Ruling the Spirit by Claire Taylor Jones Pdf

Histories of the German Dominican order have long presented a grand narrative of its origin, fall, and renewal: a Golden Age at the order's founding in the thirteenth century, a decline of Dominican learning and spirituality in the fourteenth, and a vibrant renewal of monastic devotion by Dominican "Observants" in the fifteenth. Dominican nuns are presumed to have moved through a parallel arc, losing their high level of literacy in Latin over the course of the fourteenth century. However, unlike the male Dominican friars, the nuns are thought never to have regained their Latinity, instead channeling their spiritual renewal into mystical experiences and vernacular devotional literature. In Ruling the Spirit, Claire Taylor Jones revises this conventional narrative by arguing for a continuous history of the nuns' liturgical piety. Dominican women did not lose their piety and literacy in the fifteenth century, as is commonly believed, but instead were urged to reframe their devotion around the observance of the Divine Office. Jones grounds her research in the fifteenth-century liturgical library of St. Katherine's in Nuremberg, which was reformed to Observance in 1428 and grew to be one of the most significant convents in Germany, not least for its library. Many of the manuscripts owned by the convent are didactic texts, written by friars for Dominican sisters from the fourteenth through the fifteenth century. With remarkable continuity across genres and centuries, this literature urges the Dominican nuns to resume enclosure in their convents and the strict observance of the Divine Office, and posits ecstatic experience as an incentive for such devotion. Jones thus rereads the "sisterbooks," vernacular narratives of Dominican women, long interpreted as evidence of mystical hysteria, as encouragement for nuns to maintain obedience to liturgical practice. She concludes that Observant friars viewed the Divine Office as the means by which Observant women would define their communities, reform the terms of Observant devotion, and carry the order into the future.

Lessons on Prayer by Witness Lee Pdf

The effectiveness of our prayer depends upon our understanding of the meaning of prayer itself. In Lessons on Prayer Witness Lee first discusses the real meaning of prayer: Prayer is the mutual contact between man and God; prayer is man breathing God, obtaining God, and being obtained by God; and prayer is man cooperating and co-working with God, allowing God to express Himself and His desire through man, and thus accomplish His purpose.

Spirit, Soul, and Body by Andrew Wommack Pdf

Have you ever asked yourself what changed when you were "born again?" You look in the mirror and see the same reflection - your body hasn't changed. You find yourself acting the same and yielding to those same old temptations - that didn't seem to change either. So you wonder, Has anything really changed? The correct answer to that question is foundational for receiving from God. If you lack this basic understanding, you'll forever ask yourself doubt-filled questions like: "How could God love somebody like me?" and "How can I possibly expect to receive anything from the Lord? I don't deserve it, I'm not good enough!" Spirit, Soul, and Body will help you eliminate those and other doubt-filled questions that destroy your faith. If you have trouble receiving from God, this is a must-read!

Holy Spirit and Religious Experience in Christian Literature ca. AD 90-200 by John Eifion Morgan-Wynne Pdf

'Holy Spirit and Religious Experience' seeks to find out how far the centrality of the Holy Spirit in Christian experience during the earliest period of the church was maintained or diminished in the third to the fifth generations (ca. AD 90-200). Three themes are explored. First, the sense of encounter with the divine presence, the numinous, a sense of being caught up into the divine being or being overwhelmed by the One who is beyond us. Secondly, a sense of being illuminated in respect to the truth, given deeper understanding of God's purpose, whether for the individual or the congregation, or guided in decision-making. Thirdly, a sense of ethical empowerment, an awareness of being helped by divine power, assisted in a course of action or development of character, in grappling with temptation, or in the ultimate test of loyalty, martyrdom. This book is arranged geographically, from Syria and Asia Minor in the East to Rome and Gaul in the West, including North Africa and Egypt. Christian authors within these areas are examined chronologically, from the later New Testament writers through the second century to Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian of Carthage, for the evidence they supply. The variegated picture which emerges, it is contended, reflects second-century Christianity.

Spiritual Warfare: Rules of Engagement by Ron Hordyk Pdf

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 2Cor.10:3-4 Today, the church has neglected to teach about the spiritual realm, for fear of being judged archaic. It has denied a key Scriptural truth: that the whole world is under the control of Satan. The church has forgotten that angels were created to serve Gods people. It has also rejected the authority Christians have as ambassadors of Christ. Finally, the church has sacrificed its power to impact the world in order to gain credibility with the world. People have chosen the religion of science. Consequently, if science and Scripture disagree, even people within the church believe science to be the truth. There are three main pillars in science: observable, repeatable, and irrefutable. Any scientific fact must fulfill these pillars to be presumed true. Since the spiritual realm is invisible and not observable, science deems that this realm does not exist. When the spiritual realm manifests itself in an event, science excuses the anomaly to be something they have yet to understand. The Scriptures teach that Christians have overcome sin, Satan, and the world. Through the Holy Spirit, we can discern both the spiritual realms presence and its activities. We are not called to be demon-slayers, but we are called to engage the enemy in order to bring freedom and wholeness to people. The Bible teaches that a war exists between Satans kingdom and Gods kingdom. Every war has Rules of Engagement. The purpose of this book is to identify the spiritual realm, recognize its methods of operation, and ultimately learn the rules that enable us to effectively engage our enemy Satan.
