Traditions of Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by Robert Chambers Pdf

Excerpt from Traditions of Edinburgh I AM about to do what very few could do without emotion revise a book which I wrote forty-nve years ago. This little xwork came out in the Augustan days of Edinburgh, when (i Jeffrey and Scott, Wilson and the Ettrick Shepherd, Dugald Stewart and Alison, were daily giving the productions of their minds to the public, and while yet Archibald Constable acted as the unquestioned emperor of the publishing world. I was then an insignificant person of the age of twenty; yet, destitute as I was both of means and friends, I formed the hope of writing something which would attract attention. The subject I proposed was one lying readily at hand, the romantic things connected with Old Edinburgh. If, I calculated, a first part or number could be issued, materials for others might be expected to come in, for scores of old inhabitants, even up perhaps to the very oldest, ' would then contribute their reminiscences. The plan met with success. Materials almost unbounded came to me, chiefly from aged professional and mercantile gentlemen, who, usually, at my first introduction to them, started at my youthful appearance, having formed the notion that none but an old person would have thought of writing such a book. A friend gave me a letter to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe, who, I was told, knew the scandal of the time of Charles II. As well as he did the merest gossip of the day, and had much to say regarding the good society of a hundred years ago. The History of the High School of Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by William Steven Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the High School of Edinburgh Of the High School of Edinburgh, this work comprises an historical account, founded on information derived from a careful examination of the Records of the Town-Council, and other authentic Documents. This Seminary, which existed in the beginning of the sixteenth century, was patronised by King James the Sixth, in whose reign it was styled Schola Regia Edinensis; and George the Fourth recognised its national importance by the bestowal of a handsome donation. As the work embraces much that is new respecting the lives, peculiar modes of tuition, and literary labours of the most eminent teachers, as well as brief notices of persons of distinction and rank educated at the High School, it is hoped that it will prove useful to all engaged in the honourable and arduous task of instructing youth, and interesting to a large portion of the public. The changes which have occurred in the Course of Study from the earliest period are embodied in the narrative. But in order to give information more decidedly of a practical character, a detailed account of the system of education at present pursued in the junior classes, prepared by Mr Gunn, one of the Masters, and a similar account of the highest class, furnished by Dr Schmitz, the Rector, occupy a distinct place. The Castle of Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by G. F. Maine Pdf

Excerpt from The Castle of Edinburgh High upon her wind-swept rock, majestic and beautiful in the rose pink of the dawn and the soft colours of the twilight; sparkling like a jewel in the beauty of the sun; grim and sinister in the grey light so characteristic of our northern clime; poignant with the mystery and tragedy of the ages, the Castle of Edinburgh broods over the city. Sorrow and pain have left their scars upon her features; anxiety and care have mellowed her beauty, age has greyed her locks; but her proud imperious eye is as bright as when the invader spilt his blood upon her battlements, and her bearing is that of the Warrior Queen, valiant in battle, patient in reverse, temperate in victory, ever in sympathy with the sufferings of her children, who has come at last to the peace of a new world. What of war has not been her portion through the long ages of strife and turmoil? What tales could she tell of mighty prowess, of glorious defence, of wonderful escape and, alas, of despicable treachery. What famous heads has she sheltered only to fall to the axe of the executioner or the dagger of the assassin. Her halls have echoed to the music of revelry, to laughter and song; but they have resounded also to shouts of murder and cries of treason. Her courtyards and battlements have run red with the blood of Scottish sons who gave their lives for the grey mother. The groans of prisoners and the agonies of the dying have steeled her to bear her cross. Sorrow has been her portion, and only through long ages of trial and tribulation has she come at last to a fuller knowledge of the message of the motto of the capital of Scotland, Nisi Dominus Frustra - Without God, all is in vain. In Praise of Edinburgh, an Anthology in Prose and Verse (Classic Reprint) by Rosaline Orme Masson Pdf

Excerpt from In Praise of Edinburgh, an Anthology in Prose and Verse The extracts gathered in this book include comments on Edinburgh from that of Ptolemy in the second century to that of King George v. in the twentieth. Inevitably there must be very many regrettable omissions. The extracts have been arranged, as far as possible, in the chronological order of their subjects; contemporary accounts thus coming in the chronological order of their writers. This arrangement would seem the most satisfactory to the historical sense, for it tends to present a consecutive story, or set of pictures, of Edinburgh. Just as the Edinburgh that was praised in the sixteenth century is not the same Edinburgh that was praised in the nineteenth century, so the nature of the praise changes with the centuries as does the city. For instance, if we except Gavin Douglas's delicious observations of Nature - not always praise - it is interesting to note how perception of scenic beauty does not creep into the descriptions of Edinburgh until about the middle of the eighteenth century, when the Bishop of Meath, writing to his sister, tells her of the view of the Forth and the country. Pennant, whom Johnson called observant, notices the views also, a few years later. Until that period travellers comment on the strength of the position of the Castle, and are uniform in their admiration of the 'one fair street, ' and the height of the houses in Parliament Close. It may also be noticed that our French visitors are generally eulogistic; but that some of our English guests - as Henry 111.'s daughter in 1255, Sir Anthony Weldon in 1617, Dr. Johnson in the eighteenth century and John Ruskin in the nineteenth, - can only be quoted by considering their remarks to have been inspired by home-sickness or by jealousy, and therefore to be accepted as praise in disguise. Within the chronological barriers, an attempt has been made to present occasional continuity of subject matter, or sharp clash of contrasting opinion. And yet the poor Scots of the Old Town Of Edinburgh, rich only in local knowledge and tradition, are certainly generous in their information and lavish with their good -will, and without the kindly help and friendly sympathy Of many a miserably clad, rough-hand ed, poverty-stricken Solon of the modern British Athens this book could not have been written. The Black Friars of Edinburgh (Classic Reprint) by W. Moir Bryce Pdf

Excerpt from The Black Friars of Edinburgh At Perth, on 11th May 1559, the strident voice of John Knox sounded the knell of the ancient Church of Rome in this country, and within a period of sixteen months thereafter a 'holy, godly Reformation, ' the most complete and thorough in Europe, was established by the Estates of Parliament. Irrespective of the question of dogma, the Church at this date lay singularly open to the attack of the Reformers. Wanton licence prevailed among all ranks of its salaried professors, and there was no native hand strong enough to restrain excesses. The papacy of the day was overwhelmed with its own troubles and griefs, and was not in a position either to strengthen the bonds of discipline, or to afford assistance to its distressed servants. The duties of the parochial clergy thereupon fell to a large extent into the hands of men described by Knox and other contemporary writers as'the friars.' Now, within the folds of the Church there existed a great number of organisations, both lay and clerical, whose members devoted their lives to the furtherance of the sacred cause of Christianity. Robert Louis Stevenson's Edinburgh Days (Classic Reprint) by E. Blantyre Simpson Pdf

Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson's Edinburgh Days We can conjure up the image of the future author at this stage, in a hat bulky with pro tective ear-bows, absurdly chubby of cheek, with his dark eyes alertly noting the things of colour and life within his range, or contemplating other juveniles with placid condescension, as in this wordless state of existence they passed one another by with exchange of infantine smiles. He also studied the world from the windows of his home. The students of botany, hurrying in the May mornings to their lecture among the flowers, might often have seen a small child held up to the window to gaze at the lads, who were almost as early astir as the dust-carts. Excerpt from A History of Edinburgh From the Earliest Period to the Completion of the Half Century 1850: With Brief Notices of Eminent or Remarkable Individuals Among the discoveries of modern days, perhapsthe most wonderful is the Electric Telegraph, and it was indeed a notable event in the history of Edin burgh, and one which would thirty years ago have been as little believed as some of the fabulous stories in the Arabian Nights' Entertainments, that the metropolis of Scotland should be placed in instant communication with the capital of England, nearly four hundred and fifty miles distant, and that by means of an electric wire, by which messages are conveyed with nearly the speed of lightning. This remarkable event took pl ace in the autumn of 1847. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
