Schaefferstown and Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County by Diane Wenger and Jan Taylor Pdf

Rural and charming, Schafferstown and surrounding Heidelberg Township in Lebanon County have preserved many of their earliest historic qualities. German immigrant Alexander Schaeffer laid out the village with a central square and built a water system around 1758 using underground wooden pipes to connect a spring-fed reservoir to two troughs on Market Street and the town square. It is one of the oldest public waterworks in the United States. Because the area was left isolated from rail lines, canals, and modern highways, the town did not grow appreciably in the 19th or 20th centuries. This greatly influenced the small-town look and feel that the area maintains today. Schafferstown retains many early log, stone, and even a few half-timbered houses as well as the original town layout. Today, it is the largest village in Heidelberg Township, which also includes Kleinfeltersville, Reistville, and Buffalo Springs.

Myerstown and Eastern Lebanon County by Donald R. Brown Pdf

Myerstown and the other Eastern Lebanon County towns are located in one of America's most fertile valleys. Rich limestone bedrock underlies much of the Lebanon Valley, which is anchored by Reading to the east and Harrisburg to the west. Myerstown, a borough since 1912, was laid out 144 years earlier by Isaac Meier on his plantation along the Tulpehocken Creek. Jackson Township surrounds Myerstown and is growing rapidly with small businesses, retirement communities, and Amish- and Mennonite-owned farms. Richland, a borough since 1906, was founded in the 1850s when a railroad was built through the valley. Heidelberg Township, the oldest of the municipalities, contains the 18th-century farm and village of Historic Schaefferstown. Millcreek Township includes the communities of Newmanstown and Millbach, where a quaint Pennsylvania German village is located.

Pennsylvania Germans by Simon J. Bronner,Joshua R. Brown Pdf

This comprehensive encyclopedia—the first of its kind—maps out three hundred years of German history and culture in Pennsylvania and beyond. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL Destined to become the standard reference on Pennsylvania Germans (also known as the “Pennsylvania Dutch”), this book is the first survey of this extensive American group in nearly seventy-five years. Nineteen broad interpretive essays written by a distinguished group of historians, anthropologists, sociologists, linguists, and folklorists tell the rich and nuanced story of Pennsylvania German history and culture. United by a distinct (and distinctly American) language, the Pennsylvania Germans have been slower to assimilate than other ethnic groups. This sweeping volume reveals, though, that the group is much less homogenous and isolated than was previously thought. From architecture, media, and farming techniques to food, folklore, and medicine, the Pennsylvania Germans and their descendants display a wide range of cultural variation. In Pennsylvania Germans, editors Simon J. Bronner and Joshua R. Brown broaden the geographical and social coverage of the group, touching both on Pennsylvanian communities and the Pennsylvania German diaspora, including settlements in Canada and Mexico. They also expand historical coverage of the Pennsylvania Germans to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Beautifully illustrated, this volume—while paying tribute to the historical and cultural legacy of the Pennsylvania Germans—is the most comprehensive book on the subject to date. Contributors: R. Troy Boyer, Simon J. Bronner, Joshua R. Brown, Edsel Burdge Jr., William W. Donner, John B. Frantz, Mark Häberlein, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, Donald B. Kraybill, David W.
