Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture: Analysis of submissions by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

The Koronivia joint work (KJWA) on agriculture is a decision that was reached at the UN climate conference (COP23) in November 2018, officially acknowledging the significance of the agriculture sectors in adapting to and mitigating climate change. The paragraph 2 of the KJWA decision provides a list of initial elements on which Parties were invited to submit their views. Recognizing that KJWA does not mandate the UNFCCC secretariat to produce a synthesis of submissions made, a number of Parties attending the Dialogue suggested that FAO might provide a factual summary of the submissions. The analysis takes into consideration the 21 KJWA submissions made by Parties and 27 by observers and published by 20th of May 2018 on the UNFCCC submission portal, as well as the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) and Least Developed Countries (LDC) group submissions.

Koronivia joint work on agriculture: analysis of submissions on topic 2(A) – Modalities for implementation of the outcomes of the Five in-session workshops by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) was established in November 2017, as a new process to advance discussions on issues related to agriculture under the two Subsidiary Bodies (SBs) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). The decision recognizes the fundamental importance of agriculture in responding to climate change, and calls for joint work between the SBs on specific elements, including through workshops and expert meetings. This analysis aims to summarize the views submitted on KJWA topic 2(a): Modalities for implementation of the outcomes of the five insession workshops on issues related to agriculture and other future topics that may arise from the joint work on agriculture. The summary intends to make the wide range of views submitted more easily accessible to those interested – including Parties and observers to the UNFCCC, but also FAO staff working on climate change as well the public. The analysis takes into consideration the 17 submissions by Parties and the 14 by observers on topic 2(a) of the KJWA, submitted on KJWA topic 2(a) by 10 December 2018.

Canada’s Top Climate Change Risks by The Expert Panel on Climate Change Risks and Adaptation Potential Pdf

Canada’s Top Climate Change Risks identifies the top risk areas based on the extent and likelihood of the potential damage, and rates the risk areas according to society’s ability to adapt and reduce negative outcomes. These 12 major areas of risk are: agriculture and food, coastal communities, ecosystems, fisheries, forestry, geopolitical dynamics, governance and capacity, human health and wellness, Indigenous ways of life, northern communities, physical infrastructure, and water. The report describes an approach to inform federal risk prioritization and adaptation responses. The Panel outlines a multi-layered method of prioritizing adaptation measures based on an understanding of the risk, adaptation potential, and federal roles and responsibilities.

The impact of disasters and crises on agriculture and food security: 2021 by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

On top of a decade of exacerbated disaster loss, exceptional global heat, retreating ice and rising sea levels, humanity and our food security face a range of new and unprecedented hazards, such as megafires, extreme weather events, desert locust swarms of magnitudes previously unseen, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Agriculture underpins the livelihoods of over 2.5 billion people – most of them in low-income developing countries – and remains a key driver of development. At no other point in history has agriculture been faced with such an array of familiar and unfamiliar risks, interacting in a hyperconnected world and a precipitously changing landscape. And agriculture continues to absorb a disproportionate share of the damage and loss wrought by disasters. Their growing frequency and intensity, along with the systemic nature of risk, are upending people’s lives, devastating livelihoods, and jeopardizing our entire food system. This report makes a powerful case for investing in resilience and disaster risk reduction – especially data gathering and analysis for evidence informed action – to ensure agriculture’s crucial role in achieving the future we want.

Farming in a Changing Climate by Ellen Wall,Barry Smit,Johanna Wandel Pdf

In farming systems across Canada, effective risk management is necessary to deal with drought, flooding, and extreme weather, and to adapt to altered climate and weather conditions. Unfortunately, climate change risks and opportunities are not always well understood among researchers and policy makers in the Canadian agri-food sector. This book addresses that gap by providing a wide-ranging synopsis of what climate change means for Canadian agriculture, exploring different approaches to the topic, and presenting examples of current research. It covers all agricultural regions and a wide variety of commodity production and farming systems. This comprehensive survey synthesizes twenty years of research on climate change and Canadian agriculture.

State of Food and Agriculture by Food and Agriculture Organization Pdf

Unless action is taken now to make agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, climate change impacts will seriously compromise food production in countries and regions that are already highly food-insecure. The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, represents a new beginning in the global effort to stabilize the climate before it is too late. It recognizes the importance of food security in the international response to climate change, as reflected by many countries prominent focus on the agriculture sector in their planned contributions to adaptation and mitigation. To help put those plans into action, this report identifies strategies, financing opportunities, and data and information needs. It also describes transformative policies and institutions that can overcome barriers to implementation. The State of Food and Agriculture is produced annually. Each edition contains an overview of the current global agricultural situation, as well as more in-depth coverage of a topical theme."
