Report of the FAO Expert Workshop on Assessment and Monitoring of Aquaculture Sector Performance by Junning Cai,Nathanaël Hishamunda,Elisabetta Martone,Neil B. Ridler Pdf

"Aquaculture is a fast growing sector with complex environmental, economic and social impacts. Assessment and monitoring of such impacts is essential for stakeholders in both the public and private sectors to conduct evidence-based policy-making and/or sector management. However, the lack of information and knowledge (especially quantitative indicators) about aquaculture sector performance has been a global and perennial issue. The issue is especially critical for regions with a less developed aquaculture sector (e.g., Africa). Nearly 30 experts from different countries attended the FAO Expert Workshop on Assessment and Monitoring of Aquaculture Sector Performance with the aim of discussing the methodologies and techniques of, and share global, regional and national experiences in, assessing and monitoring the performance of aquaculture. The workshop includes 28 presentations under 6 thematic topics by experts from various disciplines. A user-friendly tool called World Aquaculture Performance Indicators (WAPI) was presented in the workshop. Three working groups were established to discuss issues related to assessment and monitoring of aquaculture's social, economic and environmental performance. This report documents the information, knowledge and insights generated by the workshop"--Publisher's description.

The African workshop was one of three regional consultative workshops carried out as a follow-up to the 2009 inception workshop of the FAO Extra-Budgetary Programme on Fisheries and Aquaculture for Poverty Alleviation and Food Security. The workshops built on the outcomes of the Global Conference on Small-Scale Fisheries held in Bangkok in October 2008 and referred to the recommendations made by the 26th Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in March 2009 with regard to the potential development of an international instrument and programme for small-scale fisheries. The purpose of the workshops was to provide guidance on the scope and contents of such an international small-scale fisheries instrument and on the possible priorities and implementation modalities for a global assistance programme. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020 by FAO Pdf

The 2020 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture has a particular focus on sustainability. This reflects a number of specific considerations. First, 2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). Second, several Sustainable Development Goal indicators mature in 2020. Third, FAO hosted the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability in late 2019, and fourth, 2020 sees the finalization of specific FAO guidelines on sustainable aquaculture growth, and on social sustainability along value chains. While Part 1 retains the format of previous editions, the structure of the rest of the publication has been revised. Part 2 opens with a special section marking the twenty fifth anniversary of the Code. It also focuses on issues coming to the fore, in particular, those related to Sustainable Development Goal 14 and its indicators for which FAO is the “custodian” agency. In addition, Part 2 covers various aspects of fisheries and aquaculture sustainability. The topics discussed range widely, from data and information systems to ocean pollution, product legality, user rights and climate change adaptation. Part 3 now forms the final part of the publication, covering projections and emerging issues such as new technologies and aquaculture biosecurity. It concludes by outlining steps towards a new vision for capture fisheries. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience – policymakers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed everyone interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
