This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1875 edition. Excerpt: ... THE PAINTER OF VENICE. A STORY OF THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY. CHAPTER I. "IN THE AGE OF ART." JHE city of Florence, during the palmy days of Cosmo de Medici, was a very Arcady of poets, painters, and musicians. Cosmo was one of the richest and most princely dilettanti of the fifteenth century, whose ardent love of learning, munificent liberality, and splendid administration of the immense power he possessed in Florence, induced his fellow-citizens to honour him with the title of "Pater Patriae;" a designation, however, that hardly proved itself appropriate in after years, since the influence of the Medici certainly derogated with time from the liberty of the Florentine republicans. Cosmo, like all the great men of his romantic age, was doomed to earn his dignity at the cost of severe misfortune; for he had a gruesome rival in Rinaldo Albizzi, then leading governor of Florence; and the popular patron of the belles-lettres and beaux arts fell before the jealousy of the man in authority, at whose instigation he was cited by the Signoria, and exiled as an enemy to the state in the year 1433. But the chief of the House of Medici was too influential and revered a citizen to remain long in banishment; and after the lapse of only twelve months he was recalled by a new parliament, and Albizzi experienced in his turn how capricious are the fancies of small states, and how dangerously changeful the fortunes of great men; for the Florentine republic now turned the flowing tide of its varying wrath upon him, and sent him forth by a mandate of exile, to take refuge with Filippo-Maria, Duke of Milan. So much it has been necessary to recount en parenthbse, concerning the personal history of Cosmo de Medici; but little more remains to be added here on the...

Handbook of the Theosophical Current by Anonim Pdf

Few religious currents have been as influential as the Theosophical. Yet few currents have been so under-researched, and the Brill Handbook of the Theosophical Current thus represents pioneering research. A first section surveys the main people and events involved in the Theosophical Society from its inception to today, and outlines the Theosophical worldview. A second, substantial section covers most significant religions to emerge in the wake of the Theosophical Society - Anthroposophy, the Point Loma community, the I AM religious activity, the Summit Lighthouse Movement, the New Age, theosophical UFO religions, and numerous others. Finally, the interaction of the Theosophical current with contemporary culture - including gender relations, art, popular fiction, historiography, and science - are discussed at length.

The Englishwoman's Review of Social and Industrial Questions by Janet Horowitz Murray,Myra Stark Pdf

The Englishwoman’s Review, which published from 1866 to 1910, participated in and recorded a great change in the range of possibilities open to women. The ideal of the magazine was the idea of the emerging emancipated middle-class woman: economic independence from men, choice of occupation, participation in the male enterprises of commerce and government, access to higher education, admittance to the male professions, particularly medicine, and, of course, the power of suffrage equal to that of men. First published in 1979, this twenty-first volume contains issues from 1888. With an informative introduction by Janet Horowitz Murray and Myra Stark, and an index compiled by Anna Clark, this set is an invaluable resource to those studying nineteenth and early twentieth-century feminism and the women’s movement in Britain.

Red Cactus by Alan Pert Pdf

Here at last, an accurate biography of the amazing Englishwoman, Anna Kingsford (1846-1888). 2nd edition now available. Anna Kingsford accomplished much of lasting value in her life, tragically cut short by consumption. Beautiful, talented and rich, she eloped with a theology student at the age of 21, and married him on the condition that she be free to pursue her own career. She owned a paper in London, then took a medical degree in Paris to aid her promotion of progressive causes. As a mystic of a high order, she received illuminations which formed the basis of her classic Hermeticwork, The Perfect Way. On invitation, she became president of the British Theosophical Society, but fell out with the irascible Madame Blavatsky to form her own Hermetic Society. She will long be remembered for her mystical works, her promotion of vegetarianism and animal welfare, and her courage in exposing cant and hypocrisy in a repressive age. Anna Kingsford's reputation has been seriously maligned in some quarters. Did she kill two Frenchmen by mind power? Was her mind taken over by a black magician? In past lives was she Mary Magdalen, Joan of Arc, and Anne Boleyn? Now, for the first time, these and other disturbing questions are answered.
