Great Spirit Valley by David Crookes Pdf

Lance Delano, a ruthless millionaire businessman loses everything in the dot.com crash, except for an interest in a small, cash-strapped oil well drilling company owned by Montana wildcatter, Jeff Bishop, who has just discovered a vast new oilfield in the Canadian wilderness. Delano abandons Bishop in the wilds, leaving him to freeze to death in order to steal his company.Black Dog Running, a member of a lost tribe of Blackfoot Indians living high in the Rocky Mountains, finds Bishop unconscious and near death and takes him back to his people where, suffering memory loss, he is inducted into the tribe. Just prior to marrying Black Dog Running's daughter, Bishop regains his memory and escapes from the tribe, bent on tracking down Delano. He is pursued by Black Dog Running who is under orders to kill the white man to prevent the outside world from learning of the existence of the lost tribe and also to bring back absolute proof of Bishop's death.Helen Coffey, a Salt Lake City corporate public relations officer, is fired from her job after publicly criticizing corporate environmental vandalism. She joins the Sierra Club, working as an activist, trying to stop exploitation and degradation of Indian reservations by big business, taking her cause all the way to the U.S. Congress. With Bishop declared legally dead, Delano sells his company and in an underhanded deal buys oil leases in Great Spirit Valley, a sacred Indian site in Montana. It is there that Delano, Bishop, Black Dog Running and Helen Coffey ultimately collide: Bishop seeking retribution, Delano desperate to escape the wrath of the Indian nations, Black Dog Running reluctant to kill the white man who once was his friend and Helen Coffey, determined to halt Big Oil's insatiable greed.

The Soul's Upward Yearning by Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. Pdf

Western culture has been moving away from its Christian roots for several centuries but the turn from Christianity accelerated in the 20th century. At the core of this decline is a loss of a sense of our own transcendence. Scientific materialism has so seriously impacted our belief in human transcendence that many people find it difficult to believe in God and the human soul. This anti-transcendent perspective has not only cast its spell on the natural sciences, psychology, philosophy, and literature, it has also negatively impacted popular culture through the writings of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and many others. The warning signs of this loss of transcendence have been expressed by thinkers as diverse as Carl Jung (psychiatrist), Mircea Eliade (historian of religion), Gabriel Marcel (philosopher), C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. These warnings were validated by a 2004 study in the American Journal of Psychiatry which showed that the absence of religion alone was responsible for a marked increase in suicide rates, sense of meaningless, substance abuse, separation from family, and other psychiatric problems. Thus, the loss of transcendence is negatively affecting not only individuals’ sense of happiness, dignity, ideals, virtues, and destiny, but also the culture. Ironically, the evidence for transcendence is greater today than in any other period in history. The problem is – this evidence has not been compiled and propagated. Fr. Spitzer’s book provides a bright light in the midst of this cultural darkness by presenting both traditional and contemporary evidence for God and a transphysical soul from several major sources. He also shows how human consciousness and intelligence is completely special – and cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence or animal consciousness. We are transcendent beings with souls capable of surviving bodily death – self-reflective beings aware of perfect truth, love, goodness, and beauty. We are beings with an unrestricted capacity to know and create science, law, culture, art, music, literature, and so much more. The evidence reveals that we have the dignity of being created in the very image of God, and if we underestimate it, we will undervalue one another, underlive our lives, and underachieve our destiny. This work is the most comprehensive treatment of human transcendence available today.

Soul Runner by Ian Aman Pdf

Ian Aman decided to run a distance of one thousand miles to not only prove to himself that he could indeed accomplish such an arduous task but also for the goal of raising money to promote awareness for people who struggle with mental health issues. Running an average of twenty-two miles every day, Ian chronicled his journey every step of the way, even including the plague of self-doubt before he even started. He pondered whether he good enough to attempt his course-not because he doubted his physical prowess but because he wondered whether he was worthy of trying something so big, so important. "What if I fail?" he thought. Soul Runner is a day-by-day account of Ian's journey on this trek. Tales of stress, fatigue, and injury are juxtaposed with the love of family and human connection. Intertwining the struggles of pushing himself physically and mentally with accounts of passersby as well as a variety of anecdotes from Ian's own past, Soul Runner encapsulates both the man Ian Aman is and the virtuous ideals and objectives he represents and strives to achieve.

Girls with Razor Hearts by Suzanne Young Pdf

It’s time to fight back in this second novel in a thrilling, subversive near future series from New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Young about a girls-only private high school that is far more than it appears to be. Make me a girl with a razor heart… It’s been weeks since Mena and the other girls of Innovations Academy escaped their elite boarding school. Although traumatized by the violence and experimentations that occurred there, Mena quickly discovers that the outside world can be just as unwelcoming and cruel. With no one else to turn to, the girls only have each other—and the revenge-fueled desire to shut down the corporation that imprisoned them. The girls enroll in Ridgeview Prep, a private school with suspect connections to Innovations, to identify the son of an investor and take down the corporation from the inside. But with pressure from Leandra, who revealed herself to be a double-agent, and Winston Weeks, an academy investor gone rogue, Mena wonders if she and her friends are simply trading one form of control for another. Not to mention the woman who is quite literally invading Mena’s thoughts—a woman with extreme ideas that both frighten and intrigue Mena. And as the girls fight for freedom from their past—and freedom for the girls still at Innovations—they must also face new questions about their existence…and what it means to be girls with razor hearts.

Running to Duncan's Field by W.B. Cannon Pdf

Student and teacher. Owner and pet. Frank Boxer and Duncan Cannon are both teachers: Boxer, an English teacher of seniors at Pines Environmental High School, and Duncan, Frank’s sixteen-year-old dachshund, whose life and fast-approaching departure from this world teach Frank far more than he ever expected. This is the poignant and yet intriguing story of a dog, a teacher, and an oppressive education system that keeps them both fighting for love, for life—and for each other, emotionally, spiritually, and in every other way in which dogs and humans connect. Duncan and Frank’s journey, both through the natural parks that beckon them, and through the re-creation of the most important nation on earth, the Imagine Nation, will pull you in and tug at your heartstrings, long after you have turned the final page. Call this an “educational love story,” if love means never having to say, “Sit down!” or “Play dead!” So, first, take your own dog for a long walk, and then settle in with Running to Duncan’s Field to experience the warmth, love, and strength of the bond between a man and his beloved dog.

Dyed Souls by Gary Santorella Pdf

Dyed Souls takes on the human cost of destructive behaviour, in both a Darwinian and Philosophical context. It symbolises the growing ethical ambiguity of current American culture and examines the notion of identity in a civilisation lacking in substantive culture. Set in the 1980’s, Dyed Souls follows the life of 13-year-old Charlie; an intelligent, troubled teen, taken from his grandparents by his drug addicted mother, only to end up at Hawthorne Residential Treatment Village. There he ponders Darwin, Socrates, and Plato, and unexpectedly falls in love with a girl named Margo. When she breaks his heart, Charlie runs away, beginning a new journey that will leave him shattered before he finally makes it to Virginia. Back with his grandparents, the return of his mother forces him to learn a bitter truth that changes his life forever. Dyed Souls is more a work of philosophy than psychology, examining an America where the notion of living an ethical life has become increasingly vague, superficial, and distorted, and its implications for a species capable of both great cruelty and great compassion. It is a thought-provoking, gritty novel, highlighting how blatant self-interest and prurient self-gratification has replaced the pursuit of wisdom and reason. It will appeal to fans of literary fiction and philosophical literature. A coming-of-age novel, it is suitable for both young adult and adult readers.
