Police Violence by William A. Geller,Hans Toch Pdf

Although the prevalence of police-citizen conflict has diminished in recent decades, police use of excessive force remains a concern of police departments nationwide. This timely book focuses on what is known and what still needs to be learned to understand, prevent, and remediate police abuse of force. The topics covered include: a theory of police abuse of force; the causes of police brutality; measures of its prevalence; the violence-prone police officer; public opinion about police abuse of force; the issue of race; officer selection, training, and attitudes; police unions and police culture; administrative review; procedural justice and the review of citizen complaints; the role of lawsuits; and a survey of police brutality abroad. In the final chapter Geller and Toch suggest new directions for research and practical innovations in law enforcement, from which both police and citizens can benefit. The contributors to this volume are scholars of criminology, criminal justice, social psychology, law, and public administration; former police managers; a police union leader; civilian oversight agency administrators and analysts; civil liberties advocates; police litigation expert witnesses; and media commentators. The combination of theoretical and practical perspectives makes this book ideal for students and scholars of democratic policing and for those in police departments, government, and the media charged with addressing and understanding the problem of improper exercise of force.

Resisting Arrest by Robert A. Rushing Pdf

A volume in the Cultural Studies Series edited by Samir Dayal An innovative and entertaining look at genre, popular culture, enjoyment, and psychoanalysis. Detective fiction, a category that, broadly defined, runs the gamut from Oedipus Rex to "The Purloined Letter," continues to draw a range of fans and scholars, and to play a pivotal role in popular entertainment, contemporary literature, and psychoanalytic theory. But how do we derive pleasure from reading about or watching a detective’s exploits? Is our enjoyment in the vicarious experience of genius? Or in witnessing the commission of a crime, an equally vicarious experience of violence? Resisting Arrest looks at the detective genre in its many different cultural manifestations, from popular fiction (Christie) to high literature (Eco), from art films (Antonioni) to popular television series (Monk). In each case, Rushing finds that detective stories have less to do with fulfilling our hidden desires, as psychoanalytic explanations have traditionally asserted, than with purposively thwarting them. He argues that the genre is in fact constituted principally by the promises on which it fails to deliver, including the vicarious experience of both genius (readers expecting to play Sherlock Holmes are almost always cast as Watson) and antisocial violence, so that our pleasure is based on what Slavoj Zizek has called "the endless circulation around the always-missed object." Organized around the key ideas that structure the detective genre ("Desire," "Repetition," "Violence"), Resisting Arrest offers a thoroughly new interpretation that will appeal to scholars interested in questions about genre and cinema studies, popular culture, and psychoanalysis.

Civil Procedure by Howard M. Erichson,Maria Glover Pdf

Civil Procedure primes students to engage at a high level in the classroom. Howard M. Erichson and J. Maria Glover offer clear explanations and frameworks to help students see what is fascinating and important about each topic in civil procedure. By the time students arrive in the classroom, they will have a solid understanding not only of the basic mechanics of civil procedure, but also why the topic matters in the real world of litigation. The case selection reflects this commitment. Rather than featuring cases that raise quirky issues at the periphery, the authors chose cases to help students understand the core purposes and difficulties of each aspect of civil procedure. The notes and questions guide students step by step to better understand the implications of each case. Throughout, the authors offer insights on the implications of procedural rules as a matter of policy and as a matter of litigation strategy. Professors and students will benefit from: Clear explanations of each topic to prime students for case reading and class discussion. Careful case selection that highlights the core aspects of each topic in civil procedure. Notes and Questions that guide students, step by step, not only to understand case holdings and procedural story lines, but also to appreciate the difficulties and nuances that may otherwise be invisible to first-year students. “Terminology Tips” to define terms clearly—helping first-year law students learn the unfamiliar and sometimes-baffling language of civil procedure. “Strategy Sessions” to help students see how procedural rules affect litigation strategy and settlement dynamics—allowing the book to speak to students as future lawyers in practice, not as merely academic learners. “The Big Picture” boxes to help students step back from each topic to see broader trends, policies, and implications. Up-to-date cases as well as chapters structured to take account of changes in legal doctrine. Teaching materials include: A thorough and honest Teachers’ Manual that speaks directly to teachers with candid advice about how to think about course design and how to teach each case and each topic.
