Recruitment, Retention and Restructuring by Association of College and Research Libraries. Ad Hoc Task Force on Recruitment & Retention Issues Pdf

This is a book about librarian and faculty collaboration - as it exists now and as it could exist. In a series of essays, the authors assert that collaboration will be the next great transition in higher education. The possibilities of librarians working across disciplines and traditional university boundaries are explored. Included are a review of the literature, case studies of exemplary programs at the institutional level, reports of surveys of informal collaborations, a directory of resources, as well as theoretical models of the collaborative enterprise.

Selection of the University Librarian by Ruth J. Person,George Charles Newman Pdf

This report on the process by which a university librarian is selected is based on interviews with key participants in searches for library directors at five medium to large universities, each of which had selected a new university librarian within the two years prior to the survey. It was found that the five universities--one private, one state-related, one member of a statewide university system, and two state universities (one rural and one urban)--had a number of common characteristics which contributed to a successful search, including relative openness with respect to the process, a clear understanding of affirmative action guidelines, a commitment to the library by academic officers, and interest from the three major constituent groups, i.e., librarians, faculty, and administrators. Several critical factors in the search process that were common to the searches were also found: (1) careful attention to the composition of the search committee; (2) management of group dynamics within the search committee; (3) accurate representation of the university to the candidates; (4) accurate knowledge on the part of the committee of the type of individual desired by academic officers; and (5) communication of the future direction of the university from academic officers to all involved in the search. The critical role of outsiders in searches, as well as the necessity for an "assertive" search are also considered. Copies of the interview questionnaire and the introductory cover letter are appended. (60 references) (Author/EW)

Diversity in Libraries by Raquel V. Cogell,Cindy A. Gruwell Pdf

Since the mid 1980s academic libraries have established minority residency programs in an effort to increase the representation of librarians of color in their institutions. Now more than a decade later, these programs continue to be developed. Essays written by librarians of color who participated in residency programs, and administrators whose institutions made the programs possible, remind us of the continuing need for diversity in academic libraries.

Libraries as User-centered Organizations by Meredith A. Butler Pdf

How do we begin to assess the impact of economic, technological, demographic, and management trends in our environment and understand the long term implications? How can administrators, managers and information professionals take advantage of these trends? How can librarians empower staff and change organizational hierarchies to create more responsive and rewarding environments? How do we restructure organizations to make them more learning- and student-centered and more responsive to the needs of new clienteles? These are just a few of the questions addressed in Libraries as User-Centered Organizations, which examines organizational change from the point of view that academic institutions are experiencing a paradigm shift in the definition of their mission, their focus, and their activities. As librarians move into a new paradigm of library as gateway and connector, they must also shift their focus from the information product to the user of information. This profound change in vision is explored in this book through the concept of user-centeredness, a focus on the habits, needs, desires, dislikes, abilities, and preferences of the user. Libraries as User-Centered Organizations explores a variety of important aspects of organizational change including: leadership styles sustaining and expanding staff empowerment and creativity collaboration between libraries and computer centers creating multicultural organizations remolding the library science educational structure organizational change in professional associations Libraries as User-Centered Organizations looks at current trends affecting higher education, research libraries, professional education for librarians, professional associations, and publishing from the point of view of some of the leaders in these fields and offers readers a context for viewing organizational change. The book is of particular assistance to library administrators and educators engaged in planning for change and rethinking operations and services.
