Samoan Art and Artists by Sean Mallon Pdf

"Samoan Art and Artists is a wide-ranging survey of both the traditional and contemporary arts of Samoa. The author has drawn on an extensive research base to present a contemporary and accessible picture of a vibrant culture. The book has a broad sweep, covering all facets of the Samoan arts, including canoe and house building, siapo (tapa) weaving, tattooing, oratory, adornment, all forms of performance art, the visual arts, and literature. An important feature of the book is the inclusion of profiles of living practitioners, both from Samoa and the large Samoan communities in other Pacific countries."--Publisher description.

Tatau by Jean Tekura Mason Pdf

"Jean Tekura Mason's poetry reflects her life as a person living in two worlds - Polynesian and European. Some of her poems are reflective. Others are glib (and deliberately so). There is humour and there is passion - of love and hate, pagan faiths and Christian beliefs, ancestors and dancers, customs and politics, migrants and immigrants, and Pacific flora and fauna - all have stimulated Ms Mason to put pen to paper. At times incisive and descriptive, and at others deeply moging, this book is a collection of poems which is both retrospective perceptive"--Back cover

Tatau by Sean Mallon,Sébastien Galliot Pdf

Tatau is a beautifully designed and richly illustrated retelling of the unique and powerful history of Sāmoan tattooing, from 3,000 years ago to modern practices. The Sāmoan Islands are virtually unique in that tattooing has been continuously practiced with indigenous techniques: the full male tattoo, the pe‘a, has evolved in subtle ways in its design since the nineteenth century, but remains as elaborate, meaningful, and powerful as it ever was. This cultural history is the first publication to examine Sāmoan tatau from its earliest beginnings. Through a chronology rich with people, encounters, and events it describes how Sāmoan tattooing has been shaped by local and external forces of change over many centuries. It argues that Sāmoan tatau has a long history of relevance both within and beyond Sāmoa, and a more complicated history than is currently presented in the literature. It is richly illustrated with historical images of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Sāmoan tattooing, contemporary tattooing, diagrams of tattoo designs and motifs, and with supplementary photographs such as posters, ephemera, film stills, and artefacts.

Pasifika Styles by Rosanna Raymond,Amiria Manutahi Salmond Pdf

"In May 2006 some fifteen artists from New Zealand took over the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge (UK) as part of Pasifika Styles, a groundbreaking experiment in the display of Pacific Art. Installing their works in cases next to taonga or treasures collected on the voyages of Cook and Vancouver, the artists flung open the stores of the museum to bring more of the museum's unparalleled Oceanic collections to light. At the opening of the exhibition, the song of ancient instruments played by contemporary musicians called historic artefacts to life, heralding a new era of collaborative curatorship in ethnographic museums. Over the next two years, visiting artists continued to bring vitality to the collections, offering workshops, seminars, public activities and a festival of performing arts. This book describes Pasifika Styles, from the perspectives of artists, museum professionals and scholars involved in this pioneering project, placing it in the context of current debates about museums, cultural property and art"--Back cover."In May 2006 some fifteen artists from New Zealand took over the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge (UK) as part of Pasifika Styles, an experiment in the display of contemporary Pacific art. Tatau by Mark Adams,Nicholas Thomas Pdf

Mark Adams' renowned images document a great Polynesian art tradition. Samoan tattooing has flourished among Samoan migrants in New Zealand, stimulated major New Zealand artists, and inspired tattoo artists and communities worldwide. Through Adams' photography, Tatau tells the story of Sulu'ape Paulo II, the pre-eminent figure of modern Samoan tattooing. Paulo was a brilliantly innovative and often controversial man, who saw tatau as an art of international importance, and who was killed tragically in 1999. Tatau documents his practice, and that of other tufuga ta tatau (tattoo artists), in the contexts of Polynesian tattooing, Samoan migrant communities and New Zealand art. Tatau presents 100 full-colour plates of Adams' powerful and moving images. Documentary by nature, they also ask tough questions of this scene and its history. Accompanying the photographs are two essays and two interviews: Sean Mallon writes on the tufuga, Peter Brunt writes on the photographer, and in interviews with Sean Mallon and Nicholas Thomas, Sulu'ape Paulo II and Mark Adams respectively articulate their own understandings of their practices.

Arts in the Margins of World Encounters by Willemijn de Jong,Eriko Aoki,John Clammer Pdf

'Arts in the Margins of World Encounters' presents original contributions that deal with artworks of differently marginalized people—such as ethnic minorities, refugees, immigrants, disabled people, and descendants of slaves—, a wide variety of art forms—like clay figures, textile, paintings, poems, museum exhibits and theatre performances—, and original data based on committed, long-term fieldwork and/or archival research in Brazil, Martinique, Rwanda, India, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The volume develops theoretical approaches inspired by innovative theorists and is based on currently debated analytical categories including the ethnographic turn in contemporary art, polycentric aesthetics, and aesthetic cannibalization, among others. This collection also incorporates fascinating and intriguing contemporary cases, but with solid theoretical arguments and grounds. 'Arts in the Margins of World Encounters' will appeal to students at all levels, scholars, and practitioners in arts, aesthetics, anthropology, social inequality, and discrimination, as well as researchers in other fields, including post-colonialism and cultural organizations.

The Pacific Arts of Polynesia and Micronesia by Adrienne L. Kaeppler Pdf

The Pacific Ocean covers one-third of the earth's surface. Comprising thousands of islands and hundreds of cultural groups, Polynesia and Micronesia cover a large part of this vast ocean, from the dramatic mountains of Hawaii to the small, flat coral islands of Kiribati. Including both traditional and contemporary arts, this book introduces the rich artistic traditions of these two regions, traditions that have had a considerable impact on western art in the twentieth century through the influence of artists such as Gauguin. Instead of looking at Polynesia and Micronesia separately, the book focuses on the artistic types, styles, and concepts that they share, placing each in its wider cultural context. From the textiles of Tonga to the canoes of Tahiti, Adrienne Kaeppler looks at religious and sacred rituals and objects, carving, architecture, tattooing, personal ornaments, basket-making, clothing, textiles, fashion, the oral arts, dance, music and musical instruments - even canoe-construction - to provide the ultimate introduction to the rich and vibrant artistic cultures of the Polynesian and Micronesian islands.
