Redesigning the Future of Education in the Light of New Theories, Teaching Methods, Learning, and Research by ?enol Orakc? Pdf

Learning used to be confined to a physical place. Now, it’s no longer limited by walls or daylight or location. Learning happens in spaces that transcend these boundaries. These spaces can still have physical elements, but they are no longer defined by a physical footprint and constrained by the limitations of time, space, and matter. Learning can now take place on any device, in any place, and at any time. 21st century skills are one of the concepts we use most frequently when talking about innovative education. We see that the skills, referred to as 21st century skills, include cognitive skills such as creative thinking, problem solving, as well as many different social and emotional skills such as understanding, expressing, empathy and teamwork. Many educators now agree that not only academic knowledge is sufficient, but social-emotional skills play a role as much as academic knowledge in a person's success and happiness. Another accepted fact is the phenomenon of lifelong learning: the fact that education does not start at school but does not end at school, in fact, it is a process that should continue throughout life. While accepting all this, a subject that is not discussed much; how this holistic, lifelong learning is possible in a class in the form of 40 minutes lessons and 10 minutes of break. While we are designing various kinds of education programs for children to gain all these different skill sets in the classroom, do not we actually keep these skills in the easiest way, practically away from the environments they will acquire? In John Dewey's book, “Experience and Education” (1938), information obtained as detached from real life is depicted as wasted time and effort. Most teachers are already aware of this situation. For this reason, they try to explain math problems and literacy by linking them to children's experiences and lives as much as possible, and they do many big and small experiments in social sciences and science lessons. Can't we go one step further than this? Can't we make learning in life a part of our education system, instead of preparing small examples of real life for children? With many justified concerns such as assessment, security, teachers' pedagogical infrastructure, we miss out on the most important opportunities for education just because they are outside the walls of the school? This book aims to open new horizons in the journey of learning beyond the school walls in the world and contribute to the spread of learning in our society. In societies where constant change is the norm, schools today must prepare students to be successful in environments and contexts that may differ greatly from what we experience today. But, are we really thinking about the future? With contributions from seven continents, this book will reveal a ‘snapshot’ of some of our best thinking for building new education futures. Diverse experiences, visions, and ideas are shared to help spark new thinking among educators and policymakers, provoke conversation, and facilitate new ideas for meeting human development needs in a rapidly transforming world.

Theorizing the Future of Science Education Research by Vaughan Prain,Brian Hand Pdf

This book reviews the current state of theoretical accounts of the what and how of science learning in schools. The book starts out by presenting big-picture perspectives on key issues. In these first chapters, it focuses on the range of resources students need to acquire and refine to become successful learners. It examines meaningful learner purposes and processes for doing science, and structural supports to optimize cognitive engagement and success. Subsequent chapters address how particular purposes, resources and experiences can be conceptualized as the basis to understand current practices. They also show how future learning opportunities should be designed, lived and reviewed to promote student engagement/learning. Specific topics include insights from neuro-imaging, actor-network theory, the role of reasoning in claim-making for learning in science, and development of disciplinary literacies, including writing and multi-modal meaning-making. All together the book offers leads to science educators on theoretical perspectives that have yielded valuable insights into science learning. In addition, it proposes new agendas to guide future practices and research in this subject.

Changing Practices, Changing Education by Stephen Kemmis,Jane Wilkinson,Christine Edwards-Groves,Ian Hardy,Peter Grootenboer,Laurette Bristol Pdf

This book aims to help teachers and those who support them to re-imagine the work of teaching, learning and leading. In particular, it shows how transformations of educational practice depend on complementary transformations in classroom-school- and system-level organisational cultures, resourcing and politics. It argues that transforming education requires more than professional development to transform teachers; it also calls for fundamental changes in learning and leading practices, which in turn means reshaping organisations that support teachers and teaching – organisational cultures, the resources organisations provide and distribute, and the relationships that connect people with one another in organisations. The book is based on findings from new research being conducted by the authors – the research team for the (2010-2012) Australian Research Council-funded Discovery Project Leading and Learning: Developing Ecologies of Educational Practice.

Reforming Teaching and Teacher Education by Eija Kimonen,Raimo Nevalainen Pdf

What are the prerequisites for reforming education, and how can these reforms be seen in school development and culture? How should teacher education support this reform process? What are the principles and practices underlying the functioning of the schools of tomorrow? These questions are examined in this unique volume. The authors in this book argue that the central function of teacher education and education in general is to respond to the challenges brought on by the twenty-first century. According to this approach, the competencies and skills needed in the future are not merely a new addition to school activities, but rather something requiring a comprehensive reform of school culture encompassing teacher education, curricula, and teaching methods. Such a fundamental process of change in the action and thinking models used by schools would be an effort to achieve a complete transformation, the result of which would be schools developing into organizations that are both creative and imbued with a strong sense of community. A central attribute is that the creation of new knowledge is not just restricted to the classroom but also takes place in out-of-school environments. This would link learning to its natural context, eventually leading to an ideal instruction that is actively problem oriented, holistic, and life centered. This reform-minded volume is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the reform processes in teacher education, the second on the reforms of pedagogics at schools and teacher education institutions, and the third on the processes of reculturing schools. New prospects for active schools in the United States and Europe, as well as in Japan and China, are discussed.
