TRIAL BY FIRE by Himanshu Ghate Pdf

Chief inspector Mushtaq Hussain is posted to a police station in Patparganj - a small hill station nestling in the Western Ghats. While idly leafing through the old case files at the station, he comes across one that had caused a sensation of sorts when he used to be a student-boarder at the Palace School, Patparganj. Though the file is marked 'Closed' many questions remain unanswered Susan, whose memories stir feelings in Mushtaq's heart, had been found, late at night, lying unconscious beside Altaf, their classmate, in a clearing in the bush around the Palace school estate. What was the duo doing there at that time? Susan had been badly mauled and angry scratch marks had appeared all over the skin exposed due to torn clothing. Who had attacked Susan and why? Altaf had his head bludgeoned with blood flowing through a gaping wound near his neck. Who had struck Altaf? Gonu, the mentally challenged school mascot, had stood at the crime scene with a bloodied hockey stick in his hand. Why? How did he get there? Miss Stokes, Gonu's mother and the first one to witness the tableau, had come across Gonu struggling with a person, who, when confronted by Miss Stokes, had fled away into the thicket before she could have a closer look at his face. Who was the fourth person? Mushtaq decides to investigate. He sets the stage for the dramatis personae of that night to come together once again hoping to reignite the passions that could throw up some answers.

The Banjo by Laurent Dubois Pdf

American slaves drew on memories of African musical traditions to construct instruments from carved-out gourds covered with animal skin. Providing a sense of rootedness, solidarity, and consolation, banjo picking became an essential part of black plantation life, and its unmistakable sound remains versatile and enduring today, Laurent Dubois shows.

Long Run to Glory by Stephen Lane Pdf

On the morning of August 5, 1984, four of the greatest marathoners of all time lined up for one of the most important and long-awaited races in history. By then, they had dominated their competition for at least five years, upending a century’s worth of preconceived notions of what marathoners could do. By decade’s end, they had lowered the world record a total of 13 minutes, won 27 major marathon titles, and swept every Olympic and World Championship held in the 1980s. And, in their careers, only once did all four—American Joan Benoit, Norwegians Grete Waitz and Ingrid Kristiansen, and Portugal’s Rosa Mota—square off in the same race: at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, in the first-ever Women’s Olympic Marathon. Such was their talent that Benoit, the world record holder, entered the race as the underdog. She’d had knee surgery in April, and no one, least of all Benoit herself, was certain she could hold up for 26 miles against her three rivals. Waitz, the former world record holder, was the favorite—she had destroyed the field at the 1983 World Championships and had never lost a marathon she had finished. Kristiansen, who had beaten Waitz twice in the summer of 1984 (albeit at shorter distances), was considered the fastest woman in the race: she held world records at 5,000m and 10,000m, and would break Benoit’s marathon record in 1985. Mota had beaten Kristiansen at the 1982 European marathon championships, and was already earning a reputation for raising her level in the biggest races. This is their story, and the story of the first women’s Olympic Marathon.

The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball, 2d ed. by Jonathan Fraser Light Pdf

More than any other sport, baseball has developed its own niche in America’s culture and psyche. Some researchers spend years on detailed statistical analyses of minute parts of the game, while others wax poetic about its players and plays. Many trace the beginnings of the civil rights movement in part to the Major Leagues’ decision to integrate, and the words and phrases of the game (for example, pinch-hitter and out in left field) have become common in our everyday language. From AARON, HENRY onward, this book covers all of what might be called the cultural aspects of baseball (as opposed to the number-rich statistical information so widely available elsewhere). Biographical sketches of all Hall of Fame players, owners, executives and umpires, as well as many of the sportswriters and broadcasters who have won the Spink and Frick awards, join entries for teams, owners, commissioners and league presidents. Advertising, agents, drafts, illegal substances, minor leagues, oldest players, perfect games, retired uniform numbers, superstitions, tripleheaders, and youngest players are among the thousands of entries herein. Most entries open with a topical quote and conclude with a brief bibliography of sources for further research. The whole work is exhaustively indexed and includes 119 photographs.

Unstoppable by Christine Caine Pdf

Ready or not, you are in the run of your life. Whether you run like lightning, or crawl at a snail’s pace, God has chosen you to run the race set before you. His word calls to you: “Let us throw off everything that hinders…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Heb 12:1-2) Not an athlete? Doesn’t matter. Still warming up? The race has already begun. Winded and limping? Keep moving forward. Stumbled or fallen? You have not been disqualified. Or maybe, while running in perfect stride, you’ve hit daunting obstacles. Do not give up! Why? Because this isn’t a one-person race. It’s a relay. You are not alone, but are part of a team assembled by God to achieve his purposes. And God is unstoppable. Fortunately, God has not left you on our own to muddle through the race untrained. His word and his story written into the lives of believers are filled with the wisdom to train you to successfully run the divine relay. Discover how to receive your baton, how to grasp firmly and carry forward all that God entrusts to you—his uncompromising truth, his piercing light, his radical change, his world-transforming love. And be trained in how to release what is no longer yours to carry so that every member of God’s team can press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus. In Unstoppable, best-selling author, global evangelist, and human- trafficking activist, Christine Caine, mesmerizes us with true stories and eternal principles that equip us to run the race we were born to win, receiving and releasing the baton of faith in sync with our team, the body of Christ. God has plucked us out of eternity, positioned us in time, and given us gifts and talents to serve him in this generation to bring the light of Jesus Christ into a broken world. Our race is now. This is our time in history. We’ve been handed the baton of faith and asked to carry that light and dispel the darkness. If we receive and pass on the baton in the divine relay, we will be unstoppable.
