Res Metrica by William Ross Hardie Pdf

Excerpt from Res Metrica: An Introduction to the Study of Greek Roman Versification I am reluctant to trouble the reader with what is more or less personal, but it seems necessary to explain how this book came to exist. In the spring of 1912 I was asked to review Schroder's Horazens Versmasse, fur Anfdnger erklart, and I did not find that it solved the problem; it was not a thing which, if translated, would be helpful to 'beginners' in this country. In the summer it occurred to me to try the experiment of writing an account of Horace's lyric metres myself, and I wrote it, merely as an experiment and without the slightest intention of publishing it. Shortly after this I learned from Professor Lindsay that he was interested in getting something done towards making metrical knowledge more accessible to students; what he had in mind was finding somebody to translate Bickel's section on Metre in Gercke and Norden's Einleitung in die Alterthums-wissenschaft. But Bickel's treatment, he agreed, was not satisfactory for our purpose; like Schroder's it was too technical and too condensed for the ordinary reader. I showed him my experimental account of Horace's metres, and chiefly through his instigation and encouragement I wrote in the following summer accounts of some of the more familiar metres such as the Hexameter and Iambic Trimeter. Seneca's Troades by Elaine Fantham Pdf

Elaine Fantham provides here a fresh Latin text of Seneca's Traodes and an English version, with an extensive introduction and critical commentary--the first separate treatment of the play in English since Kingery's 1908 edition. Arguing that the Troades was not intended for stage production, the author also discusses the atmosphere of Rome at the time the play was written, when both political and poetic life were felt to be in decline. Although Seneca's plays reflect his experience of tyranny, corruption, and compromise, they are enriched by his contract with the nobler world of poetry. Demonstrating how Seneca loved and imitated the Augustan poets, Professor Fantham reveals the originality that is part of his imitation. Professor Fantham discusses not only the particular characteristics of Seneca's generation but the interplay of his moral and poetic concerns in relationship to his subject--the Trojan captivity.By analyzing his reactions to accounts of this theme in Homer, Euripides, and Augustan epic, she explains his methods and motives in composition. Comparison of the play with Seneca's other works and with other drama exposes some inconsistency, formulaic writing, and excess of ingenuity. It also reveals the influence of epic in loosening his dramtic form and makes apparent his immense vitality. Elaine Fantham is Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto and author of Comparative Studies in the Republican Latin Imagery (Toronto). Originally published in 1983. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Prosody and Purpose in the English Renaissance by O. B. Hardison Jr. Pdf

Originally published in 1989. In Prosody and Purpose in the English Renaissance the eminent scholar O. B. Hardison Jr. sets out "to recover the special kinds of music inherent in English Renaissance poetry." The book begins with a thorough and wide-ranging survey of the development of prosodic theory from the ancient ars metrica tradition to the sixteenth century, with special emphasis on such issues as the relation of verse form and genre, the relation of syntax to prosody, and the role of language reform in shaping Renaissance prosody. The second part of the book considers the impact of prosodic traditions on specific literary works and verse forms, among them Surrey's Aeneid, Heywood's translation of Seneca's Thyestes, Sackville and Norton's Gorboduc, and the dramatic and epic verse of Marlowe, Shakespeare, Spenser, and Milton. Throughout, Hardison examines not only how poets crafted their verse but why. He explores authorial purposes ranging from technical attempts to match sound and genre to the lofty aims of improving the vernacular or ennobling culture, from the dramatist's practical search for verse forms suited to the stage to Milton's quest for a meter fit to convey divine relation.

A.E. Housman by Christopher Stray Pdf

A.E. Housman (1859-1936) was a man of many apparent contradictions, most of which remain unresolved 150 years after his birth. At once a deeply emotive lyric poet and a precise and dedicated classical scholar, he achieved fame in both of these diverse disciplines. Although his poetic legacy has received much scholarly analysis, and yet more attention has been devoted to reconstructing his private life, no previous work has focused on Housman the classical scholar; yet it is upon scholarship that Housman most wished to leave his mark. This timely collection of papers by leading scholars reassesses the breadth and significance of Housman's contribution to classical scholarship in both his published and unpublished writings, and discusses how his mantle has been passed on to later generations of classicists.
