Romantic Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by John Geddie Pdf

Excerpt from Romantic Edinburgh IN bringing out, for the Coronation Year of George V., a new and revised edition of this book, acknow ledgment has to be made to Bailie Macfarlane, Convener of the Museum Committee of the Town Council, for permission to reproduce, in colour or in black-and-white, a selection of the views of Old Edinburgh, in which the Municipal Museum is so rich. Thanks have also to be given to Mr T. L. Usher, of the Park Brewery, for leave to reproduce the water-colour drawing of Edinburgh, in the Opening year of the reign of Queen Victoria, that is to be found at page 212. The growth of the City and the removal of ancient landmarks in the interval since the first edition appeared, have rendered necessary many additions and alterations. Doubtless there are errors that remain uncorrected. It is hoped, however, that the volume provides - brought up to date - a Vaa'e Macaw which the explorer of Edinburgh can take with him on his walks, or profitably peruse at the fireside. Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by Rosaline Masson Pdf

Excerpt from Edinburgh The earliest authentic romance of Edinburgh Castle is that of Malcolm Canmore and Queen Margaret; and the oldest building extant in Edinburgh is Queen Margaret's chapel in the Castle. The well-known story of Queen Margaret, the grand-niece of Edward the Confessor, is that she and her brother Edgar Atheling and her sister Christina all fled from England and William the Conqueror, and were wrecked in the Firth of Forth. The King of Scotland, Malcolm Canmore, was the son of that Duncan whom Macbeth put out of the way - in Scottish history as well as in Shakespeare's play, - and he had fled from the usurper, and had spent his years of exile at the Saxon Court of Edward the Confessor. Lord Montagu's Page by George Payne Rainsford James Pdf

Excerpt from Lord Montagu's Page: An Historical Romance of the Seventeenth Century The Edinburgh Review concludes some comments upon our author with the remark, Our readers will perceive from these general observations that we estimate Mr. James's abilities, as a romance-writer, highly: his works are lively and interesting, and animated by a spirit of sound and healthy morality in feeling, and of natural delineation in character, which, we think, will secure for them a calm popularity which will last beyond the present day. John Galt by Regina Hewitt Pdf

The essays in this volume revalue the work of the Romantic-era Scottish writer John Galt, connecting his methods and goals with Scottish Enlightenment "conjectural" historiography and with later social theorizing. Emphasizing the construction, representation and use of social knowledge, the essays find new meaning in Galt's perceptions of the Atlantic and Mediterranean worlds in which he traveled, his attitudes toward community building and progress, and his innovations in fiction, drama, journalism and biography.

The Springs of Romance in the Literature of Europe by George Wyndham Pdf

Excerpt from The Springs of Romance in the Literature of Europe: An Address Delivered to the Students of the University of Edinburgh, October 1910 It was not easy to choose a theme for an address to Edinburgh University. Your unbounded belief in Rectorial discretion permits a latitude that is almost embarrassing. For guidance I had nothing but a sense of my own limitations and a prospect of the scene that confronts me. These suggested a search over the vast province of learning for some plot, not wholly unexplored by your Rector, that should also be linked with the fame of your ancient city. The world allows, and Scott's monument attests, that, from Edinburgh, and by his genius. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Frolic a Scarborough Romance (Classic Reprint) by Frances Helen Waldy Pdf

Excerpt from Frolic a Scarborough Romance The eve advances to its dying hours, The sunset lights come stealing o'er the flowers, A hush is on the song birds, and the wind Dies with the sun, nor leaves one breath behind. I too shall die, my darling, ere the day Return in light, - ah do not bid me stay, Fain would I spread my wings and soar above To reach sweet Heaven, and my Father's love. For earth has held its weariness and pain Closely, so closely to my fevered brain; And dear and sweet, as thou art Love, to me, Dearer and sweeter will Christ's presence be. Traditions of Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by Robert Chambers Pdf

Excerpt from Traditions of Edinburgh I AM about to do what very few could do without emotion revise a book which I wrote forty-nve years ago. This little xwork came out in the Augustan days of Edinburgh, when (i Jeffrey and Scott, Wilson and the Ettrick Shepherd, Dugald Stewart and Alison, were daily giving the productions of their minds to the public, and while yet Archibald Constable acted as the unquestioned emperor of the publishing world. I was then an insignificant person of the age of twenty; yet, destitute as I was both of means and friends, I formed the hope of writing something which would attract attention. The subject I proposed was one lying readily at hand, the romantic things connected with Old Edinburgh. If, I calculated, a first part or number could be issued, materials for others might be expected to come in, for scores of old inhabitants, even up perhaps to the very oldest, ' would then contribute their reminiscences. The plan met with success. Materials almost unbounded came to me, chiefly from aged professional and mercantile gentlemen, who, usually, at my first introduction to them, started at my youthful appearance, having formed the notion that none but an old person would have thought of writing such a book. A friend gave me a letter to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe, who, I was told, knew the scandal of the time of Charles II. As well as he did the merest gossip of the day, and had much to say regarding the good society of a hundred years ago. Edinburgh by Herbert Maxwell Pdf

Excerpt from Edinburgh: A Historical Study IT was told of the devoted and thoroughly compe tent secretary of a certain Antiquarian Society that, when he retired on a pension earned by his long service, he ceased to show any interest in archaeology. When a friend expressed surprise that he should so completely have abandoned the study which had absorbed the energy of his active years, he replied: Well, I have had more than my share of it, and now I wish to God there were nothing older in the world than a new-laid egg! If, as is not improbable, the reader should find in the following pages more of a dead past than is to his taste, it will be fortunate for the author if impatience finds no sharper expression than by a sen tence, I think, in one of Lord Morley's books, to the effect that he did not in the least want to know what had happened in the past, except as it enabled him to see more clearly through what was happening in the present. So it is with the ancient capital of Scotland. To enter into the Spirit of the place as a Visitor - to love it intelligently as a citizen thereof - some know ledge of its chequered past is essential. Waverley, Or 'Tis Sixty Years Since (Classic Reprint) by Walter Scott Pdf

Excerpt from Waverley, or 'Tis Sixty Years Since I must refer to a ve early period of my life, were I to point out m first achievements as a ta e-telier - but I believe some of my old schoolie loss can still bear witness that I had a distinguished character for that talent, at a time when the applause of m companions was my recompense for the disgraoes and punishments which t e future romance-writer incurred for being idle himself. And keeping others idle, during hours that should have been employed on our tasks. The chief enjoyment of my holidays was to escape with a choun friend, who had the same taste with myself. And alter astely to recite to each other such wild adventures as we were able to devise. We told. Each in turn, interminable tales of knight-errantry and battles and enchantments, which were continued from one day to another, opportunity offered, without our ever thinking of bringing them to a conclusion. As we observed a strict secrecy on the subject of this inter course, it acquired all the character of a concealed pleasure, and we used to select, for the scenes of our indol ence, Ion walks through the solitary and romantic environs of Arthur's eat, Salis ury Crags, Braid Hills, and similar places in the vicinity of Edinburgh and the recollection of those holidays still forms an mi: in the pilgrimage which I have to look back upon. I have on] to add, that my friend? Still lives, a prosperous gentle man, but too mo occupied with graver business, to thank me for indica ting him more plainly as a confidant of my childish mystery.
