International Trade in Wildlife by Tim Inskipp,Sue Wells Pdf

Originally published in 1979 International Trade in Wildlife is a product of the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora conference, containing the full text of the CITIES convention. The volume outlines the animals and plants controlled by CITIES, and describes the protective policies put in place to protect endangered plants and animals. It gives a detailed background to the international traffic in monkey’s, spotted cats, whales, ivory, parrots, tortoises, marine turtles, crocodiles, butterflies, sponges and rare orchids at the time of publication and acts as a comprehensive document on the conservation policies enacted through CITIES, as well as facts surrounding the decline of endangered species. Although published over 40 years ago, the document still offers a comprehensive and useful guide to conservation and will be an important historical document for environmental policy makers and conservationists alike.

East African Cowry Shells by Shaun Metcalfe,Tim O'Hare Pdf

This book, Cowries of East Africa, by Tim O'Hare and Shaun Metcalfe, is intended to be a field guide. The book details over 70 species and subspecies of cowry shells found on the East African coastlines of Kenya and Tanzania and the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. The book also covers common cowry relatives found in the area. Each species of cowry shell is accompanied by comprehensive colour photographs to make identification easy. It has also been possible to include some photographs of live cowry shells. The book, fully researched and up to date, is a work in progress, especially as more photographs of live shells are obtained. Shaun and Tim were brought up on the coast of Kenya where their interest in coral reefs began.

Oceanography and Marine Biology by S. J. Hawkins,A. J. Evans,A.C. Dale,L. B. Firth,D. J. Hughes,I. P. Smith Pdf

Ever-increasing interest in oceanography and marine biology and their relevance to global environmental issues create a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review has catered to this demand since its founding by the late Harold Barnes more than 50 years ago. Its objectives are to consider, annually, the basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes; to deal with subjects of special and topical importance; and to add new subjects as they arise. The favourable reception and complimentary reviews accorded to all the volumes shows that the series is fulfilling a very real need. Volume 55 follows closely the objectives and style of the earlier volumes, continuing to regard the marine sciences—with all their various aspects—as a unity. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields, and every chapter is peer-reviewed by other experts working actively in the specific areas of interest. Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

A Guide to Kenya and Northern Tanzania by David F. Horrobin Pdf

East Mrica is rapidly becoming one of the most popular areas in the world among the increasing numbers of travellers who are prepared to venture outside their own continent. To those of us fortunate enough to live here, the reasons for this popularity are quite apparent. Much of the region enjoys an equable climate all the year round with no extremes of either heat or cold and with plenty of sunshine. Scenically the area is one of the most beautiful on earth with a marvellous variety of landscape. The beaches are vast and clean and unspoilt. But the outstanding attractions of East Africa, for most people, are its fascinating peoples and the unparalleled abundance of its wild life. This guide is the first of three planned to cover the whole region of East Mrica. It deals with Kenya and Northern Tanzania. The other guides will deal with Uganda and the rest of Tanzania. Many books have been written about East Africa. They come into four main categories; the magnificent picture books, the geography books, the stories about animals and the detailed technical books on such special aspects as game conservation, bird life, prehistory, or butterflies. None of these is suitable as a practical guide for either the local resident or the average intelligent visitor, who is interested in everything but is not an enthusiastic specialist in any particular subject.

1. 1 Nautilus and Allonautilus: Two Decades of Progress W. Bruce Saunders Department of Geology Bryn Mawr College Bryn Mawr PA 19010 wsaunder@brynmawr. edu Neil H. Landman Division of Paleontology American Museum of Natural History New York, New York 10024 landman@amnh. org When Nautilus: Biology and Paleobiology of a Living Fossil was published in 1987, it marked a milestone in cross-disciplinary collaboration. More than half of the contributing authors (36/65) were paleontologists, many of whom were collaborating with neontological counterparts. Their interest in studying this reclusive, poorly known animal was being driven by a search for clues to the mode of life and natural history of the once dominant shelled cephalopods, through study of the sole surviving genus. At the same time, Nautilus offered an opportunity for neontologists to look at a fundamentally different, phylogenetically basal member of the extant Cephalopoda. It was a w- win situation, combining paleontological deep-time perspectives, old fashioned expeditionary zeal, traditional biological approaches and new techniques. The results were cross-fertilized investigations in such disparate fields as ecology, functional morphology, taphonomy, genetics, phylogeny, locomotive dynamics, etc. As one reviewer of the xxxvi Introduction xxxvii book noted, Nautilus had gone from being one of the least known to one of the best understood of living cephalopods.

Swahili People and Their Language by Dainess Mashiku Maganda Pdf

History is a testament to what happened to a people or a place. It shows how things were and their transformation while explaining why the changes happened. Not only does history allow human beings to trace their trajectory in dealing with specific issues they face in the affairs of making a living, it also highlights movements between people around the world while showing their role in creating systems still in place today. History reveals to us major contributors of the trading systems along the east coast of Africa, documenting the role of the Swahili people and their interactions with different people of the world. The Swahili People and Their Language discusses ways in which the Swahili people came to occupy a prominent position in the world's trading system and how they lost their wealth through their contact with the outside world. The book highlights the strategic position occupied by the Swahili people, their natural resources, their skills and their rich cultural mix and how the contact with the outside world played a major influence that is clearly noticeable to date. The book contributes to the on-going discussion about Africans and their participation in today's development and reminds readers that the creation of the current economic, social and political situation of the Swahili people mirrors the history and positioning of many other formerly independent societies that became colonized nation-states. The authors provide discussions that shade light on critical questions such as: Who are the Swahili people and why are they important? Is there such a thing as a Swahili Civilization? If so, what is it and how does it relate to modern civilization? What place does the Swahili language occupy both in its history and usage on the continent and in the rest of the world?
