Revival Type by Paul Shaw Pdf

An illuminating account of the design inspirations and technical transformations that have shaped the digital typefaces of the 21st century In this fascinating tour through typographic history, Paul Shaw provides a visually rich exploration of digital type revival. Many typefaces from the pre-digital past have been reinvented for use on computers and mobile devices, while other new font designs are revivals of letterforms, drawn from inscriptions, calligraphic manuals, posters, and book jackets. Revival Type deftly introduces these fonts, many of which are widely used, and engagingly tells their stories. Examples include translations of letterforms not previously used as type, direct revivals of metal and wood typefaces, and looser interpretations of older fonts. Among these are variations on classic designs by John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni, William Caslon, Firmin Didot, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, and Nicolas Jenson, as well as typefaces inspired by less familiar designers, including Richard Austin, Philippe Grandjean, and Eudald Pradell. Updates and revisions of 20th-century classics such as Palatino, Meridien, DIN, Metro, and Neue Haas Grotesk (Helvetica) are also discussed. Handsomely illustrated with annotated examples, archival material depicting classic designs, and full character sets of modern typefaces, Revival Type is an essential introduction for designers and design enthusiasts into the process of reinterpreting historical type.

Is Every Typeface a Revival? by BA Visual Communication ZHdK Pdf

This publication was initiated during a Type Design brief at Zurich University of the Arts. Students were tasked to select an typeface published before 1999, to which they had a strong emotional connection, either positive or negative. Parallel to articulating personal emotions, students also collected information about the designer, type foundry, historical context and technology of production that led to the creation of the typeface. Then they proposed a contemporary redesign or revival. The design methodology was flexible, allowing for a range of approaches: from a classic revival in which the designers used their skills to digitize a typeface that was unavailable (or available in poor quality only), to a different design interpretation of the typeface. It was also possible to use the historical typeface as a mere formal or conceptual inspiration for a new creation. In different ways, then, the students investigated the definition, role and limitation of a revival typeface today. Their research and design processes are reflected in the texts which the students present in this publication, along with specimen pages for their typeface. The texts grew out of a two-weeks writing class at Zurich University of the Arts called Designers as Writers. Considering a broad range of writing practices pursued by designers long before (and also while), academic thesis writing took hold at art schools, from Jan Tschichold, Anna Simons and Hildegard Korger to Adrian Frutiger and Otl Aicher, from Hans-Rudolf Lutz and Fiona Ross to Zuzana Licko, Dexter Sinister, Alphabettes and more, the students familiarized themselves with (various combinations of) four basic approaches to writing: autobiographical, programmatic, historiographical and theoretical. These approaches informed daily writing exercises and staged impromptu readings in the evening, and eventually they also informed, to various degrees, the texts about the typefaces.

From Asbury University Revival to the Russian Revival: Read about Twenty Revivals of the Twentieth Century by G. J. Hocking Pdf

How many countries experienced a religious revival during the 20th century? According to this new book on church revival history, there were, at the very least, twenty such revivals occurring in various parts of the world. Revival swept from Asbury University, Australia, through America, and across the European continent; all within the space of one century. Why This Book? I wrote The Twentieth Revivals of the Century because there are so many stories that need to be told. Stories of sweeping revivals, which happened all across the globe. Spiritual awakenings that occurred in countries making headlines today--sometimes for all the wrong reasons. Nations like North Korea's Pyongyang and Japan, which incidentally almost became a Christian nation, leading up to the twentieth century. At this time, Christianity began gaining ground at a rapid pace. Such was the impact of the revivals covered in this book heading into the twentieth century. So, can we see a repeat of such revival fervour in the twenty-first Century? Was the recent Asbury Revival comparable with the one seen there in the 1970s? Does it measure up to the same basic criteria or pass the 'smell test' of how recent revivals have come about? These question, although not directly answered will show the the so-called Asbury revival was missing two basic ingredients, the preaching of the gospel and conversion of the masses.

Ignite For Revival by Rev. Dr. Wilson Rugira Pdf

Revival is when you agree to let yourself be led and judged by the Word of God and the action of the Holy Spirit until you are in turmoil. Revival is when our actions are placed on the divine scale and when the believer discerns the time we live. Revival is the transition from sleep to wakefulness, cessation of anesthesia, coma. Revival is the resumption activity after an interruption, like spring, harvesttime, and renewing of life. Are our actions the result of our communion with the Lord, the works that the Lord has prepared in advance to glorify the Lord? The Lord's return is near, and revival prepares Christians to meet God, for we are not to be cold nor lukewarm but boiling for the Lord.

Revival by Martyn Lloyd-Jones Pdf

In every era the church needs revival—certainly today as much as ever. And in the heart of every committed Christian there is the longing for personal revival—to know the quality and depths of spiritual reality, and the presence of God in one's personal life. This was the deepest desire of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, one of the great 20th-century Bible expositors. It was also the purpose behind this series of messages which were first given on the 100th anniversary of the Great Revival which started in Wales, and swept across England and throughout the United States and to the far corners of the world. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones recognized, it is a rare time in the history of the church when there is a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit— and a time of special interest of every Christian who longs for revival today. As Dr. J. I. Packer writes in his foreword, Dr. Lloyd-Jones believed in "the necessity of revival—that is, a quickening divine visitation—as the only vent that can avert ultimate spiritual disaster. The thrustful urgency of the sermons in this book testifies to the depth of his conviction that without revival in the church there is really no hope for the Western world at all." Dr. Lloyd-Jones deftly draws principles from the lives of Old and New Testament characters as well as expounding some of the great prayers of the Bible. Clearly and forcefully, he presents a masterful exposition of the circumstances accompanying revival in the past, why each generation needs it, and how it will come about today. We must come to the sovereign God, forsake our sin, and wait upon Him for this special, essential outpouring. God, bring us revival!

Bowling Alone: Revised and Updated by Robert D. Putnam Pdf

Updated to include a new chapter about the influence of social media and the Internet—the 20th anniversary edition of Bowling Alone remains a seminal work of social analysis, and its examination of what happened to our sense of community remains more relevant than ever in today’s fractured America. Twenty years, ago, Robert D. Putnam made a seemingly simple observation: once we bowled in leagues, usually after work; but no longer. This seemingly small phenomenon symbolized a significant social change that became the basis of the acclaimed bestseller, Bowling Alone, which The Washington Post called “a very important book” and Putnam, “the de Tocqueville of our generation.” Bowling Alone surveyed in detail Americans’ changing behavior over the decades, showing how we had become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbors, and social structures, whether it’s with the PTA, church, clubs, political parties, or bowling leagues. In the revised edition of his classic work, Putnam shows how our shrinking access to the “social capital” that is the reward of communal activity and community sharing still poses a serious threat to our civic and personal health, and how these consequences have a new resonance for our divided country today. He includes critical new material on the pervasive influence of social media and the internet, which has introduced previously unthinkable opportunities for social connection—as well as unprecedented levels of alienation and isolation. At the time of its publication, Putnam’s then-groundbreaking work showed how social bonds are the most powerful predictor of life satisfaction, and how the loss of social capital is felt in critical ways, acting as a strong predictor of crime rates and other measures of neighborhood quality of life, and affecting our health in other ways. While the ways in which we connect, or become disconnected, have changed over the decades, his central argument remains as powerful and urgent as ever: mending our frayed social capital is key to preserving the very fabric of our society.
