This is the first in-depth, English-language history of modern Serbia in nearly half a century. It covers the period from the Serbian state's revolutionary rebirth in the early nineteenth century, under the rebel leaders Karadorde Petrovic and Milo? Obrenovic; its turbulent history of wars, uprisings and dynastic rivalries; the triumph of Yugoslav unification in 1918; and the catastrophe of occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941. It shows how the birth of the modern nation-state involved the creation of a new elite-dynasty, army and bureaucracy-whose rule over the peasantry generated a popular resistance that would ultimately take form in Nikola Pa?ic's mighty People's Radical Party. The resulting struggle between elitist Westernisers and pro- Russian populists became entwined with the struggle for pan-Serb and Yugoslav liberation and unification. These causes came together with the Sarajevo assassination of 1914, which triggered the First World War. Existing histories of the Yugoslav kingdom that emerged from that war focus on the national conflict between Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims and others, but Marko Attila Hoare challenges this narrative. He shows how the new kingdom's politics continued to be dominated by the ongoing internal Serbian power struggle, bringing renewed disaster to Yugoslavia and its peoples.

The autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia is little-known in the English-speaking world, even though it is a territory of high significance for the development of Serbian national identity. Vojvodina's multi-ethnic composition and historical experience has also encouraged the formation of a distinct regional identity. This book analyses the evolution of Vojvodina's identity over time and the unique pattern of ethnic relations in the province. Although approximately 25 ethnic communities live in Vojvodina, it is by no means a divided society. Intercultural cohabitation has been a living reality in the province for centuries and this largely accounts for the lack of ethnic conflict. Vassilis Petsinis explores Vojvodina's intercultural society and shows how this has facilitated the introduction of flexible and regionalized legal models for the management of ethnic relations in Serbia since the 2000s. "Contemporary analysis of Serbia's foreign policy in the middle of the nineteenth century has remained in a deep shadow of the "Načertanije", a document conceived in 1844 in Belgrade, as a result of collaboration between Serbia's interior minister Ilija Garašanin and F.A. Zach, the representative of the Polish political emigration from Paris, led by Prince A. Czartoryski, in the capital of the autonomous Principality of Serbia. Prince Czartoryski, author of Councils for Serbia's foreign policy in 1843, considered Serbia, the sole semi-independent state among Slavs in South-Eastern Europe, a nucleus of a wider, Serbia-led South Slav state that might endorse an anti-Russian and anti-Austrian policy as a support for his wider plans regarding the restoration of independent Poland. The over-ambitious pan-Slav probject of F. Zach (Serbia's Slavic Policy) was eventually modified by Garašanin to a more realistic and attainable plan, in accordance with Serbia's modest demographic and military potential, limited international experience and still humble administrative capacities. Planning the unification of the predominantly Serb-inhabited lands under Ottoman rule was appropriately adapted to the geopolitical realities of 1844. The foreign policy of Serbia under Garašanin, during the rule of the pro-Austrian Prince Alexander Karadjordjević and Garašanin's premiership under Russophile Prince Michael Obrenović, was balancing between various political options that were dominating Europe and the Balkans between the 1848 Revolution and the Crimean War and the first Balkan Alliance. Garašanin was continuously prudent and bold in pursuing realistic political ambitions regarding large-scale anti-Ottoman activities, by building a network of confidents and agents throughout Turkey-in-Europe that was to forment a joint insurrection against the Ottoman rule.
