Renewable Energy Sources for Sustainable Development by Narendra Singh Rathore,N. L. Panwar Pdf

There is perfect relationship between energy, ecology and environment. If a proper balance is maintained among these three aspects than sustainable development for the welfare of human beings is obtained. This book has been written with a view to draw attention for integration of renewable energy in all sectors for sustainable development. The aim of this book is to examine the range of views related to renewable energy sources for sustainable and their implications. The authors have simplified and clarified renewable energy technologies and new theories for a sustainable development. Sustainable development has been characterized by an emphasis on environmental issues and its inter-relationship with renewable energy sources. In present context there is a need to develop an approach to structure the subject which hinders the development of knowledge in a systematic way. The built environment contributes significantly to the society and thus development in holistic manner. Integration of renewable energy sources is one of the major factors in determining whether a community is sustainable in the longer term or not. In this book, emphasis has been made on various aspects of energy planning such as energy assessment, energy integration, energy forecasting, energy modeling, computer modeling and techno-economic analysis of different conventional as well as non-conventional renewable energy sources. Much of the information presented in this book is basically to acquire an understanding of the integrated energy planning, its design, development, implementation, monitoring and feedback evaluation. This book will be useful for those involved in energy activities and planning.

Energy Services for Sustainable Development in Rural Areas in Asia and the Pacific by United Nations. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Pdf

It is predicted that over the next two decades, sustained economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region will require energy services in an order of magnitude much larger than today's to meet the energy needs of industrialisation and improved living standards. However, the situation in many rural areas is critically different as local demands for energy often outstrip availability. It is estimated that more than a billion people in rural areas of the Asia-Pacific region lack access to modern energy services, leading to a dependence on non-commercial energy supplies to meet basic needs. Energy is essential for domestic purposes, such as cooking, heating and lighting, as well as for agricultural and rural industry purposes. This means that the objectives of many of the Millennium Development Goals will not be met unless rapid progress is made in extending efficient and affordable energy services to the poor in support of development activities. This publication is largely based on materials and papers presented at the 2004 UNESCAP Expert Group Meeting on Energy Services for Sustainable Development in Rural Areas. However, it also touches on how enhancing eco-efficiency can be a strategy to address the growing pressure on environmental sustainability resulting from the region's rapid economic growth.

Evaluating Climate Change Action for Sustainable Development by Juha I. Uitto,Jyotsna Puri,Rob D. van den Berg Pdf

This book is open access under a Creative Commons license. This authoritative book presents the ever progressing state of the art in evaluating climate change strategies and action. It builds upon a selection of relevant and practical papers and presentations given at the 2nd International Conference on Evaluating Climate Change and Development held in Washington DC in 2014 and includes perspectives from independent evaluations of the major international organisations supporting climate action in developing countries, such as the Global Environment Facility. The first section of the book sets the stage and provides an overview of independent evaluations, carried out by multilateral development banks and development organisations. Important topics include how policies and organisations aim to achieve impact and how this is measured, whether climate change is mainstreamed into other development programs, and whether operations are meeting the urgency of climate change challenges. The following sections focus on evaluation of climate change projects and policies as they link to development, from the perspective of international organisations, NGO’s, multilateral and bilateral aid agencies, and academia. The authors share methodologies or approaches used to better understand problems and assess interventions, strategies and policies. They also share challenges encountered, what was done to solve these and lessons learned from evaluations. Collectively, the authors illustrate the importance of evaluation in providing evidence to guide policy change to informed decision-making.

Rural Energy Services by Teresa Anderson Pdf

Rural Energy Services addresses the policy, market and sustainability aspects of defining and selecting technologies that will meet the demands for energy services by rural villages in a sustainable and reliable way. It offers a participative approach to the supply of energy services with a clear emphasis on the need for energy services, putting needs rather than technology first, and advocating that rural people, above all, know what they need and what will work for them. The handbook contains a full survey of energy resources and technologies and covers, in detail, the issues surrounding the decision-making processes involved, the implementation of energy schemes and an exploration of the policy, market and sustainability issues which are vital to the success of a scheme. The last section contains real case studies, covering projects which meet the energy service needs of rural people across the world today. The book was written as a resource for a series of workshops commissioned by the British Council and the UK Department for International Development, and provided the basis for workshops in countries such as Uganda, Brazil and India. Governmental and non-governmental energy strategists, donors, international and national development agencies, academics and financial institutions with responsibility for investment strategy will find this practical handbook highly valuable in their work.

Renewable energy for agri-food systems: Towards the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement by International Renewable Energy Agency,Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

In 2021, the United Nations Secretary-General will convene the Food Systems Summit to advance dialogue and action towards transforming the way the world produces, consumes and thinks about food guided by the overarching vision of a fairer, more sustainable world. The Secretary-General will also convene the High-Level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE) to promote the implementation of the energy-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Given the inextricable linkages between the energy and agriculture sectors, integrating the nexus perspective within the FSS and the HLDE is crucial to formulate a joint vision of actions to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. In this context, IRENA and FAO have decided to jointly develop a report on the role of renewable energy used in food chain to advance energy and food security as well as climate action towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. While energy has a key enabling role in food system transformation and innovation in agriculture, its current use is unsustainable because of the high dependence on fossil fuels and frequent access to energy in developing countries. The challenge is to disconnect fossil fuel use from food system transformation without hampering food security. The use of renewable energy in food systems offers vast opportunities to address this challenge and help food systems meet their energy needs while advancing rural development while contributing to rural development and climate action.

Integrated Renewable Energy for Rural Communities by Nasir El Bassam,Preben Maegaard Pdf

More than two billion people worldwide have currently no access to grid electricity or other efficient energy supply. This is one third of humanity and the majority live in rural areas. The productivity and health of these people are diminished by reliance on traditional fuels and technologies, with women and children suffering most. Energy is the key element to empower people and ensure water, food and fodder supply as well as rural development. Therefore access to energy should be treated as the fundamental right to everybody. Renewable energy has the potential to bring power, not only in the literal sense, to communities by transforming their prospects. This book offers options that meet the needs of people and communities for energy and engage them in identifying and planning their own provision. It describes updated renewable energy technologies and offers strategies and guidelines for the planning and implementation of sustainable energy supply for individuals and communities.

Energy issues pose a challenge for efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development in that its use is necessary for economic and social development, yet it is also a major cause of environmental degradation, especially atmospheric pollution. Despite the growth in commercial energy use, two billion people remain without access to modern energy sources, and improving this situation is crucial to realising the Millennium Declaration goal of halving the number of people living in poverty by 2015. This publication contains a number of case studies to illustrate best practice and lessons learned regarding sustainable energy use, including: energy market reform, energy efficiency, conventional and renewable energy technologies.
