Evaluation of the biotic integrity of dynamic lotic environments is crucial to maintaining the successful functioning of watershed ecosystems. Routine biological monitoring is necessary to identify the influence of environmental degradation on aquatic life and measure the effects of both short and long-term environmental variation. Though New York State has a rich history of statutory biological monitoring along Hudson River tributaries, longitudinal analyses of benthic macroinvertebrate data using multidimensional scaling (MDS) and multimetric indices (MMI) are limited. Here, I use six family-level metric indices, multidimensional scaling (MDS) and indicator species analysis to evaluate biotic integrity along the Saw Kill River (Annandale, NY). Invertebrate collection took place between August 1st and September 2nd, 2017 at 3 distinct locations along the Saw Kill. Historical data from Budd and Strayer (1998) were incorporated into compositional analysis to assess the influence of global change, changing land-use, and land-use intensity on invertebrate communities. The results indicate a significant change in benthic macroinvertebrate communities of the Saw Kill over time as well as legacies of historical land-use in reported species composition and richness scores. Increasing evenness and richness of invertebrate communities at each site suggest an increase in biological integrity throughout the stream reach sampled despite evidence of global change. Although I do not demonstrate causal links between changing land-use (reforestation of catchment area, decreasing agricultural/mixed uses, etc.) and in-stream invertebrate composition, these data suggest linked changes. This study demonstrates the value of long-term longitudinal data sets and supports the conclusion that longitudinal biological assessment of lotic ecosystems can provide valuable insight into existing anthropogenic influences on riverine environments and the application of future watershed development plans.

This report presents the results of an experiment conducted in artificial streams in which the growth of benthic algae was studied in relation to the phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in the water. The goal of the study was to determine whether benthic algal biomass in the upper Athabasca River is limited by the availability of phosphorus or nitrogen. The results include the taxonomic, growth, and biomass responses by periphytic algae to phosphate additions of up to 50 micrograms per liter. The report also develops a model describing change in relative peak biomass with phosphorus addition, using data from the Athabasca experiments. Comparisons are made with a similarly derived model using results from experiments on the South Thompson River.

A braided river is one that, over some part of its length, flows in multiple, mobile channels across a gravel floodplain. In New Zealand, many braided rivers remain in a relatively unmodified condition, but increasing demands for hydro-electricity generation, irrigation, gravel extraction and flood protection works are placing pressure on these systems. However, apart from a limited number of studies on the ecology of individual species or reaches, there has been little coordinated ecological research to assess the overall values and function of braided river ecosystems in New Zealand. This review summarises the international and New Zealand literature on braided rivers, with particular emphasis on benthic invertebrate ecology. Braided rivers typically experience short-term channel migration within the active bed and greater lateral channel migration across the entire floodplain in the longer term. Channel migration occurs because steep headwater tributaries supply highly variable discharges and mobile erodable substrates to the mainstem. Braided rivers typically possess extended floodplains, which may contain a mosaic of floodplain habitats ranging from highly unstable main-stem channels to stable spring complexes. Main channel aquatic invertebrate communities are frequently low in diversity and dominated by the leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium spp., but also chironomids and elmid beetles. In contrast, floodplain springs can have highly diverse communities rich in amphipods, mayflies, caddis, snails and chironomids. Groundwater and floodplain pond habitats also occur frequently and can contain several specialist taxa. Braided rivers and their floodplains are spatially complex, temporally dynamic habitats with high landscape- and reach-scale biodiversity values. The challenge facing managers is to protect this biodiversity within the context of increasing human demands on the rivers. This report highlights the particular threats and management issues associated with braided rivers in New Zealand and identifies areas where future research is required.
