Rotational Structure in Molecular Infrared Spectra by Carlo di Lauro Pdf

Recent advances in infrared molecular spectroscopy have resulted in sophisticated theoretical and laboratory methods that are difficult to grasp without a solid understanding of the basic principles and underlying theory of vibration-rotation absorption spectroscopy. Rotational Structure in Molecular Infrared Spectra fills the gap between these recent, complex topics and the most elementary methods in the field of rotational structure in the infrared spectra of gaseous molecules. There is an increasing need for people with the skills and knowledge to interpret vibration-rotation spectra in many scientific disciplines, including applications in atmospheric and planetary research. Consequently, the basic principles of vibration-rotation absorption spectroscopy are addressed for contemporary applications. In addition to covering operational quantum mechanical methods, spherical tensor algebra, and group theoretical methods applied to molecular symmetry, attention is also given to phase conventions and their effects on the values of matrix elements. Designed for researchers and PhD students involved in the interpretation of vibration-rotation spectra, the book intentionally separates basic theoretical arguments (in the appendices), allowing readers who are mainly concerned with applications to skip the principles while at the same time providing a sound theoretical basis for readers who are looking for more foundational information. Reviews basic theory and contemporary methods of vibration rotation absorption spectroscopy, including operational quantum mechanical methods, spherical tensor algebra, and group theoretical methods applied to molecular symmetry Covers sophisticated mathematical topics in simple, easy-to-read language Discusses methods and applications separately from basic theoretical arguments for quick reference

Rotational Spectra and Molecular Structure by James E. Wollrab Pdf

Physical Chemistry, A Series of Monographs: Rotational Spectra and Molecular Structure covers the energy levels and rotational transitions. This book is divided into nine chapters that evaluate the rigid asymmetric top molecules and the nuclear spin statistics for asymmetric tops. Some of the topics covered in the book are the asymmetric rotor functions; rotational transition intensities; classes of molecules; nuclear spin statistics for linear molecules and symmetric tops; and classical appearance of centrifugal and coriolis forces. Other chapters deal with the energy levels and effects of centrifugal distortion, as well as the internuclear distance and moments of inertia. The discussion then shifts to the coriolis coupling effects on rotational constants and the perturbation treatment of vibration-rotational Hamiltonian. The last chapter is devoted to the examination of origin of the quadrupole interaction. The book can provide useful information to chemists, physicists, electrical engineers, students, and researchers.

Vibration-rotational Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics by Du?an Papou?ek Pdf

The book reviews the results of vibration-rotational spectroscopy of molecules obtained recently by combining modern computational methods of quantum chemistry with the new techniques of high-resolution rotational and vibration-rotational spectroscopy. It shows for example that the tunneling vibration-rotational spectroscopy of the van der Waals complexes provides a new look at intermolecular forces while the high precision and sensitivity of the submillimeter-wave and Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy make it possible to study complex rotational spectra of molecules in excited vibrational states. New results of high level ab initio quantum chemical computations of vibrational and rotational energy levels and dipole moment functions of unusual molecules will be discussed together with the recent discovery of clustering of energy levels in asymmetric tops. Group theoretical analysis of floppy molecules, especially the tunneling effects in nonrigid molecules, will also be discussed.

Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure - by Gerhard Herzberg Pdf

TEXT BOOK MOLECULAR SPECTRA and MOLECULAR STRUCTURE I. SPECTRA OF DIATOMIC MOLECULES by GERHARD HERZBERG. Originally published in 1939. PREFACE: Eleven years ago I published a volume entitled Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure I. Diatomic Molecules which was followed in 1945 by a second volume Infrared and Raman Spectra of Polyatomic Molecules. The first volume has been out of print for a number of years but the demand for it seemed to justify a new edition. Although the book has been completely revised and brought up to date, its general plan has remained substantially unchanged. Concerning this plan it seems therefore appropriate to quote from the preface of the first edition I have endeavored to give a presentation which is readable by the beginner in the field and also will be useful to those who do or want to do research work in this field. In order to assist the former, I have frequently made use of small type for those sections that are not necessary for an understanding of the fundamentals. For the benefit of those working in the field, numerous references to original papers have been included. A satisfactory presentation of molecular spectra and molecular structure is nowadays not possible without treating thoroughly, apart from the empirical results, the theoretical background also. Therefore I have included as much of the theory of molecular spectra as is possible without going into the more difficult mathematical details. A large number of diagrams, graphical repre sentations of eigenfunctions and potential curves, as well as energy level dia grams, serve to illustrate and to explain the theory. On the other hand, I have added numerous carefully selected spectrograms of bands and band systems some of which have been taken specially for this purpose in order to give an accurate idea of tho experimental material that forms the basis of the developments. While of course most of the material presented is not new, it seems that the actual procedure followed in analyzing a band spectrum has not previously been given as specifically in a book of this kind. The same holds for the ap plications of band spectra to other parts of physics, to chemistry, and to astro physics given in the last chapter. I hope that both these features will be found useful. In the eleven years since the publication of the first edition the subject Spectra of Diatomic Molecules has developed vigorously even though not as rapidly as in the preceding two decades. Most of the progress made has been consolidation and slow evolution rather than revolution. Exceptions to this statement are the amazing advances made by applying the new tools of molecular beams and microwaves to diatomic molecular problems. Naturally I have incorporated these advances of recent years in the present new edition...

Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy by Norman Colthup Pdf

Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy focuses on the theoretical and experimental aspects of infrared and Raman spectroscopy, with emphasis on detailed group frequency correlations and their vibrational origin. Topics covered include vibrational and rotational spectra, molecular symmetry, methyl and methylene groups, triple bonds and cumulated double bonds, and olefin groups. Aromatic and heteroaromatic rings are also considered, along with carbonyl compounds and molecular vibrations. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with a discussion on the use of Raman and infrared spectroscopy to study the vibrational and rotational frequencies of molecules, paying particular attention to photon energy and degrees of freedom of molecular motion. The quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator and the anharmonic oscillator are described. The next chapter focuses on the experimental techniques and instrumentation needed to measure infrared absorption spectra and Raman spectra. Symmetry is then discussed from the standpoint of the spectroscopist. The following chapters explore the vibrational origin of group frequencies, with an emphasis on mechanical effects; spectra-structure correlations; and the spectra of compounds such as ethers, alcohols, and phenols. The final chapter demonstrates how the frequencies and forms of a nonlinear molecule's normal modes of vibration may be calculated mathematically. This monograph will be a useful resource for spectroscopists and physical scientists.
