Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (Classic Reprint) by Preston Lafayette Ledford Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years by William Douglas Hamilton Pdf

Excerpt from Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years: 1861-1865 Years ago at one of the reunions of the Ninth Ohio Cavalry it was voted that I should write a history of our regiment. I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, - many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours. As a regiment the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, which belonged to the Army of the West, operated most of the time under general orders on its own responsibility. Often stationed quite in advance of the infantry, we were thus brought into close touch with the Southern people, and as a result dislikes on both sides were very much modified. Professional historians have written of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War. The incidents here preserved are side-lights on its dark background but they helped in a small way to modify the bitterness of it all. History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 (Classic Reprint) by James Ford Rhodes Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 This is not an abridgment of my three volumes on the Civil War but a fresh study of the subject in which I have used my work as one of many authorities. Whenever I have transferred sentences, paragraphs and pages, I have done so because, after a study of the original authorities, I found that I could give my conclusions no better than in my first work. Since writing the three volumes, published respectively in 1895, 1899 and 1904, much new original material has come to light and valuable treatments of certain periods of the Civil War have appeared. I owe especial indebtedness to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies; Diary of Gideon Welles; Life of Rawlins, which J. H. Wilson kindly permitted me to read in manuscript before publication; the Letters and Diaries of John Hay; Miss Nicolay's Personal Traits of Lincoln; Life and Letters of General Meade; W. R. Livermore, Story of the Civil War; J. Bigelow, Jr., The Campaign of Chancellorsville; W. R. Thayer, Life of John Hay; The Reminiscences of Carl Schurz. I owe a literary revision of this volume to my son, Daniel P. Rhodes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray by Mamie Yeary Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray: 1861-1865 I performed no special deeds of valor, but always tried to do my duty as a soldier. I missed the battle of Jonesville, being sick with typhoid fever. While I can't claim a discharge or parole, I would do the same again under similar circumstances, and would deem it no sin to violate an oath by taking up arms again. My father gave a Republican $200 to allow me to take the oath. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Campaigns of the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861 1865 (Classic Reprint) by Thomas H. M'Cann Pdf

Excerpt from The Campaigns of the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861 1865 Most historians of the war recite the events chronologically, that is breaking from the campaigns of one section to describe those of another. We, however, have departed from this order, believing that a continuous account of each section will impress on the memories of the readers a clearer and more comprehensive conception of these intricate affairs. General Lee, His Campaigns in Virginia by Walter H. Taylor Pdf

Excerpt from General Lee, His Campaigns in Virginia: 1861-1865; With Personal Reminiscences Nearly thirty years ago I ventured to publish Four Years with General Lee, in which my primary Object was to assist in establishing the fact of the great numerical Odds against which the army under General Lee had to contend in its encounters with the Federal armies opposed to it. General Lee had expressed a purpose to do this, and after his death, before its accomplishment, the duty seemed logically to devolve upon me. Personal Reminiscences of a Maryland Soldier in the War Between the States, 1861-1865 by George Wilson Booth Pdf

Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of a Maryland Soldier in the War Between the States, 1861-1865: For Private Circulation Only With the greatest regard for truthfulness, I can say that never for one moment did the question of slavery or the per petuation of that institution enter into the decision of my course. When the first blow was struck at Sumter, and men were forced to take sides in the approaching conflict, that which impelled to decision was the love of freedom, and the constitution of my country, as I understood it, as opposed to the vindictiveness of the northern politician and his hatred of our southern brethren, as evidenced in the disregard of public faith and the coercive measures which were being set on foot to bring them under the rod. As a member of the military force of the State, I promptly responded to the call to arms, to maintain the public peace, and to prevent the passage of northern troops through its territory, and when the efforts of our authorities became futile, and their functions were usurped by the federal gov ernment; when it became apparent, without question, that the hope of State action was impracticable, by reason of this military occupation, then, without hesitation, I chose to cast my fortune with the south and to bear a part in the great struggle.
