Rodin's Art by the late Albert E. Elsen,Rosalyn Frankel Jamison Pdf

The late Albert Elsen was the first American scholar to study seriously the work of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the person most responsible for a revival of interest in the artist as a modern innovator--after years during which the sculpture had been dismissed as so much Victorian bathos. After a fortuitous meeting with the financier, philanthropist, and art collector B. Gerald Cantor, Elsen helped Cantor to build up a major collection of Rodin's work. A large part of this collection, consisting of more than 200 pieces, was donated to the Stanford Museum by Mr. Cantor, who died recently. In size it is surpassed only the by the Mus?e Rodin in Paris and rivaled only by the collection in Philadelphia. In scope the collection is unique in having been carefully selected to present a balanced view of Rodin's work throughout his life. Rodin's Art encompasses a lifetime's thoughts on Rodin's career, surveying the artist's accomplishments through the detailed discussion of each object in the collection. It will begin with essays on the formation of the collection, the reception of Rodin's work, and his casting techniques. The entries that follow are arranged topically and include extensive discussions of Rodin's major projects.

Rodin by Monique Laurent Pdf

When Auguste Rodin died in 1917, there was an extraordinary outburst of sentiment throughout the world, comparable with the death of great statesmen like de Gaulle or Churchill. He had become a national and an international hero. Born in Paris in 1840, in relatively humble circumstances, he achieved greatness through the exercise, over long life, of a prodigious talent. As an exact contemporary of Claude Monet, he inhabited the world of the Impressionists. But he followed a different path, combining his pursuit of the ideals of classical sculpture with an astonishingly sensuous individualism.

Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel by J. Adolf Schmoll gen. Eisenwerth Pdf

"The relationship between Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin was one of the most artistically fruitful and passionate turn-of-the-century love affairs. When they first met in 1883, Rodin was forty-four and Claudel a promising sculptor of twenty. Despite the positive response of critics to her early work, Claudel, however, never experienced fame and success. The tragic circumstances of her life - the last thirty years were spent in a psychiatric hospital - have led to considerable speculation and interest in this enigmatic figure. To some she seemed to offer the classic example of a woman artist who was oppressed and abused by a successful man. This book examines Claudel's family background, her relationship to her parents and brother, and her behavior as documented by friends and family to determine to what extent her innate mental instability led to her eventual breakdown. What were the circumstances surrounding her commitment to an asylum and how did her family and Rodin react to her illness? Further, the author critically examines the relationship between the two artists: to what extent did they influence each other? How did Rodin really treat Claudel? Finally and most importantly, Claudel's oeuvre is investigated in terms of her biography and in relationship to her contemporaries in an attempt to evaluate her work as a sculptor and to understand the personal and artistic crisis she underwent after severing her relationship with Rodin."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Rodin by Claudine Mitchell Pdf

The expression 'the Zola of Sculpture' was coined in the circles of the Royal Academy in the 1880s as a term of abuse. Rodin: 'The Zola of Sculpture' reveals how the appraisal of Rodin in British culture was shaped by controversies around the literary models of Zola and Baudelaire, in a period when negative notions about French culture were being progressively transformed into positive expressions of modern sculpture. Embedded within this collaborative book is the editor's proposition that Rodin came to play an important role in the cultural politics of the Entente Cordiale at a critical juncture of European history. Encompassing new scholarship in several disciplines, drawn from both sides of the Channel, Rodin: 'The Zola of Sculpture' offers the first in-depth account of Rodin's career in Britain in the period 1880-1914 and weaves this historical trajectory into a complex investigation of the interactions between French and British cultures. The authors examine the cultural agencies in which conceptions of Rodin's practice played a defining role, dealing in turn with artists' professional associations, art criticism, private and public collectors and the education of women sculptors.

Delphi Complete Works of Auguste Rodin (Illustrated) by Auguste Rodin Pdf

The founder of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin was a late nineteenth century pioneer, whose work changed the course of the history of art. His greatest achievement was the restoration of the role of ancient sculpture, showing that a modern artist could capture the physical and intellectual force of a subject, while freeing the artistic medium from the repetition of traditional patterns. Rodin’s enduing popularity is often ascribed to his emotion-laden representations of ordinary men and women and his ability to find beauty and pathos. Masterpieces such as ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Thinker’ are widely used outside the fine arts as symbols of human emotion, transcending the sculptor’s medium and helping us to understand the fundamental essence of being a human. Delphi’s Masters of Art Series presents the world’s first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail. Rodin in the United States by Antoinette Le Normand-Romain Pdf

A compelling examination of French sculptor Auguste Rodin from the perspective of his enthusiastic American audience This exhibition catalogue explores the American reception of French artist Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), from 1893, when his first work entered a US museum, to the present. Its trajectory reaches from the collecting frenzy of the early twentieth century--promoted by philanthropist Katherine Seney Simpson and performer Loïe Fuller--to important museum acquisitions of the 1920s and 1930s. From there, it traverses the 1950s, when Rodin's reputation flagged, through to the artist's revival and recognition in the 1980s. Rodin's promoters include a dynamic cast of characters, each of whom played a crucial role in cementing his status. The book traces this story through approximately 50 sculptures and 20 drawings that cover Rodin's most iconic subjects and themes. They demonstrate his dexterity across media--his virtuosity in plaster, terracotta, bronze, and marble--as well as his expressive, colorful drawings, some of them relatively unknown, sparking new appreciation for his work and delight for readers.
