Thank You, St. Jude by Robert A. Orsi Pdf

St. Jude, patron saint of hopeless causes, is the most popular saint of the American Catholic laity, particularly among women. This fascinating book describes how the cult of St. Jude originated in 1929, traces the rise in Jude's popularity over the next decades, and investigates the circumstances that led so many Catholic women to feel hopeless and to turn to St. Jude for help. Robert A. Orsi tells us that the women who were drawn to St. Jude--daughters and granddaughters of immigrants from southern and eastern Europe and Ireland--were the first generations of Catholic women to make lives for themselves outside of their ethnic enclaves. Orsi explores the ambitions and dilemmas of these women as they dealt with the pressures of the Depression and the Second World War, made modern marriages for themselves, entered the workplace, took care of relatives in their old neighborhoods, and raised children in circumstances very different from those of their mothers and grandmothers. Drawing on testimonies written in the periodicals devoted to St. Jude and on interviews with women who felt their lives were changed by St. Jude's intervention, Orsi shows how devotion to St. Jude enabled these women to negotiate their way amid the conflicting expectations of their two cultures--American and Catholic.

The Story Behind the Mail by M. J. Washington Pdf

Sweet Mother of Christ, Hallelujah! Seems like an avalanche has rolled up to my door. The mailbox was stuffed with letters from several different organizations and a couple of catalogs, and being a Tuesday, there was also a wad of junk mail. Remembering the thick manila envelope, IaEUR(tm)d received from the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) in mid-January with an assortment of giftsaEUR"a nice tablet-size calculator, all-occasion cards, address labels, a couple of notepads, a calendar, even a gift-bag. My conscience just wouldnaEUR(tm)t let me rest after receiving all these cool little gifts. I just had to send a donation to help with postage and handling. I think thataEUR(tm)s what caused the avalanche of mail that landed at my door. Deciding right then to keep a count of all incoming mail, I began to write down the names and contents of each envelope, thinking it couldnaEUR(tm)t possibly be too many more after this shipment. Boy was I ever wrong. I started receiving cards of all kind, prayer booklets, prayer relics, rosaries, crucifixes, and medals. Besides the letters, the phone calls started, so I started listing them too. Within a couple of weeks, I had accumulated several pages of organizations requesting help either by phone or postal service. And the brain being the peculiar organ that it isaEUR"my brain anywayaEUR"it gets restless at times for more activity. Religions of the United States in Practice by Colleen McDannell Pdf

Religions of the United States in Practice is a rich anthology of primary sources with accompanying essays that examines religious behavior in America. From praying in an early American synagogue to performing Mormon healing rituals to debating cremation, Volume 1 explores faith through action from Colonial times through the nineteenth century. The documents and essays consider the religious practices of average people--praying, singing, healing, teaching, imagining, and persuading. Some documents are formal liturgies while other texts describe more spontaneous religious actions. Because religious practices also take place in the imagination, dreams, visions, and fictional accounts are also included. Accompanying each primary document is an essay that sets the religious practice in its historical and theological context--making this volume ideal for classroom use and accessible to any reader. The introductory essays explain the various meanings of religious practices as lived out in churches and synagogues, in parlors and fields, beside rivers, on lecture platforms, and in the streets. Religions of the United States in Practice offers a sampling of religious perspectives in order to approximate the living texture of popular religious thought and practice in the United States. The history of religion in America is more than the story of institutions and famous people. This anthology presents a more nuanced story composed of the everyday actions and thoughts of lay men and women.

FABULOUS NEW ORLEANS by Lyle Saxon Pdf

This classic reprint evokes a city steeped in the traditions and idiosyncrasies of three cultures--French, Spanish, and American. Known widely as one of Louisiana's great writers, Lyle Saxon documented many of the quirks and mysteries of New Orleans. His narratives include a vivid picture of Mardi Gras as seen through the eyes of a young boy, a brief history of the city, and accounts of strange and remarkable events, including the great Mississippi flood of 1927, the year of the great plague, and a voodoo cult ceremony. By any standards, New Orleans is a unique city, and Saxon depicts it unadorned, with all its flaws and glories.
