Sacred Britannia by Miranda Aldhouse-green Pdf

A compelling new account of religion in Roman Britain, weaving together the latest archaeological research and a new analysis of ancient literature to illuminate parallels between past and present Two thousand years ago, the Romans sought to absorb into their empire what they regarded as a remote, almost mythical island on the very edge of the known world—Britain. The expeditions of Julius Caesar and the Claudian invasion of 43 CE, up to the traditional end of Roman Britain in the fifth century CE, brought fundamental and lasting changes to the island. Not least among these was a pantheon of new classical deities and religious systems, along with a clutch of exotic eastern cults, including Christianity. But what homegrown deities, cults, and cosmologies did the Romans encounter in Britain, and how did the British react to the changes? Under Roman rule, the old gods and their adherents were challenged, adopted, adapted, absorbed, and reconfigured. Miranda Aldhouse- Green balances literary, archaeological, and iconographic evidence (and scrutinizes the shortcomings of each) to illuminate the complexity of religion and belief in Roman Britain. She examines the two-way traffic of cultural exchange and the interplay between imported and indigenous factions to reveal how this period on the cusp between prehistory and history knew many of the same tensions, ideologies, and issues of identity still relevant today.

Britannia Antiquissima by John Jones Thomas Pdf

Excerpt from Britannia Antiquissima: Or, a Key to the Philology of History, (Sacred and Profane) My dear Caraddaeg, Many of your friends, who attended the banquet held at the Prince of Wales Hotel, in celebration of the Anniversary of Sant Ddewi, or St. David's Day, (1st March, 1800;, have expressed a wish that you should publish your interesting essays on the Language and Early History of the Cimmerians. I think the publication of a work upon the many curious and imperfectly understood subjects treated of in the papers, portions of which you read on the above-named and subsequent occasions, would be welcomed especially by your countrymen, and, I may add, by the public generally. It is believed, from the ability evinced therein, that, were you to apply your linqual talent and classical learning to the task of analysing those questions thoroughly, we should have access to more reliable data tlian are at present available, and a clearer light may be thrown upon the philological, ethnological, as well as the political history of the Cimmerians, and of their descendants, the Cyrnry or Ancient Britons, the primitive and heroic inhabitants of Ynys Prydain, or the Hyperborean Isles of the West. There are many reasons which should induce you to attempt to strike out a new path through this tetra incognita of history, and, as yet, comparatively unexplored field of Cambric literature. It is the bounden duty of some one who claims kindred with the Camry to grapple earnestly and manfully with the subject, and who is not only conversant with the Crimean, but having, also, an acquaintance with the idiomatic structure of the other learned languages of antiquity. Staging Pain, 1580-1800 by James Robert Allard,Mathew R. Martin Pdf

This collection foregrounds two crucial moments in the histories of pain, trauma, and their staging in British Theater: the establishment of secular and professional theater in London in the 1580s, and the growing dissatisfaction with theatrical modes of public punishment by 1800. Whether focused on individual plays or broad concerns, these essays offer a new and important contribution to the increasingly interrelated histories of pain, the body, and the theater.

Silures by Ray Howell Pdf

'There are huge gaps in our understanding of the lives of the Silures ... Despite what is in many instances a glaring lack of evidence, I've increasingly become convinced that trying to tease out what we can about the social structure of these people offers one of our best avenues to understanding them better.' Silures explores exciting new discoveries and changing interpretations to give an up-to-date analysis of the Iron Age peoples of south-east Wales. From 'the study of stuff', new evidence of trade and commerce and archaeological discoveries, to the suggestion of a new research agenda and a consideration of Silurian resonances in modern Wales, Ray Howell's insights are based on personal observations and his own research activities, including excavations in the Silurian region.

The Adventures of Germanus the Gaul by David Baker Pdf

It is 429 AD and the Roman Empire is falling apart. When Germanus of Gaul is summoned to Rome to have an audience with the Pontifex Maximus, the Pope pleads with him to travel to Britannia, become Archbishop, and overthrow the Vortigern, the evil mastermind who plans to conquer Rome and the Empire. When Germanus finally agrees, he has no idea what lies ahead. After he arrives home, he is horrified to find his wife murdered and his son, Patricius, missing. When a mysterious red-haired Celtic queen arrives at the funeral celebrations, she entices Germanus to take her with him back to the island, along with Lupus, his adopted son. While in Britannia, Germanus becomes torn between the different factions that are battling to impose their beliefs and dominate both island and Empire. As he fights with Britons and Celts and against Saxons and the Vortigern’s crack troops, he finds a new love and a long-lost lover, comes face-to-face with his mortality, and encounters human sacrifice. Now he must decide what kind of man he is: pagan or Christian; Roman or British; general or bishop; emperor or pope. How he decides will not only seal his fate, but also that of an entire continent. In this exciting saga, a Roman general is led on an incredible journey through battles and human sacrifice to a personal choice with the power to transform history.

Madam Britannia by Emma Major Pdf
