The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church by Frank Leslie Cross,Elizabeth A. Livingstone Pdf

Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable one-volume reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,000 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, including theology, churches and denominations, patristic scholarship, the bible, the church calendar and its organization, popes, archbishops, saints, and mystics. In this revision, innumerable small changes have been made to take into account shifts in scholarly opinion, recent developments, such as the Church of England's new prayer book (Common Worship), RC canonizations, ecumenical advances and mergers, and, where possible, statistics. A number of existing articles have been rewritten to reflect new evidence or understanding, for example the Holy Sepulchre entry, and there are a few new articles. Perhaps most significantly, a great number of the bibliographies have been updated. Established since its first appearance in 1957 as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, ODCC is an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.

The General Chapter in a Religious Institute by Elizabeth M. Cotter Pdf

This book examines the historical antecedents of the concept of general chapter, the supreme authority in an institute of consecrated life. This provides the basis for an examination of the contemporary understanding of the nature of its power and authority, as portrayed in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The general chapter is analysed in terms of its juridic status, collegial nature, participative character and representative function as well as its dynamic aspects and faith dimension. The author applies the findings to one institute of consecrated life, Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Loreto Branch. This application provides an example of the challenges inherent in working participatively and collaboratively within a hierarchical structure. Because consecrated life has an inalienable ecclesial dimension, understanding authority and power and their exercise in institutes of consecrated life has relevance for understanding authority and its exercise in other organs of authority at all levels in the church.

The Autonomy and Hierarchical Dependence of Religious Institutes by Kaitharath Anto Lazar SAC Pdf

The promulgation of the 1983 Code of Canon Law has opened new vistas of opportunity for institutes of consecrated life by giving a preponderance of legislative work to institutes and by recognising the Council's directives to return to the spirit of the founders. The new legislation takes a definitive departure from the 1917 Code of Canon Law regarding religious institutes. The reform that is effected in the 1983 Code of Canon Law with regard to religious institutes comes in the form of a new legislation on the internal autonomy of institutes delineated in c. 586. The innovatory character of this canon and its various nuances for institutes puts this canon into a unique position among the general canons on institutes and societies. The juridical expression of the concept of autonomy in c. 586 is paired with the juridical expression of the concept of dependence in c.576. Dependence of institutes on the hierarchy highlights the inherent competence of the ecclesiastical authority to regulate the closer following of Christ by the profession of the evangelical counsels.

Legal Flexibility and the Mission of the Church by Will Adam Pdf

Legal scholars and authorities generally agree that the law should be obeyed and should apply equally to all those subject to it, without favour or discrimination. Yet it is possible to see that in any legal system there will be situations when strict application of the law will produce undesirable results, such as injustice or other consequences not intended by the law as framed. In such circumstances the law may be changed but there may be broad policy reasons not to do so. The allied concepts of dispensation and economy grew up in the western and eastern traditions of the Christian church as mechanisms whereby an individual or a class of people could, by authority, be excused from obligations under a particular law in particular circumstances without that law being changed. This book uncovers and explores this neglected area of church life and law. Will Adam argues that dispensing power and authority exist in various guises in the systems of different churches. Codified and understood in Roman Catholic and Orthodox canon law, this arouses suspicion in the Church of England and in English law in general. The book demonstrates that legal flexibility can be found in English law and is integral to the law of the Church, to enable the Church today better to fulfil its mission in the world.

Canon Law by Libero Gerosa Pdf

This volume offers a comprehensive and consistently theological interpretation of Canon Law such as has scarcely been attempted by any of the other manuals in use. It is inspired by the key conciliar notion of communio ecclesiarum, implying a structural and human reality in which is embodied a theological dimension, namely, the grace conceded by means of word and sacrament and guaranteed by apostolic succession, for which Canon Law is founded, not only anthropologically and sociologically, but also theologically. The whole of Canon Law, in this perspective, conforms to and clarifies the original elements of the church: word, sacrament, apostolic succession, and charism. It also agrees with Hans Urs von Balthasar's notion that Canon Law has the function of guaranteeing that the church as communio is and continues to be a community in love: in that love whose origin is Jesus Christ and which is given to humanity by the Holy Spirit.
