The Politics of Pure Science by Daniel S. Greenberg Pdf
The Politics of Pure Science, a pioneering and controversial work, set a new standard for the realistic examination of the place of science in American politics and society. Dispelling the myth of scientific purity and detachment, Daniel S. Greenberg documents in revealing detail the political processes that underpinned government funding of science from the 1940s to the 1970s. While the book's hard-hitting approach earned praise from a broad audience, it drew harsh fire from many scientists, who did not relish their turn under the microscope. The fact that this dispute is so reminiscent of today's acrimonious "Science Wars" demonstrates that although science has changed a great deal since The Politics of Pure Science first appeared, the politics of science has not—which is why this book retains its importance. For this new edition, John Maddox (Nature editor emeritus) and Steven Shapin have provided introductory essays that situate the book in broad social and historical context, and Greenberg has written a new afterword taking account of recent developments in the politics of science. "[A] book of consequence about science as one of the more consequential social institutions in the modern world. It is one that could be understood and should be read by the President, legislators, scientists and the rest of us ordinary folk. . . . Informative and perceptive."—Robert K. Merton, New York Times Book Review

Government response to the report from the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee by Great Britain: Department of Health Pdf
This document sets out the Government's reply to the Committee's report (HCP 272-I, session 2006-07; ISBN 9780215033512) on the Government's policy proposals for changes to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 in order to update the law and regulation relating to human reproductive technologies (Cm. 6989, ISBN 9780101698924). The Committee's report argued that the creation of human-animal chimera or hybrid embryos, and specifically cytoplasmic hybrid embryos, are necessary for research purposes, under licence, and criticised the Government for not clearly setting out the areas of research practice intended to fall under the proposed legislation. The Government's response deals with all 34 of the Committee's conclusions and recommendations and finds that the Committee's report has very helpfully moved the debate on this issue forward.

As requested by Congress and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), this report assists federal agencies in crafting plans and reports that are responsive to the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA), OMB Guidance, and agency missions. Using a case study approach, the report identifies best practices used by individual agencies to evaluate the performance and results of their science and technology programs. The report takes into account individual agencies' missions and how science and technology programs and human resource needs are factored into agency GPRA plans. Specific applications of recommendations are included from COSEPUP's earlier report entitled Evaluating Federal Research Programs: Research and the Government Performance and Results Act.
