published to commemorate the centenary of the artist's death - addresses Whistler's extraordinary legacy and establishes his pivotal place in the history of American art.
THIS AUTHOR’S favourite subjects for biography have been wits, and he has already written on Sydney Smith, William Gilbert, Henry Labouchère, Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and Benjamin Disraeli. His seventh and last choice of famous wit is James McNeill Whistler, whose personality aroused more controversy in the art world of the nineteenth century than that of anyone else. WHISTLER is chiefly remembered today as an exquisite painter who revealed the twilight beauty of London’s river to the world, and as one who revolutionized interior decoration. But in his own time he was mainly notorious of his mental and physical combats, for his cutting wit, violent quarrels, and devastating attacks on art critics and academic pundits. HESKETH PEARSON concentrates on Whistler’s personality, shows how his nature was reflected in his art, tells the story of his extraordinary career, describes his quarrels, records his witticisms, explains the causes that made his character prone to conflict, and helps the modern reader to see the man as his friends and enemies who saw him. Having met several people who knew Whistler, the author is able to add fresh material to his portrait of the artist. Illustrated with 15 gravure plates.
James McNeill Whistler an Evolution of Painting from the Old Masters: Identified By Two Missing Masterpieces by Angelle M Vinet Pdf
The discovery of this masterpiece Whistler's "Portrait of William Merritt Chase," along with another important Whistler painting, "Harmony in Black, No10," reveals exciting new discoveries on Whistler's artistic methods, from the Old Masters and the artistic truisms of the Renaissance. Documented analysis including x-ray examination, forensics and recognized paintings by Whistler's followers will confirm this portrait and "Harmony in Black, No10," with x-ray revealing two lost paintings. These Whistler paintings connect scholarship and identify paintings worthy of merit and what makes a masterpiece a masterpiece.
A biography of James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) that dispels the popular notion of Whistler as merely a combative, eccentric and unrelenting publicity seeker, a man as renowned for his public feuds with Oscar Wilde and John Ruskin as for the iconic portrait of his mother.
James McNeill Whistler 1834-1863 by Patrick Chaleyssin Pdf
Whistler's work can be divided into four periods. The first was a research period in which the artist was influenced by the Realism of Gustave Courbet and by Japanese art. Whistler then discovered his own originality in the Nocturnes and the Cremorne Gardens series, thereby coming into conflict with the academics who wanted a work of art to tell a story. When he painted the portrait of his mother, Whistler entitled it Arrangement in Gray and Black, and this is symbolic of his aesthetic theories.
