An Effective Strategy for Safe Design in Engineering and Construction by David England,Andy Painting Pdf

AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY FOR SAFE DESIGN IN ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION Practically and efficiently implement the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations in any project In An Effective Strategy for Safe Design, safety and risk professionals David England and Dr Andy Painting provide a comprehensive exploration of the design process, from initial idea to the validation of the product in service, from a product and project safety perspective. In that context, the authors show how the appropriate implementation of the requirements of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 can not only improve health and safety on a project but can also improve the project’s output as well as offering savings in both capital and operational expenditure. Readers will discover how the seemingly complex matters of regulation and risk management can be practically applied to projects via examples, illustrations, and real-world references. They will find out how safety regulation, standards, and initiatives all converge on the same goal—the safest output from any given project. The book achieves three primary goals: To improve the understanding and implementation of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 To reduce errors during the design process via the effective implementation of design management strategy To embed the concept of safety in design Perfect for designers, design managers and supervisors, project managers, surveyors, and insurers, An Effective Strategy for Safe Design is also an invaluable addition to the libraries of principal designers, specifiers, and building control officers.

Design for Secure Residential Environments by Steve Crouch,Henry Shaftoe,Roy Fleming Pdf

There is currently a great deal of interest in crime prevention and how it can be reduced through better design. Design for a Secure Residential Environment provides the framework on which the risk of crime can be reduced through sensible design of the vulnerable parts of houses, community buildings and small commercial premises and the environment immediately surrounding the buildings. This book looks at how buildings should be assessed for security measures. It then looks at the design of external and communal areas, how lighting can improve security and then covers methods of making doors and windows secure. It describes various methods of electronic security and concludes with a chapter on how to plan and implement suitable security measures.

Safe Cities by Gerda R. Wekerle,Carolyn Whitzman Pdf

Ordinary people are natural experts on safety in their own communities. The key to creating a city where people feel safe is to give citizens input into developing safer environments for themselves. This book offers a set of easy-to-follow guidelines - well illustrated with photos - that can be used to improve urban safety. It also includes success stories on the ways that ordinary people, working in partnership with local governments and agencies have taken the initiative to fight back against violent crime in public housing, transit, parks and open places, underground parking, schools, houses and neighbourhoods.

Design Against Crime by Caroline L. Davey,Andrew B. Wootton Pdf

Design Against Crime will aid the design profession to meet the challenges presented by the competing needs and complex systems around crime and security. It proposes that designers should use their creative talents to develop innovative solutions to security problems that contribute to the ongoing fight against crime. The authors first explain the design against crime approach to security and security. They go on to provide practical advice on addressing crime and insecurity within the design process and offer practical examples of design being applied to security and safety. They also examine crime victimisation from a global perspective, highlighting the benefits worldwide of reducing opportunities for crime, including issues of national security, such as terrorism and natural disasters. A design-led, human-centred approach provides a way forward that is both aspirational and practical. The book is aimed primarily at design professionals, educators and students interested in safety and security, from all design disciplines, including product design, architecture, service design and communication design. The book should also be read by crime prevention experts, planners, local authorities, managers of urban environments and policymakers.

ISC Security Design Criteria for New Federal Office Buildings and Major Modernization Projects by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment,Committee to Review the Security Design Criteria of the Interagency Security Committee Pdf

In November 1999, GSA and the U.S. Department of State convened a symposium to discuss the apparently conflicting objectives of security from terrorist attack and the design of public buildings in an open society. The symposium sponsors rejected the notion of rigid, prescriptive design approaches. The symposium concluded with a challenge to the design and security professions to craft aesthetically appealing architectural solutions that achieve balanced, performance-based approaches to both openness and security. In response to a request from the Office of the Chief Architect of the Public Buildings Service, the National Research Council (NRC) assembled a panel of independent experts, the Committee to Review the Security Design Criteria of the Interagency Security Committee. This committee was tasked to evaluate the ISC Security Design Criteria to determine whether particular provisions might be too prescriptive to allow a design professional "reasonable flexibility" in achieving desired security and physical protection objectives.

Uses of Risk Analysis to Achieve Balanced Safety in Building Design and Operations by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems,Committee on Risk Appraisal in the Development of Facilities Design Criteria Pdf

This volume considers engineering risk analysis applications to the field of building safety. Building codes and design criteria used by architects and engineersâ€"standards of good practice defined by industry consensusâ€"have made great strides in bringing the dangers of facilities under control, but the range of hazards (e.g., fire, indoor air pollutants, electrical malfunctions) is broad. Risk analysis offers improved overall safety of new and existing facilities without imposing unacceptable costs. Broad application of risk analysis will help facility professionals, policymakers, and facility users and owners to understand the risks, to determine what levels of risk are socially and economically tolerable, and to manage risk more effectively.
