He offers his thoughts on how to apply the High-velocity IT guidance, inspired by Taiichi Ohno: "You have to face your own difficulties and solve your problems yourself. Stop trying to borrow wisdom - think for yourself". He elaborates on some of his favourite parts of the book, giving background information and sharing the 'making of' story that involved fifty people across eighteen countries. The book also contains insights that did not make the final cut of the ITIL book due to constraints regarding the scope and size, and in some cases, because they emerged after the book had been published. Chapter 1 is about how to start applying the guidance in ITIL®4 High-velocity IT. Chapter 2 contains my comments on the positioning and structure of ITIL®4 High-velocity IT, and its relationship with other ITIL modules. Chapter 3 is about the content. My main aim is to point out parts of ITIL®4 High-velocity IT that I consider particularly valuable, and to qualify some of the content by sharing considerations that played a role. I also share content that did not make the cut due to constraints regarding the scope and size of ITIL®4 High-velocity IT. In some cases, I have added insights that emerged after the content had been written. This volume presents an overview of the results of a European Union integrated program in which approximately two hundred earth scientists participated, drawn from all fields related to exploration. Two classes of modeling were addressed - geological modeling - the relationship between the conditions of sedimentation and the resulting reservoir conditions; and wave-propagation modeling - the investigation of wave-propagation through media of various degrees of complexity. Wave-propagation modeling was carried out either mathematically or physically with the most modern tools. An important aspect of the project was the inversion of seismic data, that is the determination of the parameters of the medium from observations. This problem is closely related to modeling since it is based on the inversion of the mathematical steps and often uses modeling for verification and updating. The geological data presents novel concepts with a coverage that is both broad in area and in discipline. The geophysical investigations are at the leading edge of current research. Although detailed results have been published separately by investigators, this volume is the only source of reference which summarises the results; but incorporating sufficient detail to enable the reader to follow the scientific reasoning.

I once called it, "Advanced Seismic Inter pretation," but the geophysicists who attended the courses always wondered when I was going to start dis cussing interpretation. They discovered at the end that I never did discuss interpretation as they knew it. No men tion was made of reflection picking, posting times, map ping, contouring, and things they already knew perfectly well. Instead, I discussed Fourier transforms, sampling theory, impulse responses, distortion operators, Wiener filters, noise in f-k space, velocity spectra, wave-equation migration, and direct detection of hydrocarbons as each of these topics appeared on the seismic scene. I wanted the geophysicists to think beyond the routine ofinterpre tation, to develop a better understanding of why seismic sections look as they do, to have a better feel for what digital processing is doing, for good or evil, to the seismic data. I attempted to stretch their minds. Whitehead said it best: "A mind once stretched by a new idea can never shrink to its former dimension. " May this book be a suc cessful mind-stretcher. R. L.
