Parallel Database Systems by Pierre America Pdf

This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop on parallel database systems organized by the PRISMA (Parallel Inference and Storage Machine) project. The invited contributions by internationally recognized experts give a thorough survey of several aspects of parallel database systems. The second part of the volume gives an in-depth overview of the PRISMA system. This system is based on a parallel machine, where the individual processors each have their own local memory and communicate with each other over a packet-switched network. On this machine a parallel object-oriented programming language, POOL-X, has been implemented, which provides dedicated support for database systems as well as general facilities for parallel programming. The POOL-X system then serves as a platform for a complete relational main-memory database management system, which uses the parallelism of the machine to speed up significantly the execution of database queries. The presentation of the PRISMA system, together with the invited papers, gives a broad overview of the state of the art in parallel database systems.

Parallel Database Techniques by Mahdi Abdelguerfi,Kam-Fai Wong Pdf

Parallel processing technology in the next generation of Database Management Systems (DBMSs) make it possible to meet challenging new requirements. Database technology is rapidly expanding new application areas brings unique challenges such as increased functionality and efficient handling of very large heterogeneous databases. Abdelguerfi and Wong present the latest techniques in parallel relational databases illustrating high-performance achievements in parallel database systems. The text is st5ructured according to the overall architecture of a parallel database system presenting various techniques that may be adopted to the design of parallel database software and hardware execution environments. These techniques can directly or indirectly lead to high-performance parallel database implementation. The book's main focus follows the authors' engineering model: A survey of parallel query optimization techniques for requests involving multi-way joins A new technique for a join operation that can be adopted in the local optimization stage A framework for recovery in parallel database systems using the ACTA formalism The architectural details of NCR's new Petabyte multimedia database system A description of the Super Database Computer (SDC-II) A case study for a shared-nothing parallel database server that analyzes and compares the effectiveness of five data placement techniques

High-Performance Parallel Database Processing and Grid Databases by David Taniar,Clement H. C. Leung,Wenny Rahayu,Sushant Goel Pdf

The latest techniques and principles of parallel and grid database processing The growth in grid databases, coupled with the utility of parallel query processing, presents an important opportunity to understand and utilize high-performance parallel database processing within a major database management system (DBMS). This important new book provides readers with a fundamental understanding of parallelism in data-intensive applications, and demonstrates how to develop faster capabilities to support them. It presents a balanced treatment of the theoretical and practical aspects of high-performance databases to demonstrate how parallel query is executed in a DBMS, including concepts, algorithms, analytical models, and grid transactions. High-Performance Parallel Database Processing and Grid Databases serves as a valuable resource for researchers working in parallel databases and for practitioners interested in building a high-performance database. It is also a much-needed, self-contained textbook for database courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

Database Recovery by Vijay Kumar,Sang Hyuk Son Pdf

Database Recovery presents an in-depth discussion on all aspects of database recovery. Firstly, it introduces the topic informally to set the intuitive understanding, and then presents a formal treatment of recovery mechanism. In the past, recovery has been treated merely as a mechanism which is implemented on an ad-hoc basis. This book elevates the recovery from a mechanism to a concept, and presents its essential properties. A book on recovery is incomplete if it does not present how recovery is practiced in commercial systems. This book, therefore, presents a detailed description of recovery mechanisms as implemented on Informix, OpenIngres, Oracle, and Sybase commercial database systems. Database Recovery is suitable as a textbook for a graduate-level course on database recovery, as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on database systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

Database and Expert Systems Applications by Pablo García Bringas,Abdelkader Hameurlain,Gerald Quirchmayr Pdf

st We welcome you to the proceedings of the 21 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications held in Bilbao. With information and database s- tems being a central topic of computer science, it was to be expected that the integ- tion of knowledge, information and data is today contributing to the again rapidly increasing attractiveness of this field for researchers and practitioners. Since its foundation in 1990, DEXA has been an annual international conference, located in Europe, which showcases state-of-the-art research activities in these areas. DEXA 2010 continued this tradition and provided a forum for presenting and discu- ing research results in the area of database and intelligent systems and advanced - search topics, applications and practically relevant issues related to these areas. It offered attendees the opportunity to extensively discuss requirements, problems, and solutions in the field in the pleasant atmosphere of the city of Bilbao, which is known for its driving industriousness, its top cultural venues and its rich and inspiring he- tage and lifestyle. The University of Deusto with its great educational and research traditions, and the hospitality which the university and the city are so famous for, set the stage for this year’s DEXA conference. This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the DEXA conference.

Readings in Database Systems by Joseph M. Hellerstein,Michael Stonebraker Pdf

The latest edition of a popular text and reference on database research, with substantial new material and revision; covers classical literature and recent hot topics. Lessons from database research have been applied in academic fields ranging from bioinformatics to next-generation Internet architecture and in industrial uses including Web-based e-commerce and search engines. The core ideas in the field have become increasingly influential. This text provides both students and professionals with a grounding in database research and a technical context for understanding recent innovations in the field. The readings included treat the most important issues in the database area--the basic material for any DBMS professional. This fourth edition has been substantially updated and revised, with 21 of the 48 papers new to the edition, four of them published for the first time. Many of the sections have been newly organized, and each section includes a new or substantially revised introduction that discusses the context, motivation, and controversies in a particular area, placing it in the broader perspective of database research. Two introductory articles, never before published, provide an organized, current introduction to basic knowledge of the field; one discusses the history of data models and query languages and the other offers an architectural overview of a database system. The remaining articles range from the classical literature on database research to treatments of current hot topics, including a paper on search engine architecture and a paper on application servers, both written expressly for this edition. The result is a collection of papers that are seminal and also accessible to a reader who has a basic familiarity with database systems.
