Ridgeway by Peter Vronsky Pdf

In this groundbreaking narrative, historian, investigative journalist and filmmaker Peter Vronsky uncovers the hidden history of the Battle of Ridgeway and explores its significance to Canada’s nation-building myths and traditions. On June 1, 1866, more than 1,000 Fenian insurgents invaded Canada across the Niagara River from Buffalo, N.Y. The Fenians were mostly battle-hardened Civil War veterans; the Canadian troops sent to fight them came from a generation that had not seen combat at home for more than 30 years. Led by inexperienced upper-class officers, the volunteer soldiers were mostly young, some as young as 15 years old. They were farm boys, shopkeepers, apprentices, schoolteachers, store clerks and two rifle companies of University of Toronto students hastily called out from their final exams. Many had not fired live rounds from their rifles even once. When they fought the Fenians near the village of Ridgeway the next day, a single rifle company of 28 students took the brunt of a counter-attack by 800 insurgents and suffered the most killed and wounded. The events of June 2, 1866, were covered up by the Macdonald government. The story was falsified so thoroughly that most Canadians today have not heard of the first modern battle in which Canadians died.

Life Lived Wild by Rick Ridgeway Pdf

At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild, Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his readers, though, to do the final sort of which is which."--Amazon.

Ridgeway by Scian Dubh Pdf

Ridgeway: An Historical Romance of the Fenian Invasion of Canada is a historical look at the Irish invasion of Canada. The Fenian raids were carried out by the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish Republican organization based in the United States, on British Army forts, customs posts, and other targets in Canada in 1866, and again from 1870 to 1871. Several separate incursions by the Fenian Brotherhood into Canada were undertaken to bring pressure on Great Britain to withdraw from Ireland, although none of these raids achieved their aims.

Rambling Man Walks The Ridgeway by Andrew Bowden Pdf

All good journeys start somewhere. There is always a beginning. There is always the place where it all starts. The place where the journey starts may be amazing. It may be mundane. It may be glamorous. It may be dour. It may be exciting and adventurous. Or it may be besides a road a few miles away from Swindon. The Ridgeway goes for the Swindon based option to start its journey; a National Trail that follows the part of the absolutely ancient former "green" road known as The Ridge Way. The modern route is just a bit shorter the original 400 mile one. The National Trail was opened in 1973 and provides a route for walkers connecting Overton Hill in Wiltshire with Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire; an 87 mile route with ancient forts, barrows, white horses, monuments and more. Or, if you're Rambling Man, you get rural pubs playing trance music and revelations about 1980s television programme Button Moon, that shake you to the core.

Ridgeway's Bride by Will DuRey Pdf

Cassie Edmond was puzzled by the odd behaviour of those around her. First it was the curious bark from their dog Butte, then the old Ute called Charlie who sometimes called to trade for coffee and flour but now sat silent on his droop-headed paint at the yard gate. Finally it was her father, lifting down his Winchester to go hunting for meat when the meal she'd been preparing was ready for the table. But when Brad Edmond returned home, carried by Charlie Ute and a stranger, his life slipping away, his back shredded by shotgun pellets, it was the start of a night of unexpected violence for Cassie, and days of trouble for the stranger Walt Ridgeway.

Alone on the Ridgeway by Holly Worton Pdf

Alone on the Ridgeway is the inner journey of the author's solo 87 mile walking adventure along one of England's National Trails in 2016. This book is ideal for walkers who are new to doing a long distance trail, as it includes practical information and how to prepare for such a journey. The main focus, however, is the inner journey of the author as she reconnects with herself on the trail. This is not a guidebook or a book full of cultural and historical details. It's designed to help you decide whether the Ridgeway is the right trail for you, and if so, how to start planning for it.More than just a walking travelogue or memoirs of a walking holiday, this book contains Holly's reflections on walking the Ridgeway, including lessons learned and practical information to help you plan your Ridgeway hiking adventure. It includes a suggested packing list, gear recommendations, and other useful tips, such as when to walk the Ridgeway, where to stay, and how much you'll need to budget.
