Res Metrica by William Ross Hardie Pdf

Excerpt from Res Metrica: An Introduction to the Study of Greek Roman Versification I am reluctant to trouble the reader with what is more or less personal, but it seems necessary to explain how this book came to exist. In the spring of 1912 I was asked to review Schroder's Horazens Versmasse, fur Anfdnger erklart, and I did not find that it solved the problem; it was not a thing which, if translated, would be helpful to 'beginners' in this country. In the summer it occurred to me to try the experiment of writing an account of Horace's lyric metres myself, and I wrote it, merely as an experiment and without the slightest intention of publishing it. Shortly after this I learned from Professor Lindsay that he was interested in getting something done towards making metrical knowledge more accessible to students; what he had in mind was finding somebody to translate Bickel's section on Metre in Gercke and Norden's Einleitung in die Alterthums-wissenschaft. But Bickel's treatment, he agreed, was not satisfactory for our purpose; like Schroder's it was too technical and too condensed for the ordinary reader. I showed him my experimental account of Horace's metres, and chiefly through his instigation and encouragement I wrote in the following summer accounts of some of the more familiar metres such as the Hexameter and Iambic Trimeter. The Lithuanian Metrica by Artūras Dubonis,Darius Antanavičius,Raimonda Ragauskienė,Ramunė Šmigelskytė-Stukienė Pdf

This volume analyzes the history of the Lithuanian Metrica—the chancellery books of the Lithuanian grand duke—from the formation of its books in the mid-fifteenth century until now. It reveals how the first Metrica books emerged in the second half of the fifteenth century, discussing the titles given to them in different periods in history, and explains why the Lithuanian Metrica should be considered the state archive of early Lithuania. Material hitherto unknown in academic literature about the fate of the Lithuanian Metrica at the end of the eighteenth century, in the last years of the existence of the joint Polish-Lithuanian state, is also revealed in this account. The book dedicates a great deal of attention to the history of the publication and research of the documents and books of the Lithuanian Metrica, which are now kept in Moscow, Russia, as a historical source.

Damasus of Rome by Pope Damasus I Pdf

Damasus of Rome makes available in English the epigraphic poetry of Damasus, bishop of Rome from 366 to 384. The translations are accompanied by the Latin text as well as by commentary on the literary, topographic, and archaeological features of Damasus' inscribed epigrams. Antonio Ferrua published the last critical edition of Damasus' poetry in 1942. Since Ferrua's ground-breaking edition, however, much has changed. Recent scholarship has challenged the Damasan authorship of several epigrams, other pieces have been reinstated as Damasan, and archaeology has added fragments that were not known in 1942. Moreover in recent years new ways of appreciating Late Latin poetry have revolutionized thinking about many poets contemporary with Damasus. Damasus of Rome, therefore, not only offers new translations but updates the corpus and criticism of Damasus' poetry. A full introduction situates Damasus in his times by considering his troubled election and the issues that dominated Rome and his papacy. The introduction also sets the poems within the broader sweep of the history of epigraphic poetry at Rome and relates them both to the development of the Christian catacombs and to the emergence of the cults of the Roman saints. Modern scholarship readily acknowledges that the years of Damasus' episcopacy were pivotal ones in the transformation of Rome into a late antique Christian city. His poetry, much of it inscribed at the suburban tombs of the Roman saints and martyrs, played an incalculable but significant role in the redefinition of both Roman and Christian identity in this remarkable age. Damasus of Rome now makes that poetry more readily available to scholars and students alike.

Lucretius and the Transpadanes by Louise Adams Holland Pdf

In the absence of tape recordings from antiquity, we have a limited knowledge of how classical Latin prose or verse sounded as it was rendered orally. Yet we do know that the spoken word varied greatly from place to place, regardless of how much uniformity the written language maintained. Louise Adams Holland considers the geographical basis for these linguistic differences, and advances new arguments for the origin of Lucretius. She shows that he came from the same area of northern Italy—the Transpadane—as Catullus and Virgil, not from Rome, as the majority of his critics have contended. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
