Rediscovering the British World by Phillip Alfred Buckner,R. Douglas Francis Pdf

Rediscovering the British World is one part of an ongoing attempt to approach British Imperial history from a different viewpoint, placing the colonies of settlement at the centre. Editors Phillip Buckner and Douglas Francis have included nineteen essays from expert scholars in the field, which cover a broad range of cultural, social, and intellectual topics in British imperial history from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The essays focus on the history of Britain and the Empire, with considerable emphasis on the self-governing dominions of Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They attempt to show the centrality of the Empire in the history of the nations created by the British diaspora overseas, while at the same time calling into question the extent of the existence of a "British World." The goal is not to wax nostalgic, but rather to re-examine the complex phenomenon of this far-reaching empire and to shed light on the ways in which it has shaped our world. Significant contributions were made by many people of colour with fascinating stories, including: the Kanaka, or Hawaiian Islanders, who constructed Fort Victoria, and members of the Kanaka community such as Maria Mahoi and William Naukana three Metis matriarchs—Amelia Connolly Douglas, Josette Legacé Work, and Isabelle M. Mainville Ross the Victoria Voltigeurs, the earliest police presence in the Colony of Vancouver Island, and who were primarily men of colour Grafton Tyler Brown, now known in the United States as one of the first and best African American artists of the American West Manzo Nagano, Canada’s first recorded immigrant from Japan and many more With information about various cultural communities in early Victoria and significant dates, May Wong’s City in Colour is a collection of fascinating stories of unsung characters whose stories are at the heart of Victoria’s history.

Rediscovering Thomas Adams by Wayne J. Caldwell Pdf

Suburbanization, affordable housing, mass transportation, loss of fertile lands -- these are modern problems, yet they are not new. Thomas Adams grappled with these same issues nearly a century ago, when he wrote Rural Planning and Development, a book that quickly became a touchstone for planners and planning in Canada. Reprinted for the first time and updated with commentaries by leading Canadian planners, this book highlights Adams’ influence on the planning profession and the continued relevance of his comprehensive vision for planning -- to move beyond the demands of the moment to embrace long-term strategies for building stronger rural communities.

Impressionism in Canada by A. K. Prakash,Guy Wildenstein,William H. Gerdts Pdf

Impressionist paintings are among the most prized artworks in the world, yet little has been written about Canadian impressionism. Now, with this book, we have a full account of the development of this revolutionary style in painting during the four decades after 1875, first in France, then in the United States, and finally in Canada. From the late 1860s on, as ambitious young artists from North America went to study in the academies in Paris and travel in Europe, they absorbed the influence of impressionism. By the mid-1880s, after it crossed the Atlantic to Boston and New York, Impressionism quickly became the favored style of art in the United States. As the century came to a close in Canada's two largest cities, Montreal and Toronto, Impressionism gradually gathered the support the returning Canadian painters needed from art dealers, collectors, exhibition societies, and the media. Within this context, the lives and works of fourteen fo the most significant Canadian artists, including William Blair Bruce, Maurice Cullen, J.W. Morrice, Laura Muntz Lyall, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, Helen McNicoll, and Clarence Gagnon, are examined in the second half of the volume. Briefly considered too are several other artists, such as core members of the famed Group of Seven, who for some time also employed Impressionist techniques in their art. Today, Canadian Impressionist paintings are not only among the most popular works of art at home but are attracting ever more attention and exhibition exposure in other countries too. With a Foreword by Guy Wildenstein and an Introduction by William H. Gerdts, this work has been extensively researched and lavishly illustrated with 494 plates and 159 figures. As such, it becomes the definitive volume on Canada's contribution to Impressionism - the most important development in Western art since the Renaissance.

Rediscovering Reverence by Ralph Heintzman Pdf

Drawing on familiar experiences as well as aspects of western and eastern spiritual traditions, Heintzman argues that religious practice is rooted in two basic ways human beings act in the world. It is therefore an element in the structure of the human spirit, not a phase in its history. Explaining the meaning of religious practice in contemporary language, Rediscovering Reverence is addressed to anyone who wants to explore the meaning and promise of a religious life. A unique and thoughtful meditation on the role of reverence in everyday life, Rediscovering Reverence presents new perspectives on modern faith, religion, and both personal and societal well-being.
