The Ground Zero Cross by Brian J. Jordan Pdf

Two days after the terrible attack against the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, a union construction worker made a remarkable discovery within the ruins of World Trade Center 6. He saw a cross-like beam that stood on top of a heap of debris. He was stunned by its significance as were countless others after him. The purpose of this book is to trace the thirteen-year odyssey of this iconic cross from World Trade Center 6, to its position atop a concrete abutment within the World Trade Center during the recovery and rebuilding period, to the outside wall of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church across from Ground Zero and finally to the National 9/11 Memorial Museum where it remains today. The odyssey also includes a three-year legal battle whose appellate decision found that the Constitution of the United States does not preclude the presence of the Ground Zero cross within the National 9/11 Memorial Museum. This book is the author’s personal memoir. He is a Franciscan priest who, through many uncertain days, was the unofficial guardian of the Ground Zero cross. The concurrent themes of the book treat spirituality, grief sharing, selfless sacrifice, architecture, church history, biblical theology, and litigation. The book tells the story of many obstacles transcended on the way to the triumph of the Ground Zero cross.

Ghosts of New Orleans by Rosary Hartel O'Neill Pdf

Both anthologies are about New Orleans: the past and the present. This author has grown up in this city, and there is a certain timelessness about it - the past definitely influences the present. All the plays are permeated with the sensuousness, decadence and bewilderment of brave and driven people living in chaos, confusion, extreme pleasure and delight. I hope you get a taste of this rich jambalaya of life as you experience these plays. Volume Two contains historical plays, mostly Victorian, with characters driven by stratified society and tradition. Knowledge of New Orleans history made me want to adapt Uncle Vanya. I loved the play but felt its details were too Russian. I took the bones of Vanya and put it on a plantation called Waverly, the last sugarcane plantation in Louisiana, and called my play Uncle Victor. That play won a number of awards and hooked me on historical drama. I also researched Edgar Degas' visit to New Orleans in 1872 and wrote a nine-cast show, so struck was I by all Degas' relatives who had lived with him in 1872. Degas had tried to save his Uncle's failing cotton business and create new roots in the city of his mother. He fell prey to scandal and decadence. I spent days visiting Kate Chopin's house in Cloutierville, La. and interviewed descendents of Chopin's lover Albert Sanpitie and town members about the scandals of her life. I researched in French and English all the books on Degas. I did similar research in New York and Paris for Beckett at Greystones Bay and John Singer Sargent and Madame X, which are loosely tied to New Orleans. We are glad Degas did go back to Paris and paint and didn't succumb to the temptations of New Orleans. We are pleased Sargent refused to change his scorned portrait of Madame X and that Kate Chopin forged a way to raise her six children and still write.

In Quest of the Jewish Mary by Mary Christine Athans Pdf

Jesus was born and raised as a Jew in first-century Palestine. A great deal of theological study has focused on the Jewish cultural and religious context of his life and ministry. It is only natural that this attention should lead us to a new approach to his mother, Mary of Nazareth. In this book, Mary Christine Athans draws on historical research, the fruits of post-Vatican II Jewish-Christian dialogue, the insights of feminist theology, and contemporary spiritual reflection to rediscover the Jewish Mary - a woman of enormous courage, strength, and prayer.

I Have Come to Tell the World That God Exists by JUNE KLINS Pdf

In 1981 a beautiful lady appeared to six young people in the village of Medjugorje in what is now Bosnia-Herzegovina. She said, I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God. She told them that She was the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Queen of Peace. She has continued to appear since 1981 to give messages of peace, love and joy. She is confiding ten secrets to each visionary and promises to leave a visible sign at the place of the apparitions in Medjugorje. This time of grace is for conversion and deepening of faith. After the visible sign, those living will have little time for conversion. Many books have been written about Medjugorje, but this one, and Volume I and Volume II of this series, are different. They include not only information about Medjugorje and talks and interviews with the visionaries, but also heartfelt testimonies of people who have been healed and changed through Medjugorje, and advice, written from the heart by ordinary people, on how to live the messages. This book will truly touch your heart and lift your spirits.

Living the Rosary by Fr. John Phalen Pdf

In this book of meditations on the meaning of the Rosary, Rev. John Phalen, C.S.C., invites readers to open their eyes and their hearts to God's presence in their daily lives through this ancient devotion. Much more than a "how-to" book, Living the Rosary employs scripture, the lives of the saints, and Phalen's pastoral experiences to lead readers into a deep appreciation of the personal import of the mysteries of the Rosary. As president of Holy Cross Family Ministries--the organization founded by Patrick Peyton, the "Rosary Priest"--Phalen has traveled the world, giving retreats and workshops on the Rosary to thousands. His meditative guide situates each of the twenty "mysteries" of the life of Jesus within both biblical and modern stories of conversion and spiritual growth. Beginning with his own vocation story (an example of "annunciation"), Phalen offers twenty different stories--some scriptural, some personal, all of them practical--that will help readers better understand and live each mystery of the Rosary. An explanation of how to pray the Rosary is included.

Rosary Primer by Mark G. Boyer Pdf

This book, a primer, serves as an introduction to a devotional practice known as the Rosary: Rosary means garden of flowers or necklace of beads. The word bead comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning prayer. Thus, the rosary is a garden of prayer or a necklace of prayer. After explaining how one prays the Rosary, the author presents eighty reflections on what is known as the Mysteries of the Rosary: four sets of five mysteries, each with four options for each of the twenty mysteries. Each entry contains a Scripture verse from The Christian Bible (New Testament) that illustrates the mystery under consideration, a Celebrated notation indicating when the mystery appears on the annual liturgical calendar, a short reflection, and a suggested focus for the pray-er in making a personal application of the reflection as he or she mediates on the specific decade of the rosary. Each entry leads the pray-er down a path to deeper insight into the mystery being prayed.

A Spirituality for Doing Justice by Dennis A. Jacobsen Pdf

Dennis Jacobsen brings his many years of experience doing congregation-based organizing for justice into conversation with unique spiritual reflections. Jacobsen has learned along the way that deeper reflection must precede organizing action. He says, "As I age, I have respect for those who faithfully enter the inner room of their soul to meet and love God. Social action is messy and disruptive and noisy." Jacobsen turns to his work creating and meditating on icons to connect biblical themes and Christian personalities to guide those who are preparing for congregation-organizing and faith-based social action. His unique perspectives help anyone engaged in such work go deeper in prayer and devotion before diving into the messy work of organizing. This book follows his first volume, Doing Justice: Congregations and Community Organizing, in which Jacobsen explored biblical and theological reasons congregation-based organizing offers a faithful way of living out the teachings of Jesus. In this new volume, he seeks to integrate spiritual practices (reflections on iconography, in particular) that he claims are foundational to congregation-based community organizing. The book includes introductory chapters to describe his own spiritual practice around icons, several chapters on different figures and what can be learned or gleaned from them as one prepares for justice work. The final section provides a month-long daily office for doing justice, which participants may adopt in their life of prayer and faithful reflection.

Miller's Illustrated, Industrial-Strength Metaphysics by Jim Miller Pdf

The author uses the story of his life as a vehicle to tell what he has learned along the way about metaphysics. It is not a scholarly treatise, but the record of one person's attempt to understand what lies beyond the physical. From another point of view, the book can be seen as a comment on the gods of organized religion, and a project to pose a metaphysical alternative.

I Believe in Miracles by Paula Weidenkopf Welsh Pdf

In May of 2009, my husband was severely injured at the geothermal plant where he worked. He suffered second and third-degree burns over 73 percent of his body after falling into a hole filled with 140-degree brine water. Miracles began happening right before our eyes. He was able to climb out of the hole by himself, run the length of a football field to wash off, and ended up being flown to a trauma hospital where a world-renowned doctor would begin the tedious task of stapling cadaver tissue onto all of his burns. I created a web page on CaringBridge and began journaling as a means of communication with family and friends who lived four or more hours away. The response was overwhelming as you will attest to when you start turning the pages. There is no doubt in my mind that all the prayers and words of comfort played a big part in Mark's healing process. I also believe the Holy Spirit comforted me and gave me the strength I needed to be there for my husband. ***Cover photo taken near the entrance of the Coso Operating Plant.
