Animals in the Military by John M. Kistler Pdf

This book pays tribute to the unrecognized warriors and unsung heroes of human warfare: millions of animals from a surprising variety of species, ranging from rodents to dolphins to llamas. When one thinks of war, armies of soldiers and assaults with bullets and bombs delivered by deadly machinery typically come to mind. Throughout human history, however, animals have also played significant roles in our armed conflicts. In Animals in the Military: From Hannibal's Elephants to the Dolphins of the U.S. Navy, author John M. Kistler examines these contributions, describing the work of animals in human warfare throughout time, from lowly insects to birds to elephants. Drawing on both ancient and modern sources, the book reveals the full scope of heroics and horror committed by—and against—animal warriors in three unique areas: animals in combat, animals in support, and animals in incidental and experimental roles. Each chapter describes a single species, chronologically recounting its fascinating place in human warfare over time, from insects used as stinging projectiles to message-delivering pigeons.

Animals in the Great War by Stephen Wynn,Tanya Wynn Pdf

“Cats, rabbits and even the bear that inspired Winnie the Pooh appear in remarkable photos of the 16 million animals caught up in World War One.” —DailyMail.com Animals in the Great War looks at the use of animals by all sides in the Great War and to what effect. In the main, it focuses greatly on horses, dogs and pigeons but also addresses the war efforts of other animals. In the early years of the war horses were, to a large extent, the only form of transport that was available to the British Army, ranging from use by cavalry units, artillery units as well others such as the Army Ordnance Corps for the conveying of ammunition supplies to men fighting at the front. Britain sent an estimated one million horses to fight in the war, most of them to France and Belgium, but only 60,000 of them ever returned home, and only then were they returned because of the intervention of Winston Churchill. Dogs also played a major role in the war, especially in the trenches on the Western Front. They were used as mascots by the different regiments and in some cases, they were companions for homesick soldiers. They were also used for sentry duties in the trenches as well as catching rats, and they were used as messengers and to sniff out wounded soldiers in No Man’s Land. Animals in the Great War explores how everyday domestic animals were transformed into remarkable wartime heroes, who more than did their bit for the war effort.

Animals and War: Confronting the Military-Animal Industrial Complex is the first book to examine how nonhuman animals are used for war by military forces. Each chapter delves deeply into modes of nonhuman animal exploitation: as weapons, test subjects, and transportation, and as casualties of war leading to homelessness, starvation, and death. With leading scholar-activists writing each chapter, this is an important text in the fields of peace studies and critical animal studies. This is a must read for anyone interested in ending war and fostering peace and justice.

Amazing Animals of WW1 by Anthony Babb Pdf

This book has been a long voyage of discovery. As time passed, I realised that my view of the treatment of the many animals in WW1 was completely wrong. Reading excerpts from soldiers who were there, instruction manuals and war diaries changed the picture in my mind to one of care and love. Millions were involved with animals in World War One. Most would not talk about their experiences and are no longer with us. The stories and information here will enable you to understand better what the animals did and their relationship with their carers. Book Rear Cover Description This is a book about the animals involved in WW1 that animal lovers can enjoy without fear. Animals were vital for the winning of this war. Where did they come from? Training, caring and disposal are also necessary, but how? Surprisingly, the level of care provided by the authorities was astonishing. The men in the front line were the ones who provided hands-on care, with real love. The book is mostly from a British perspective but includes others; many of our horses, for example, came from America. Some stories are factual, and others are fiction; all are based around accurate settings and events. Not all animals worked, e.g. pets, but their contribution to the men's morale is unquestionable. Here you will find love and care, knowledge and instruction, and the animals were unquestionably heroes.
