The Journals of Captain James Cook on his Voyages of Discovery by J.C. Beaglehole Pdf

Captain James Cook’s first two voyages of exploration, in 1768-71 and 1772-75, had drawn the modern map of the South Pacific Ocean and had opened the door on the discovery of Antarctica. These expeditions were the subject of Volumes I and II of Dr J.C. Beaglehole’s edition of Cook’s Journals. The third voyage, on which Cook sailed in 1776, was directed to the Northern Hemisphere. Its objective was the discovery of ’a Northern Passage by sea from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean’ - the North-west Passage, sought since the 16th century, which would have transformed the pattern of world trade. The search was to take Cook into high latitudes where, as in the Antarctic, his skill in ice navigation was tested. Sailing north from Tahiti in 1778, Cook made the first recorded discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. On March 7 he sighted the Oregon coast in 44° N. The remarkable voyage which he made northward along the Canadian and Alaskan coasts and through Bering Strait to his farthest north in 70° nearly disproved the existence of a navigable passage towards the Atlantic and produced charts of impressive accuracy. Returning to Hawaii to refit, Cook met his death in a clash with the natives as tragic as it seems unnecessary. Dr Beaglehole discusses, with sympathy and insight, the tensions which led Cook, by then a tired man, into miscalculations alien to his own nature and habits. The volume and vitality of the records, both textual and graphic, for this voyage surpass those even for Cook’s second voyage. The surgeons William Anderson and David Samwell, both admirable observers, left journals which are also here printed in full for the first time. The documentation is completed, as in the previous volumes, by appendixes of documents and correspondence and by reproductions of original drawings and paintings mainly by John Webber, the artist of the expedition. In Dr Beaglehole’s words, ’no one can study attentively the records of Cook’s third, and last, v

Watching TV with a Linguist by Kristy Beers Fägersten Pdf

In Watching TV with a Linguist, Fägersten challenges the conventional view of television as lowbrow entertainment devoid of intellectual activity. Rather, she champions the use of fictional television to learn about linguistics and at the same time promotes enriched television viewing experiences by explaining the role of language in creating humor, conveying drama, and developing identifiable characters. The essays gathered in this volume explore specific areas of linguistics, providing a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to the study of language. Through programs such as Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Sherlock, and The Wire, contributors deftly illustrate key linguistic concepts and terminology using snippets of familiar dialogue and examples of subtle narration. In addition, contributors aim to raise linguistic awareness among readers by identifying linguistics in action, encouraging readers to recognize additional examples of concepts on their own. To this end, each chapter provides suggestions for viewing other television series or specific episodes, where further examples of the linguistic concepts in focus can be found. Invaluable as a resource in linguistics and communication courses, Watching TV with a Linguist is the first book to use the familiar and compelling medium of television to engage students with the science of language.

The Secret Island and Other Adventure Novels - Complete Series by Enid Blyton Pdf

The Secret Series is a collection of exciting action-adventure classics that relate trilling adventures of Arnold children, older Peggy and younger twin siblings Mike and Nora, who live with a harsh aunt and uncle after their parents are thought to have been killed in a plane crash. "The Secret Island" – Aided by Jack, an orphan they have befriended, the Arnold children run away to an island on a nearby lake, and together they make a new home constructed with the branches of a willow tree. "The Secret of Spiggy Hole" – The Arnold children discover that their parents are alive and reunite with them. The family goes on a holiday at the rugged Cornish coast with a family friend, Miss Dimity. Children get drawn into a kidnapping case as they discover a boy named Paul, Prince of Baronia, being held prisoner in a castle tower nearby. "The Secret Mountain" – Captain and Mrs. Arnold are flying off in their plane, the White Swallow, and apparently have crash-landed in a remote part of Africa. The Arnold children, home from school and in the care of a family friend, Miss Dimity, team up with their friend, Prince Paul of Baronia, and go flying off in his royal plane to Africa to rescue their parents. "The Secret of Killimooin" – Prince Paul invites the Arnold's to his palace in Baronia for the holidays; but it is so hot there in the roasting summer that the entire royal household adjourns to their castle up in the mountains. Bands of robbers are marauding the countryside, terrorizing the local people, and Paul is incensed, and determined to find the robbers and have them detained. "The Secret of Moon Castle" – The Arnolds are invited to spend some time in the castle with Prince Paul's family. They are all soon puzzled by strange events happening in the castle: odd noises that occur, eyes in portraits that shine mysteriously, lights that shine in tower rooms, despite being locked tight.

So Big - An Edna Ferber Novel by Edna Ferber Pdf

So Big is the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by masterful Algonquin Round Table writer Edna Ferber, inspired by the incredible life of Dutch pioneer Antje Paarlberg. A thoughtful, gripping novel, So Big follows the story of a young schoolteacher, Selina Peake De Jong, as she influences those around her to appreciate the beauty of art and understand its importance. Her influence begins with her pupil, Roelf Pool, who demonstrates great artistic talent. When tragedy strikes Roelf’s life, he runs away to France, and Selina continues with her small farmwife duties. She eventually has a son, Dirk, and when his father dies, she gives up teaching so she can run the farm and provide for her small family. Despite Selina and Dirk’s struggles, she never sacrifices art and encourages her son to share her interests. But as he ages, he begins to put money above artistic values. With the sudden reappearance of Roelf, now a famous sculptor, will Dirk realise there is more to life than financial success? First published in 1924, Edna Ferber’s bestselling novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1925. So Big is an incredible book with a message just as prevalent today as it was 100 years ago. Republished with an introduction from Rogers Dickinson, this volume is a must-read for lovers of Edna Ferber and fans of Jazz Age literature.

An Italian Education by Tim Parks Pdf

A “marvelous” Mediterranean memoir of an expatriate father raising his children in Italy—from the author of Italian Neighbors (The Washington Post). Tim Parks offers another lively firsthand account of Italian society and culture—this time focusing on all the little things that turn an ordinary newborn infant into a true Italian. When British-born Tim Parks heard a mother at the beach in Pescara shout to her son, “Alberto, don’t sweat! No you can’t go in the sea till eleven, it’s still too cold, go and see your cousin in row three number fifty-two,” he was inspired to write about parenting in Italy—which he was doing himself at the time after adopting the country as his own. In this humorous memoir, Parks offers an enchanting portrait of Italian childhood that shifts from comedy to despair in the time it takes to sing a lullaby. The result is “a wry, thoughtful, and often hilarious book . . . a parable of how our children, no matter what, are other than ourselves” (The New Yorker). “Glimpses of Italy that are fond, critical, pithy and penetrating.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
