Representative Plants a Manual for the Use of Students, of Botany in Secondary, Schools and Colleges (Classic Reprint) by H. S. Pepoon Pdf

Excerpt from Representative Plants a Manual for the Use of Students, of Botany in Secondary, Schools and Colleges IN the judgment of the author the study of plants ought to begin with the seed plants, as these forms are more or less familiar to the student and, therefore, appeal to him as something not altogether strange. They have a further hold upon him because many of the forms studied have close association with his everyday life. The first part of the manual, therefore, deals with the general subject of the seed plants, treating of them under the great divisional headings of Seeds, Roots, Stems, Leaves, Flowers, and Fruits. There is undoubtedly more material for study than can be covered in a half year, with a labora tory time of four hours a week, but it is believed the teacher should have abundant subject matter from which to select a course that will be applicable to the conditions prevailing in his school. There is much diversity of opinion, and consequently of practice, among those teaching botany as to the initial subject for the fall semester. Some begin with leaves, some with seeds, some with fall flowers and fruits, some with the algae (as pleurococcus). This order of beginning is based upon the assumption that the study of seed plants (part I of this manual) is taken up during the second or spring semester (the most logical procedure in the Opinion of the author). The study of plants, as stated above, ought to begin with these familiar forms, hence an ideal course in botany would start in February and end in January of the following year, the spore plants following the seed plants (tie. From the known to the unknown). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Botany for High Schools (Classic Reprint) by George Francis Atkinson Pdf

Excerpt from Botany for High Schools Several chapters are devoted to a study of the peculiar and unusual forms of nutrition by certain plants that have become closely associated in this respect with other organisms, and by the fungi and bacteria, which, lacking chlorophyll, must obtain certain food by other means than that employed by the green plants. In this connection special attention is given to some of the more important micro-organisms which are beneficial to man because of certain products of their activity, or which are harmful as causal agents in disease. One chapter is devoted to the study of the more useful plants of the farm, orchard and garden or of those employed in industrial operations. Chapters are also devoted to the principles of plant develop ment and plant breeding, subjects which are of absorbing inter est to all and of special practical importance to the farmer and horticulturist. Botany by D. Thoday Pdf

Originally published in 1915, this textbook provides a comprehensive and readily understandable treatment of botany. Principally aimed at secondary school plant science students and botanists in preparation for examinations, the book assumes no prior scientific knowledge and identifies and describes the different types of plant communities and the biology behind how these communities flourish and thrive. The book is divided into six sections: 'The functions of plant organs', 'Form and structure', 'Reproduction', 'The classification of plants', 'Plants in relation to their environment' and 'Seedless plants'. Clearly written, self contained, detailed and replete with illustrations and photographs, this book will serve as an indispensable reference guide for those who are beginners in the subject but also as a trustworthy compendium for students, scholars and specialists, and will be of considerable value to anyone interested in horticulture, phycology and ecology.

A Text-Book of Botany, for Secondary Schools by John M. Coulter Pdf

Excerpt from A Text-Book of Botany, for Secondary Schools The several editions of Plant Studies, designed for use in secondary schools, were combined abridgments of Plant Relations and Plant Structures. Although this arrangement involved a certain amount of repetition and lack of continuity, it was felt that these faults would be corrected by the competent teacher, whose chief desire would be to secure points of view in reference to botanical material. During the five years that have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of Plant Studies, the opinions of many experienced teachers have been obtained. These opinions have been based upon repeated use of the book, and have been of the greatest possible service in developing definite ideas as to the adjustment of the subject to the needs of the schools. The natural outgrowth of this cooperation between author and teachers has been the preparation of the present Text-Book of Botany, which seeks to express their combined judgment. There has been substantial agreement as to the nature of the material and the points of view, the only differences of opinion being such minor ones of presentation as must always be found among equally competent teachers. The Teaching Botanist by William F. Ganong Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching Botanist: A Manual of Information Upon Botanical Instruction; Together With Outlines and Directions for a Comprehensive Elementary Course IT may appear at first sight that the title of this work is of wider scope than its contents. Addressed broadly to the teaching botanist, and professing to serve as a manual of information upon botanical instruction, it nevertheless deals chiefly with one phase of botanical teaching; namely, with its elementary presentation as a science. Yet in this it represents the actual condition of the problems in botanical teaching at the present day. On the one hand, our university and advanced college teaching, carried on as investigation or in that spirit, represents a well-nigh ideal relation of teacher to student; and on the other, the botanical part of nature study in the lower schools has hardly yet begun to attract the attention it deserves. It is just between these two, between advanced college and lower school work, that is, in elementary courses in Botany treated as a science, whether in high school or college, that the present problems lie. Here is the real centre of discus sion, effort, and advance in botanical teaching to-day. This part of botanical teaching is now in a state of wonderfully rapid expansion and transition. Three causes are contributing to this result: first, the natural reaction from its former extreme backwardness second, a widening recognition of the value of the sciences, of which Botany is a leading one, in general education.
